Terramum....it's owned by Ferrero which is still an Italian family owned comapmny to the best of my knowledge.

On their US website they are fairly emphatic that it is made with peanut oil!

the website says......
"The peanut oil that Nutella contains goes through a hot-solvent extraction process
which takes out all the proteins, so you are left with pure peanut oil which is generally
non-allergenic. Only oil prepared by the hot solvent extraction process that is
commonly used in the United States is known to be free of protein. But, of course,
please consult your doctor about any health concerns you may have."

The question that raises for me though is does this mean the oil is hydrogenated? ANy scientists who love Nutella out there?

oops....sorry ...don't know what happened there!

expatinscotland · 31/08/2007 12:14

Who cares? It's delicious! I made DD1 Nutella toasties for a snack. She gobbles them up.

Mumpbump · 31/08/2007 12:20

Depends what you're comparing it to! Probably healthier than jam as it must contain protein as well as fat and sugar, but not as healthy as marmite, perhaps...

MrsBadger · 31/08/2007 12:27

ah but it's less salty than marmite...

liger · 31/08/2007 13:00

you might find it interesting that Nutella is nutritionally comparable to the stuff used for theraputic feeding to severely malnourished children in refugee camps and food emergency situations around the world. It has the same proportions of fat, protein and carbohydrate.

Goooood stuff - and it reminds me of visits to my grandma

EllieG · 31/08/2007 13:01

I looooove nutella and all chocolate spread products. Cannot buy it or would snarfle straight from the jar.

terramum · 31/08/2007 13:02

My bad....thanks for clearing that up hecciesmum!

TigerFeet · 31/08/2007 13:26

It won't be hydrogenated oil hecciesmum, hydrogenated oils have gone through a different process which makes them solid at room temperature. It would have to be declared as hydrogenated oil on the packaging to meet UK food labelling law.

This process is refinement which happens to most oils used in the food industry these days.

God, i luuuuuurve nutella ,slurp>

hecciesmum · 31/08/2007 14:09

Horraaayyyy....so it has no real nasties in it and apart from being unbelievably fattening we can all scoff it to our hearts content!!

[whispers]...It's rather yummy warmed in the micro and then poured over vanilla ice cream....

MaryAnnSingleton · 31/08/2007 16:42

can I say that I haven't opened my jar yet - hows that for strong will ??

Is gooooooooooddd esp on a hot croissant, mixed in creamy porridge, on its own, on soft white bread, in ice cream... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

moonshine · 31/08/2007 17:44

I got a little Good Food book of cakes with the mag many moons ago and it had a recipe for a Nutella cake - has anyone ever made it? Or tried putting a blob in homemade muffins? (Though don't know why I'm bothering to ask because in this house, when opened, it usually gets shovelled straight into my mouth).

moonshine · 01/09/2007 08:56

Oh I shall try it then. But only have less than half a jar left so had better eat that today and buy a new one (that makes sense in my tortured head, slurp)

MaryAnnSingleton · 01/09/2007 11:43

am very disappointed that ds didn't like the toasted roll and nutella I made him for breakfast- I suppose I'll just have to finish the jar. By the way - do you keep it in the cupboard or the fridge ?

OP posts:
Tinker · 01/09/2007 12:01

Not in the fridge - it goes all hard and stiff (oo er) and never quite recovers.

MaryAnnSingleton · 01/09/2007 12:04

oh no ! I did put it in the fridge after opening it yesterday and this morning it was all stiff (fnarr) - will that mean it wont go back to lovely softness then ?

Tinker · 01/09/2007 12:05

Still edible. Or just buy more?
