Cheapest Sandwich fillings.

Hi-

In your opinion, what sandwich fillings work out the cheapest?

I know sliced meats are supposed to be expensive, so have been trying tuna, sweet corn and mayo, but tuna is very expensive!

Egg is not an option!

Inspiration is greatly appreciated!

Cheese? Or a soft spread cheese? Like philly? That must be cheap per sandwich? Or what about hummus?

LoisLittsLover · 19/08/2019 13:18

Spreads like dairylea, Philadelphia (supermarket own) , jam etc. Not always best nutrionally though.

Bulk meat out with salad eg cucumber

Meat that isn't pre sliced eg whole chicken/gammon

Knickersononeshead · 19/08/2019 13:22

Those little jars of pastes, the supermarket own. Full of crap but surprisingly nice. Chicken spread is a winner here.

Big block of cheapest cheese can last us about two weeks with three Dc having sandwiches every day but DH work snap.

Shops own cream cheese.

You can pick up a pack of ham/chicken for around £1/£1.50 and then bulk out with salad bits.

Left over meats from a roast.

Hummous and grated carrot.
Cucumber.
Jam.
Grilling the bread with a sprinkle of grated Cheese on is nice and you can add tomato, pesto or pickle to make a sandwich. grate and melt the cheese to make it go further than sliced.

Peanut butter

GBroGal · 19/08/2019 13:24

Chickpeas - I drain a can, then roughly mash them with chopped celery and spring onions and a little mayo to bind. Add lettuce, tomato, etc as you like.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 19/08/2019 13:24

Processed cheese slices

AtleastitsnotMonday · 19/08/2019 13:35

Try combining thing with veg to stretch them further so grated cheese (a stronger cheese will have more flavour so you will use less) with a homemade coleslaw (grated apple is fab for bulking out coleslaw), tomato or beetroot. Shred any leftover chicken with a bit of and combine with a mix of peppers and finely sliced red onions.
Also veggie pates (mushroom or spicy bean are tasty and cheap to make.)
Yes
You can by a big piece of gammon for about £4 and will yield loads of sandwich meat (just slice and freeze in small batches).
If you batch cooked falafel they are cheap and can be served in pita.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 19/08/2019 13:47

I’m assuming as you say sandwiches it’s to be eaten on the go? If not things on toast are often cheaper.

kateandme · 19/08/2019 14:39

you can get cheap meat in the value ranges(yes i know roll your eyes at me) but its what packed lunch is about no?sometimes it can be ok for very cheap days.fill it with salad.
what about buying a whole chicken?could you do that.super cheap an then you just take off what you want for days or just shred it all of in one go and keep in tupperware.
baked bean toasties.
and if you have things going sot like veggies.roast or satuee them and they make great sandwhich fillings.
things like pesto when bought cost but last froevr if you use a little dollop for extra flavour.
make sure if you are having thigns like chicken for tea.would it work out cheaper to buy bigger family pack then have in your sandwhiches.
one of the cosiest snadwhches ever is leftover bolognase in toast.especailly if you can walm it in microwave.

GotAnyGrapes17 · 19/08/2019 17:32

Thanks all.
Some great ideas, I think I'll start with cooked chicken see how that works out.

Unfortunately they are for packed lunches so no "on toast" etc.

You could get hundreds of sandwiches out of a jar of Marmite.

Cheese, if you slice it thin.

Blondie1984 · 20/08/2019 01:02

Tinned fish like sardines and mackerel with mayo or ketchup/tomato purée and some sort of veg (grated carrot, cabbage, cucumber etc)

Frannibananni · 20/08/2019 10:25

Shredded cooked chicken breast made into a salad with celery mayo etc with lettuce and cucumber, a little goes a long way.

cdtaylornats · 20/08/2019 12:00

Tinned tuna & mayo

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/08/2019 16:01

Peanut butter and cucumber sandwiches are fantastic!!

AwdBovril · 20/08/2019 16:08

Tuna goes reallly well with hummus & grated carrot (all mixed together). If you like spices I personally think it's even further improved by a small pinch of whole cumin seeds.

Smoked mackerel pâté. Boneless smoked mackerel, plain cheese spread (Philadelphia or similar), small amount of lemon juice, small grind of black pepper. Mashed together or stick in a blender. Keeps for a couple of days.

Peanut butter & banana

Ham, cheese sliced razor thin, pickle & salad.

joystir59 · 20/08/2019 16:11

Slice block cheese thinly with a cheese slicer, makes it go much further, you get a healthy sized portion, it tastes better. Add some lettuce. Yum

Bluesheep8 · 26/08/2019 08:48

gbrogal that is genius!

Heismyopendoor · 26/08/2019 17:54

Homemade hummus is ridiculously cheap. One tin of chickpeas, 1-2 tbsp each of olive oil, lemon juice and peanut butter to cheap it cheap or tahini if you’re feeling flush. Season to taste. Serve with romaine and sliced cucumber.

Chickpea ‘tuna’ mayo is also cheap. Recipe is further up.

Homemade cheese and onion sandwich filler. Grated cheese, grated carrot, onion of your choice and some mayo.

Falafel. Homemade or frozen are good value for money. Shoved in a wrap or pita is my preferred choice.

chachaboom · 26/08/2019 19:06

If you don't have a cheese slicer use a veg peeler. Makes lovely thin slices and a block of cheese lasts longer.

Beetroot (and salt) sandwiches are lush if you know anyone who grows their own, but good old jam is prob the cheapest filling.

Redpriestandmozart · 26/08/2019 20:15

A 400g can of chickpeas, drained and mashed with a dollop of curry paste, finely chopped red onion, and some chopped coriander (I use the frozen sort). I usually add a tablespoon of mayo and it comes together like coronation 'chicken'. This is enough for 4 sandwiches (8 slices of bread).
