Salt - do you cook with it?

Just curious really as I know many of us are aware that our children shouldn?t have much salt. But what about us?

Do you cook with salt?
Do you salt things like your veggies and pasta?
Do you add salt at the table?

I never think to add salt to boiling water or to my food on the table. I never had done ? my parents didn?t either; well after my sister (now 21yo) was born.

I do occasionally add salt to a big meal I?m making if we have friends/family over ?properly?, but then only a very limited amount.

What does everyone do?

We don't have ANY salt in the house - never have done since I've left home.

Wouldn't occur to me to add it to pasta/potatoes/veggies etc.

Only on my rare fish and chip supper but it has to be AFTER the vinegar, I'm very anal about that

GeorginaA · 06/10/2004 22:32

Oh yes, have to have salted butter - non-salted butter tastes wrong ...

BigCookBen · 06/10/2004 22:34

No I don't cook with it. If I really want salt (not often) then I add it to my own food on the plate.

jamiesam · 06/10/2004 22:35

Hmmm
Don't add salt to veggies or most one pot meals like pasta sauces. Unless I'm following a recipe (religiously as a rule).
Just realised that I always buy unsalted butter to cook with for my ds's meals - will use on toast/bread when we've run out of marg. Can't say I notice the absence of salt then (which I sure is in the marg in abundance)
While I'm here - has anyone tried no salt crisps? Only ones I've tried are very thick cut and while they tasted lovely to me, think ds's found a bit off-putting. Or should they be avoiding crisps for different chemical reason anyway?

GeorginaA · 06/10/2004 22:36

I quite often buy the salt n shake crisps and don't bother adding the salt (although I do confess that I have to be in the right mood for them and would generally opt for no crisps more often than not)

Completely at one with you there JuniperDewdrop (inspite of apparent right-on-ness of previous message)

dont have salt in the house

but of a bugger when you spill red wine on a beige carpet though

KateandtheGirls · 07/10/2004 19:47

Surprised at how many of you don't cook with salt, or even have it in the house. I know it's not good for you, but I can't stand food that hasn't been seasoned properly. I salt the pasta water, but only a little. I never cook potatoes or chips, but I would have to use salt if I did. I always add it to soups, stews, pasta sauce etc. I also salt and pepper my salad unless I'm using store-bought dressing. (I don't make dressing, but I just drizzle olive oil and vinegar onthe lettuce.

I steam most vegetables, like broccoli, and don't add salt. But I grill asparagus and will s&p it first.

I do have very low blood pressure, and I try to eat pretty healthy foods - lots of veggies, low fat meats, wholemeal bread and pasta etc.

lou33 · 07/10/2004 19:53

I don't cook with it, but I add it to my own food sometimes.

krocket · 07/10/2004 19:55

salt doesn't cause high blood pressure, that's a fact. It only has any affect if you already have high blood pressure.

popsycal · 07/10/2004 19:57

that is wht we dont have salt in the house krocket.....

btw 0 just to hijack ths thread...how is your matsh doing now???

KateandtheGirls · 07/10/2004 20:09

Really krocket?

Hooray!!

Furball · 07/10/2004 20:11

Don't add salt to rice, pasta or veg. Add lo-salt to Potatoes if roasting or mashing them. But do add salt to bolognese sauce etc.

krocket · 07/10/2004 20:11

KATG - yes, and even that is not proven
