Salt - do you cook with it?

Just curious really as I know many of us are aware that our children shouldn?t have much salt. But what about us?

Do you cook with salt?
Do you salt things like your veggies and pasta?
Do you add salt at the table?

I never think to add salt to boiling water or to my food on the table. I never had done ? my parents didn?t either; well after my sister (now 21yo) was born.

I do occasionally add salt to a big meal I?m making if we have friends/family over ?properly?, but then only a very limited amount.

What does everyone do?

never add it to cooking.
Sometimes to my chips but that's it! Hubby never does

GeorginaA · 06/10/2004 21:53

I only have salt on the table for chips, but never offer it to ds1 (and it's only me that has it on chips). I will tend to add it to the water veg is cooking in and in some recipes, but only when experience tells me it tastes better with (for example, I can never tell the difference between salted or non-salted white sauce so I don't bother anymore).

I certainly use a lot less salt since ds1 was born - more because I got out of the habit of using it.

Couldn't dream of having chips without though

Never. My mum and gran had high blood pressure so avoided salt or used Lo-Salt. So I am used to not adding salt to anything (except chips) but that is all.

PS. I steam most of my veg - so no salt in those.

Amfs · 06/10/2004 21:54

never add salt at the table .. nor do any of the family have it on chips either

but do add a small amount of salt to veg / pasta / stews

Chinchilla · 06/10/2004 21:55

Never cook with it, never eat it...except on chips.

beansmum · 06/10/2004 21:55

i dont add it to my plate but always boil pasta/potatoes with salt and always put it in if i make soup or stew or something like that. it just doesn't taste very nice without it. i use that lo salt stuff, not really sure what the difference is, less sodium i suppose

Aero · 06/10/2004 21:55

Pretty much like you Hula, though my mum did add salt to anything boiled! I do like a little on my food though, so put it on the table. My kids don't have it at all. I stopped cooking with salt years ago when I was a nanny and cooking for the children I was caring for.
It's amazing how I really notice the salt flavour in any ready-meal type food though and don't much like it.

poppyseed · 06/10/2004 21:56

Nope. Don't use it in veg, pasta or add it at the table. The only thing I do add it to is my one pot wonders you know - spag bol, chilli, etc, but even then it's that maldon stuff and only a small pinch.

Chinchilla · 06/10/2004 21:56

Having said that, I eat a lot of low-cal ready meals, and snack-a-jacks, so I guess I must eat a fair amount of salt. I don't ADD it though.

webmum · 06/10/2004 21:56

always use it to cook, in moderate quantities, but never add it on the table

Hulababy · 06/10/2004 21:56

Georgina - I also use a steamer for my veg and potatoes, so don't add salt in there at all anyway.

For flavouring I normally season with herbs or spices instead.

Funny you mention that, Aero. Since we cut out salt in a lot of cooking when ds1 was weaning, I find most packets of crisps way too salty now. Never noticed it before! You obviously do get sensitized to it.

GeorginaA · 06/10/2004 21:57

Oh, I boil pasta with olive oil, not salt too. (Are olives salty?!)

blossomhill · 06/10/2004 21:57

Only when I am roasting potatoes but do try and avoid salt as much as possible.

misdee · 06/10/2004 22:01

only add salt to chips. never add it when cooking. dh puts salt on after as i refuse to add it to cooking.

Aero · 06/10/2004 22:01

When my Granny was in hospital, they brought her dinner to her with no salt offered. When she asked for some, she was informed that 'this is the heart ward Mrs * - we don't have salt here. To which Granny replied, 'Well, you can just take that (meaning dinner) back with you then!' She used to pile on the salt - I'm sure she couldn't see how much was coming out of the salt cellar! She lived to be 82!

Mum2girls · 06/10/2004 22:06

Only to chips....but am a salty snacks addict - crisps, nuts, whatever

Skate · 06/10/2004 22:07

Only add to chips (except when pregnant when I craved it on everything).

Don't put in pasta or veg but I steam all my veg as it tastes so much better than when it's boiled.

Don't really add it to food either.

suedonim · 06/10/2004 22:10

Never cook with it or add it to veggies or pasta. Dh has lo-salt and dollops it on his food.

iota · 06/10/2004 22:13

I still coook with salt eg when making meatballs, chilli etc, but I have cut down on the amount I use. I don't add it to veg cooking water (used to), but I will put it in mashed potato

prufrock · 06/10/2004 22:18

Was typing hat yes I have to cook pasta in salt - then realised that I don't actually anymore. I NEVER thought I would eat unsalted pasta.
It is essential on fried egg sandwiches, tomato an ricesoup (one of my fave easy feeling fat meals) and I can't stomach unsalted butter on my bread. Also use Maldon when roasting baby potatoes in their skins, and will add it to some other veggies - asparagus or roast leeks for example.
DD (2.5) says when we sit down to meals with salt and pepper squeezers on the table - "Mummy have salt. My no have salt, my have pepper. Daddy have ketchup"

JoolsToo · 06/10/2004 22:20

an absolute smidgeon in vegetables - NEVER add to food on the plate - this isn't particularly for health reasons I've never used a lot of salt but now I'm glad to hear that it is more healthy for me!
