Anyone else finding it hard to buy Quorn sausages?

Neolara · 28/02/2020 12:02

They appear to have disappeared from all my local supermarkets. Wondering if Quorn have stopped making them.

They were a staple of my weekly shop and I haven't found anything I like as much. There seem to be lots of vegan sausages which either have virtually no protein in them or taste grim.

Can anyone recommend a high protein veggie sausage that actually tastes nice.

Incidentally, have any other veggies noticed that veggie options in restaurants seem to be being replaced by (not as nice) vegan options? It's always been slightly depressing eating out as a veggie, but it seems to be getting worse and worse. I'm all for veganism if it floats your boat, but would have appreciated the trend not been so enthusiastically adopted at the expense of veggies. Or maybe that's just something that's happening local to me.

And yes - they are catering for the vegan options by taking away vegetarian options (never the meat options eh?). Some of the vegan things I have had have been horrible- the fake cheese, mayo, cream is horrible.

I’d guess that a fair number of those choosing the vegan options (esp in January) aren’t full time vegans and could eat other things on the menu if they had to.

BikeRunSki · 29/02/2020 07:52

I much prefer Cauldron sausages! I am sad that I can find the Quorn “chicken” and leek pies though.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/02/2020 08:07

I tried Tofoo tofu sausages recently. They were a) expensive and b) disgusting. Stay well away!

BadCatDirtyCat · 29/02/2020 08:21

They still have the frozen Quorn sausages here, not sure about the refrigerated ones.

And yy to the one veggie option morphing into one vegan option (often with vegan cheese etc which I'm really not keen on). Also the proliferation of "fake meat" (I'm a lifelong veggie and see no need for my protein to taste like an actual dead animal).

I like a lot of vegan food and would happily go to a vegan restaurant where there are lots of interesting options but the current food trends are really not to my taste.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 08:22

The hotdogs that they sell in Waitrose - slate they the Tofoo ones? - are horrible and they are expensive!

I tried the Tival ones last night and think I left them in the water too long . They became huge and very sponge like. They smelled very garlicky and didn’t taste brilliant. I threw out the leftovers and I couldn’t stand the small.

I wants me hotdogs!

The Linda McCartney pies are ok. The sausages are too greasy though.

Bloody Quorn. I blame Veganary too. They used to leave us veggies alone... they never wanted our food. They used to take the piss... 😭

Nemesia · 29/02/2020 08:28

Tesco have started selling Fry's hotdogs in the freezer section. They only take a minute in the microwave and are very nice. If you like a stronger flavoured hotdog then Sainsbury's do the Fry's smoked hotdogs in the chiller cabinet.

Nemesia · 29/02/2020 08:30

Remus I totally agree with the Tofoo sausages, mine just crumbled as I opened the pack. I battled on and cooked them but they were just 🤮. Shame because their smoked tofu is really nice!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/02/2020 08:39

The smoked tofu is gorgeous.

I'll look out for Fry's stuff.

Geoffreythecat · 29/02/2020 08:39

Also the proliferation of "fake meat"

Yes to this. Went into a small Sainsbury's yesterday for a ready meal and the only two options they had were both fake meat.

SkaLaLand · 29/02/2020 08:42

There were shit loads in Aldi this morning. Sausages, chicken style pieces, mince. I bought 5 packs

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 08:44

There’s a fake meat (which I spotted on the ‘recall window of shame’ in my local Waitrose) that looks like roadkill. It’s not really for veggies and vegans is it? It’s for the ‘oh I eat a plant based meal once a week aren’t I good’ market.

The M&S near me (still don’t shop there but o shortcut through) has a ‘plant based’ section and a vegetarian section - the vegetarian section is all just prepared veggies!

Meltedicicle · 29/02/2020 08:48

I’ve just had the vegetarian butcher’s ‘big banger’ for breakfast and that was really nice. It says it’s high protein soy based on the box. My kids don’t like the quorn ones but they stuffed these down. Apart from quorn mince and the cocktail sausages (which I’ve had no probs getting in Asda) I can’t say I’m a massive fan either, the texture is weird to me so don’t normally get them from the shops.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 09:30

What brand is that? Where sell is? I’m missing my Sunday sausage (not a euphemism).

FlyingFlamingo · 29/02/2020 09:33

The Naked sausages are nice, I also like the Richmond ones but they are very fragile until they are cooked and get squashed and fall apart very easily, they also taste very salty. Cheatin’ bacon is the only acceptable bacon substitute I have found.

I have definitely noticed less choice around if hot dog style sausages, and for weeks Tesco were out of stock of a lot of brands of sausages - I hadn’t connected this to veganuary but I guess that makes sense! I can still get quorn crispy fillets and the nuggets locally, I would be disappointed if those disappeared - they go beautifully with Katsu sauce.

I tried a quorn chickpea curry bowl recently - it was horrid Envy

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 09:35

I tried the meatless farm ones - wet texture, welded to the bottom of the nonstick pan, fatty and you needed more oil to stop them sticking, salty and horrible taste. Not very nice. Even DS wouldn’t eat them (and he would happily eat a pack of Quorn sausages - he’s a meatie but won’t touch real meat sausages).

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 09:36

I like the Tival Kosher brand of cutlets and nuggets - their meatballs are lovely - (a little too garlicky) but I don’t want frozen stuff!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/02/2020 09:39

Waitrose sell some called Little Willies (might be by the Vegetarian Butcher) which are nice.

Arthritica · 29/02/2020 09:40

Cauldron for me all the way.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 09:41

Quorn are Cauldron now. And they seemed to have stopped their aranchini which were really nice!

hellsbells99 · 29/02/2020 09:44

Sainsbury’s sell the Cauldron range. I prefer these.

hellsbells99 · 29/02/2020 09:44

I hope quorn aren’t cauldron now? I can’t eat quorum as I’m allergic to it or very intolerant of it. Huge bloating and having to run to the loo for hours after.
But have eaten cauldron for years. I brought richmonds in Sainsbury’s this week as they only had quorn ones as an alternative. They were nice. Hard to pull apart without breaking before cooking but once cooked they tasted really nice. Even fussy dd (13) ate them without complaint and my meat eating ds (18) said they were nice and he’d eat them over meat ones. He will never touch Richmond meat sausages and only usually eats sausages with a high meat content.

As someone who has eaten vegetarian for years I’m hating the vegan take over. I still eat milk and cheese. I don’t eat whole eggs but if there is egg in a product I will eat it. ANd it’s becoming difficult to be just vegetarian.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/02/2020 09:57

Well I emailed Quorn via their their website and the email that came back was from cauldron!

Neolara · 29/02/2020 15:17

Maybe cauldron and Quorn morphing into one also explains why I haven't seen any cauldron sausages in the shops for ages either. Am gutted to hear they've discontinued the best of British sausages.

Ok, on the to-be-trialled list are: Richmond, naked and vegetarian butcher.

Tried Linda McCartney burgers at lunch - not nice and I popped some cauldron sausages into the oven to cook and the pan came out swimming in grease!
