What would you want on it?

I wouldn’t expect you to buy something just for me...just all the roast veg with veggie gravy and I’d be happy.

I don't really understand why an omelette is getting such a bad reaction?

I would generally eat an omelette with veg and potatoes so it seems fairly normal! Obviously I wouldn't put gravy on it.

NeedAnExpert · 19/01/2020 12:28

I don’t think that’s obvious.

Thanks all. They're the type to tell me not to go to any special effort and not tell me what they'd prefer out of politeness, whereas I'm all about the special effort when I'm hosting 🤷🏻‍♀️ i normally do bean burgers or veggie sausages and mash.

I'm making plenty of veg and potatoe, a massive cauli cheese, loads of veggie friendly stuffing, loads of yorkshires, and I've got veggie sausages, some veggie pulled pork stuff and a nut roast. We're a put it all in the middle family so they can take what they want. My husband very interested in cutting down on meat and eating more veggie so he'll be wanting to try it all too hence buying more than enough for 2 😅 plus I'm just a fussy people pleaser really.

@Strawberrypancakes - something with protein? Omelette, quiche, cheesy pie, halloumi would all be good for me.

Would you really generally think of a large vegetable as a main dish?

SwedishK · 19/01/2020 12:42

I would normally have a cheese and onion pie or a whole roasted cauliflower (I don't eat the whole thing by myself).

Well that sounds like a good compromise although potentially a lot of waste?

I eat everything but the meat and just have extra cauliflower cheese and paxo stuffing no sausage meat

Nut roast isn't that tasty, and I dont really like pastry, so wellingtonsand pies wouldn't appeal to me either. Veggie sossidge or big mushrooms please!

SegregateMumBev · 19/01/2020 12:45

Oh yes, cauliflower steak is great!

@Unicorn on the face of it yes, probably waste however if you knew my husband, you'd know that wasn't the case 😅. To be fair, all six of us are big eaters.

Sounds like a recipe problem, there are so many different ways to make nut roast?

Report
madcatladyforever · 19/01/2020 13:05

I'd like a nice big piece of stuffing in place of meat, the vegetables and some vegetarian gravy and that is fine for me.
I don't need a separate nut roast which tastes exactly the same as stuffing anyway.
My local pubs veggie roast is exactly that and it's very nice.

Lost that dinner sounds amazing! As a veggie I'd be v happy with all of that!

Protein-wise, there’s a massive difference.

But we really don't need big chunks of protein at every meal.

shinynewapple2020 · 19/01/2020 14:28

I would be happy with nut roast, but cutlet, Quinn roast or veggie sausages alongside the vegetables, roast potatoes, gravy. Any pie/ wellington with something savoury would be OK too.

I wouldn't want any Wellington with cheese filling, moussaka, lasagne as I don't think the flavours go together.

We used to visit a pub which did but roast and it was great to have a proper Sunday dinner. They've now replaced this with a butternut squash and feta wellington. Not the same thing at all.

I'm quite happy though if I go out to a carvery yo just have the vegetables and accompaniments with gravy.

For info bisto gravy granules in the red tub is veggie / vegan.

I find it quite hard to get a decent amount of protein (50-70g) over the course of a day, especially as I only eat twice.

Why not serve everyone a vegetable with vegetables on the side then?

I would consider a roast dinner to be my meal for the day - I usually just eat lunch, so yes I would want protein.

Roast dinner without the meat or with a vegetable-based item replacing the meat is a plate of veg.

The non-meat needs to be something dense and protein-rich but not having too strong a flavour. Cheesy things don't really go with roast dinner. Nut cutlet, quorn or something is ok. Cauliflower steak or mushroom probably not unless with something proteiny on it.

I'd honestly feel like crying if I just got veg and no protein 😭 though I'd say nothing if I was a guest. Nut roast would be brilliant, veg sausages or burgers from the freezer section fine too. But absolutely you do need some sort of substitute. Mushrooms, butternut squash, other veg - no thank you!

Veg, veg with a side of veg Grin some of you are so (too?) Healthyto just want the side vegs or a butternut cutlet with more veg.

Craftycorvid · 19/01/2020 17:54

Gosh, I’d be a very happy bunny if you put a plate of veg’ like that in front of me, OP. Can I come round to yours for dinner? Grin Seriously, a meatless Sunday roast is lovely, and at the risk of a double entendre, I do like a good stuffing!

Eating out, it's always one of:
pastry with veg or mushrooms
goat's cheese (GC)
caramelised onion and GC tart
Butternut squash something (usually sloppy rice risotto)
Mushroom something

Every sodding time I eat out, or it will be a meat and 2 veg type meal with a veg replacing the meat.

If it was at someone's house and they'd cooked lovely veg for me I'd be delighted, but eating out should be a treat not a disappointing plate of veg+veg.
