If it is a really fab shop, I would do a British cheeseboard and get:

Stinking Bishop (soft and smelly)
Lincolnshire Poacher (more interesting than Cheddar)
Capricorn (amazing goat's cheese)
Mrs Bell's Blue

Nbg · 06/09/2007 15:30

Brie
A really good cheddar
One with fruit in.

Crackers, grapes, apples.

Lilymaid · 06/09/2007 15:48

A really good cheddar such as Montgomery's (Alternatively a "tasty Lancashire or Mrs Appleby's Cheshire - but it must be proper, on the rind stuff not factory made)
A camembert or brie (preferably lait cru) or similar cheese
Some sort of goat's cheese - get something British and preferably local as recommended by your fab shop
A blue veined cheese such as a Colston Bassett stilton.
Alternatives - a second hard cheese such as Gruyere or some Cantal.
Better to buy largish pieces of fewer cheeses than little bits of many cheeses - a choice of three or four cheeses is the best.

haggisaggis · 06/09/2007 15:50

And make sure you take the cheese out of the fridge an hour or 2 before you want to eat it. Nothing worse than over-chilled cheese!

Carmenere · 06/09/2007 15:52

Montgomery's cheddar,
Mature Cashel Blue,
Brie de Meaux,
Big pieces and get charcoal biscuits and oat biscuits and some walnuts and some fruit.

slim22 · 06/09/2007 16:02

know only french cheese

would do:

2 semi soft and smelly ( epoisse and munster) - best with cereal bread and grapes

2 hard ( a fruity comte and a mild goat milk)
Best with crusty farmer bread and quince jelly/pears

2 soft (blue as Roquefort and Goat milk as crottin de chavignol)
Best with crackers and walnuts

fleacircus · 06/09/2007 16:06

Epoisse
Gorwydd Caerphilly
A good runny looking brie
Comte

Something blue - maybe Colston Bassett stilton.

Oatcakes
Walnuts

A sweeter white wine is unusual but delicious. Sauternes and stilton... mmmm....

Yum. Am pregnant and have only come on this thread to torture myself.

CountessDracula · 06/09/2007 16:12

I would go for

A really good hard cow's cheese eg Doddington, Montgomery's cheddar, a very aged Gouda

A really good hard Sheep's cheese eg Pecorino, Ossau Iraty, Manchego, Brebis

Something smelly and soft eg Chambertin, Epoisses, Vacherin (not currently in season though)

Something not so smelly and soft eg Taleggio, Brie

Something Goaty maybe, there are so many to choose from

Something Blue eg Colton Bassett stilton

(I would prob go for 4 of the above in big lumps rather than lots of little oneS)

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 06/09/2007 16:12

Lots already mentioned (esp. Montgomerys cheddar & Mrs Applebys) but also Cornish Yarg.

I would balance the cheeseboard to include a hard mature (cheddar), a hard mild, a blue, something creamy (brie, camembert) and something different (smoked, goats etc). And possibly something low fat for boring people .

Oatcakes, crackers, grapes. And homegrown figs are in season atm.

Where is this shrine of cheese you're visiting?

CountessDracula · 06/09/2007 16:13

Oh and maybe some quince jelly or one of those lovely Calabria fig balls wrapped in fig leaves

And charcoal or spelt wafers

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 06/09/2007 16:14

That was weird.

CountessDracula · 06/09/2007 16:16

No you should NEVER cater for dieters on a cheeseboard
they should eat proper cheese or fark orf

(seriously though it is the slippery slope you will buy some sliver of tasteless low fat crap and they will eat it, it will whet their appetite and before you know it they will have demolished half the cheese board)

slim22 · 06/09/2007 16:28

very weird!
Agree, sod the dieters.

And yes duchess figs, definitely.

For "different" why not try cumin seed gouda?

ImBarryScott · 06/09/2007 16:32

these biscuits

ImBarryScott · 06/09/2007 16:38

Beenleigh Blue
Kirkham's Lancashire
a Munster (in the absence of Vacherin)
and one of those nice crottin-type goat's cheese.

smugmumofboys · 06/09/2007 16:43

A good Cheshire
some Hartington Blue
Cornish Yarg
Really ripe, runny Brie or some Reblochon

sweetkitty · 06/09/2007 16:48

oh this has taken me back, I've been to quite a few farms that make the cheeses on here so won't spoil it for anyone

Back in my child free days I used to taste cheese daily now I'm lucky if I get some decent cheese at Christmas, none of my family really do cheese, DP doesn't like it and it's hardly worth buying it just for me.

Agree sod the dieters low fat cheese is horrendous.

My favs:

Lincolnshire Poacher
Brie de Meaux
Manchego
Epoisse

something blue like Roquefort and a really good Goats Cheese

thats it I am slobbering over the keyboard now must get some good cheese soon

CountessDracula · 06/09/2007 17:05

I have just had to go and nibble soem cheese!!!

I had Coolea (really lovely irish cheese, goudaish) and some really freaky swiss cheese, can't remember its name but divine

Carmenere · 06/09/2007 17:07

Ohhh @ Coolea, I love it and it is particularly amazing if it is really mature, where did you get it?

claricebeansmum · 06/09/2007 17:07

Some Vacherin Mont D'Or
with some Vacherin
with some Vacherin
with a bit of Vacherin

Carmenere · 06/09/2007 17:09

Vacherin is only made for Christmas

CountessDracula · 06/09/2007 17:14

I got it in the most fab cheese shop/deli/traiter on earth just round the corner from me, Gusto and Relish in White Hart Lane in Barnes

It is run by rather an erascible little man who I get on v well with but everyone else I know hates him

His cheese is beyond belief

Frizbe · 06/09/2007 17:19

St Agur, lovely stuff!

saltire · 06/09/2007 17:22

Mine would have Stilton nad more Stilton. Maybe some camembert thrown in.
Nothing else, too bad if no one else liked Stilton
