Is the Stokke Tripp Trapp worth it?

My DH has just impulsively bought a Tripp Trapp highchair. Lovely piece of furniture BUT we're going to need to buy a tray for it as it doesn't fit under our kitchen table due to a footrest in the way.

We've found a seller on eBay who can provide a seperate tray for £50, but on top of the £109 for the basic chair, and £30 for the insert it's hitting £200!!!

Is the Tripp Trapp really worth it, or should we take it back and get a cheaper one? Has anyone bought a tray and found them worthwhile?

I have ikea one with tray in kitchen think it cost a total of £18, thats because DS1 aged 4 eats breakfast at the kitchen worktop whilst me and DH empty dishwasher etc.

We have babydan chair, like a tripp trapp but no troll fleeced me for £150!!! Mine cost £40 from Mackro - you can find them in GLTC (great little trading company) for about £70 product code G8038.

Fits under table, adjusts with them as they grow. Still use booster seat for 4 year old. All meals apart from breakfast eaten at the table.

Er, well my 3 children survived without one so I'd say 'no - not worth it'.

Buy a nice bag instead. Or a pair of shoes.

Gobbledigook · 08/08/2007 20:23

In fact, highchairs are a complete PITA in general. Once they can sit up, a booster seat that you can put on a normal dining chair and pull up the table is waaaay better imo. Then the child can sit properly round the table like everyone else.

We didn't use a highchair at all for ds2 or ds3. Big bulky dirt collectors.

Thanks for all your replies, we decided to go for the tray attachment in the end. Just about to use it for the first time today, mst admit though, it doesn't look all that for the £££ it costs.

Suppose it 'should last a lifetime though' and at least you can clean the vomit and squashed food out of the corners!

Our TT was our best buy and worth every penny. Very easy to clean. Looks good - important to us as in open plan living. And still in fab condition 5 years down the road. Used it from 5 months. DD is now 5yo and uses it daily, now as a chair. I use it at the computer sometimes too

Hulababy · 17/08/2007 10:22

Never found lack of tray a problem BTW. We chose it as we wanted DD sat at the table with us, eating family meals together. Worked really well.

Our dinign room chairs are not suitable for most booster highchairs - as many of our friends have found when bring their own here.

I got a cheapo version off ebay - but it's better because it's not such a trip hazard with that base that sticks out meaning people hurtle over it. It cost £20 on ebay new, had it 2 years and it's great. The cushions were a very dumb buy though - having to wash them after every meal - gave up after a week.

sunandmoon · 17/08/2007 11:15

Love our Tripp Trapp too... DD (2yrs old) sat on it since she was 6 months old, she knows it is HER chair!!
Important note for the Tripp Trapp, always make sure that the footrest and sit are slide properly so the chair is well balanced!!! They are made in a way that the chair can't tip over...

skc · 20/08/2007 16:43

tray for tripp trapp - £50 seems like a whole lot of money when the chair itself is only £100. but as we have a glass dining table and a small flat, either this or the svan seem like our best options. and tripp trapp looks a lot cooler.

chickenlady - how do you like yours?

thechickenlady · 20/08/2007 17:34

Loving it! So much easier to clean and like you we have a small flat, so it 'blends' in much better than a big bright chair.

Like that it's adjustable too.

I have used mine for 8 years now, and think its been really good. I haven't got a tray for it but it would probably make it more versatile.

globalcat · 20/08/2007 22:30

We love our Tripp Trapp, it looks really nice and it means we can all sit at the table together, would definitely recommend.

Aitch · 20/08/2007 22:36

you are all mad...

Meglet · 22/08/2007 20:45

not worth it for a baby. Me and a friend think they are useless for little ones and are really fed up with them. I have gone out a bought a normal one (chicco polly). we'll bring back the tripp trapp when our DS is older so it's not totally money wasted.

seeker · 22/08/2007 20:50

We have two! DD, who's 11 now uses hers as a desk chair - ds (6) uses his at the table still. Absolutely brilliant - but if it doesn't fit under the table it rather defeats the object!Mind you, I am such a fan I would suggest changing your dining table!

MuffinMclay · 23/08/2007 16:52

I like mine, and it matches the kitchen table, but I find it a real pain in the neck to clean.

katierocket · 10/09/2007 19:46

A question: how do you know if it will fit under your table? I don't think our table is particulaly unusual (from shabbytat) but i wonder if it is slightly lower than average)

katierocket · 10/09/2007 19:53

and also, do you actually need the cushions (DS2 is 8 months) or not

hana · 10/09/2007 20:09

def worth the money

and nope, cushions are a waste of money - just don't use the tt until they are sitting up. if you have to , just fold up a towel until they are past the stage of needing 'propping up'

Flibbertyjibbet · 10/09/2007 20:16

Tripp Trapps get at least 80% new price when sold on ebay, so if you take that into consideration then they are cheap cheap cheap.

katierocket · 10/09/2007 20:17

what about the table height issue? I know you can lower the seat but presumably you can't lower it for baby otherwise they wouldn't have the back support IFYKWIM

hana · 10/09/2007 20:29

well yes you can lower for the baby - there is a bum shelf and a shelf for the feet - you adjust these as necessary -

katierocket · 10/09/2007 20:38

But (and sorry if I am being dim) if you lower the bum bit then wouldn't the back rest not be against their back?
