seriously, am gobsmacked. although credit must go to the person on here who said to rinse, rinse, rinse the quinoa beforehand as i think that helped a lot.
anyway, we had it with veggie goulash tonight, it was sensationally nice, all nubbly and nutty.

Well Ocado have it - one sort in a box or a small bag of ORGANIC quinoa (as now seen in my shopping trolley). So it had better be worth it or I'm starting a thread called...

Aitch, Aitch, Aitch, I really HATE quinoa, it is Fouler than Congealed Pasta

Aitch · 07/08/2007 23:42

and i did put it in a stew the other day too, Meg, that's what made me want to try it nekkid.
many thanks.

throw some into a stew first, Norks. baby steps...

MegBusset · 07/08/2007 23:43

That's alright! It's about the one thing I can cook (aside from a mean Quorn chilli). DH does everything else

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/08/2007 23:43

Right you are

Aitch · 08/08/2007 13:45

bumping for Franny.

Aitch can I ask how much harissa you put in your couscous...I always put too much in!!! (I make it for 2 people btw)

Aitch · 08/08/2007 14:12

well i only like that fancy-pants rose harissa which isn't so strong i think. i put a teaspoon or so in but i often cut it with a bit of oil first when i fork in the harissa to the couscous.

OP posts:
normabutty · 08/08/2007 14:15

Oh thanks, I'll try mixing it with some oil then. Where do you get your harissa from? Mine came from Tunisia when I was on holiday, not very convenient

Aitch · 08/08/2007 14:18

lol, mine came from the greek island of Sainsbos. lasts for ages

normabutty · 08/08/2007 14:20

lol @ greek island of Sainsbos...will have a look for it next time I'm shopping!

Lullabyloo · 08/08/2007 15:21

if you simmer it in vegetable bouillon it's delicious....ds & I like it for breakfast with toasted sesame seeds........or with roasted veg, rocket & pine nuts for lunch....it's delicious

Habbibu · 08/08/2007 17:21

The reason people think it's the devil's food is because it's promoted by the devil (or at least one of his handmaidens). Ok, ok - never tried it but (a) the principle, people! Do you really want Ms McKeith to think she's won? and (b) Aitch - rinse rinse rinse? What happened to the queen of lazy? I feel so let down... Have to go. My daughter is so hungry she's trying to eat a whole lime. Or is that just good ol' BLW?

Aitch · 08/08/2007 17:24

it's BLW, you fool.

Have tried it in M&S ready salad: was slightly sour and therefore did not appeal.

Is that characteristic, would you say? Or does Rinsing Expel Sourness?

booge · 08/08/2007 17:34

Right I'm convinced and off to cook the random packet that has been lurking at the back of my cupboard for 6 months.

Aitch · 08/08/2007 17:36

the sourness is vile, isn't it? that's what put me off the first time. rather surprised that Dervla Kerwan (who i like to think makes all the food at M&S) didn't know to rinse...

apparently there are also different grades of quinoa and some are nicer than others so i'm sticking to my brand from now on.

OP posts:
Gizmo · 08/08/2007 17:39

Yes, it was only slightly sour but aggravated by cumin and lemon, so it overwhelmed the sweet potato. I was rather disappointed: quinoa looks so sweet all curled up and embryonic, then it goes and does the dirty on my tongue.

However, if you reckon rinsing will crack it, I might try and smuggle it past DH's anti-pulse force field.

Aitch · 08/08/2007 17:43

apparently, and this i think is spooky, it is part of the spinach family. or so it said on the side of the box.

OP posts:
Gizmo · 08/08/2007 17:45

Oh it will just be trapped by the 'leafy green vegetable' filter then

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/08/2007 20:37

Franny, Aitch, and associated quinoa pushers - IT IS FANTASTIC! I rinsed and rinsed and then cooked it in chicken stock and simmered until ready. Then stirred in some roasted onion, red & yellow peppers, courgette and good grind of black pepper and a wee sprinkle of chilli powder. It was really, really nice!

The DCs all ate it too. DD1 looked suspicious but she's on a big Cleopatra kick at the moment so I told her it's what the Ancient Egyptians used to eat. She had seconds!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/08/2007 20:43

Bollocks! It's from South America. I though it would at least be from Asia.

FrannyandZooey · 10/08/2007 20:47

Ooh, a thread with my name on. Three days old. Which I haven't been on. I haven't been on this one, have I?

CatIsSleepy · 10/08/2007 20:51

wow having read this am almost tempted to try the stuff now...

Aitch · 10/08/2007 22:45

finally, franny, you've found us. i was considering sending you a link...

Norks, it is really nice, isn't it? we had some with a beef and beer casserole today (not an obvious choice, granted, but our freezer defrosted rather abruptly and i had meat to cook) and again it was delicious. really soaked up the gravy and was all nubbly and moreish.

go on, catissleepy, give it a shot. but rinse the bloody stuff first.
