And I dont include friday and saturday evening...In my case, I never buy ready meals so if at evening I feel to tired and dont feel like cooking, I'll go for the simpliest dish..pasta and cheese or something else..I'll never get a take away.

What about you ?

hate ready meals so don't do them but if am just getting stuff for me will be easy like pitta and houmous - as quick and easy as a ready meal, difference is it doesn't taste shit.

I don't do al that hard core home made bread etc etc and we have a takeaway about once a month but ready meals never grace my fridge. Shop bought pasta sauce sometims though.

chevre · 18/07/2007 09:34

i do i do. [jumps up and down excitedly with hand in the air looking around her.]

PigeonPie · 18/07/2007 09:34

Yep, I cook every day for DS and me. Fortunately DH gets fed at work so I don't have to cook a 'proper' meal in the evenings as well.

We had a real treat on Saturday - DH took us out for lunch. It was lovely and so nice not to have to think about what I was going to have to cook

oliveoil · 18/07/2007 09:35

We have ready meals or takeaways maybe twice a year

all lunch and dinner cooked from scratch

(unless I go to Pret!)

If I can't be arsed cooking, I put a jacket potato in the oven, prep salad and tuna etc, then take it out, serve.

The only ready meals that are ok are Sainsburys curry ones, in a box

Ladymuck · 18/07/2007 09:37

I always wonder what cook "from scratch" really means? Eg would you make your own houmous and pitta?

I always cook but I do use some convenience foods within that. So I would use a jar of pesto sauce and then add bacon, pine nuts and cream say. I rarely make bog standard pesto from scratch - similarly houmous. But I would make a red pepper hounous from scrtach.

massivebigpantsface · 18/07/2007 09:37

always cook everything from scratch - much nicer!

We once got a couple of ready meals as we were both shattered and it took more faffing about for a tiny, shit meal each.

Get a take away about once a month and go out for lunch a couple of times for a treat.

massivebigpantsface · 18/07/2007 09:38

I don't bake bread though

CatIsSleepy · 18/07/2007 09:39

almost always.

there are no decent takeaways near us though! might be different if there was a good curry house that delivered...

We do have pizza sometimes (from supermarket), or fresh pasta. Goan fish curry from Waitrose is the only ready meal we sometimes have, and that's maybe once a month.

quiveutmabonnebaguette · 18/07/2007 09:40

Ladymuck - so I am..I always wondered what he term "made from scratch"meant, this is why I have started the subject..we never have ready meals in my place or maybe once in a while but it comes from M&s and it's a treat ! Take away, I'm not for it but I guess when my children will be bigger..once in while is not going to hurt as a treat !!

I don't make my own pasta from scratch either - I always view pasta as a quick and fast option.

fishie · 18/07/2007 09:46

we are not at home during weekdays, so i only cater breakfast and dinner.
bake bread - yes but have hovis sliced in freezer
pesto, pasta - always bought. eaten by ds 3x week
ready meals - never
takeaways - almost never

portonovo · 18/07/2007 10:16

Yes, virtually everything from scratch. Make our own bread, biscuits, cakes, sometimes yoghurt. Pasta I make rarely, we usually buy. Make all our sauces for casseroles, pasta etc, sometimes make pesto (when we have lots of our own basil), but do buy it too. Make lots of jam, but occasionally buy it. Things like tortillas and pitta bread I'm happy to make occasionally but do buy good-quality ones too. Houmous, again we make sometimes but have been known to buy very rarely.

We never do ready-meals or takeaways, but eat out now and then. I have quite a large repertoire of very quick and easy meals for when I'm very busy or tired or whatever. And we also have 2 huge freezers so it's easy to get out something home-cooked.

jenk1 · 18/07/2007 12:10

make most of tea from scratch although sometimes at the weekend we do have a takeaway.
dinner is usually a home made sandwich or an omlette or something.

MuffinMclay · 18/07/2007 14:44

Yes, but I don't make pasta and rarely make bread. Ready meals once in a blue moon.
No decent takeaways anywhere near me. We used to eat out a couple of times a week, but not since ds came along.

bozza · 18/07/2007 14:56

Don't buy ready meals or jars or cakes. Do buy pesto (OK is jar), hummus, bread and pasta. I keep portions of meals in the freezer for when I am working in the week.

Greensleeves · 18/07/2007 14:56

I do. Every day.

Greensleeves · 18/07/2007 14:57

I make my own bread and homous too

escape · 18/07/2007 15:10

portonovo;
would love to hear your repertoire of quick and easy meals... (gets notepad out and waits)...

harleyd · 18/07/2007 15:32

i am always impressed by people who make their own bread!

expatinscotland · 18/07/2007 15:39

Does cheese toastie count?

I cook from scratch mostly because it's cheaper, but do have the odd frozen chips and tinned beans dinner.

All our bread is made in a bread machine.

portonovo · 18/07/2007 15:41

easy and quick meals - home-made soups, some can be made in 20-30 mins. There are even cold soups like 'cheat's gazpacho' which isn't even cooked, just a blender job; omelette; pasta with various sauces, some sauces can be made while the pasta cooks; lentil dal; 'things' on toast, sometimes served with a big bowl of cherry tomatoes to add variety and boost fruit/veg content; scone pizza or other savoury scones; quick stir fry with noodles; quick tuna stew; loads of salads

Don't be too impressed by anyone making bread, it's dead easy. I make mine by hand and really it's only 10-15 mins work, the rest of the time you let it look after itself and make it fit your routine!

MarsLady · 18/07/2007 15:42

Me and I include Fridays and Saturdays unless we are out.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 18/07/2007 15:51

yes but can anyone make their own cheese?? I v rarely buy ready meals and sometimes make pasta - don't do my own hummous but might give it a try - about to make bean burgers for the dc's. Alsways do my own pasta sauce as shopbought ones are not great and it is so easy to do.... do like a bit of waitrose convenience food on occasion though

btw - since we got an icecream maker we haven't been buying pud much - melon icecream tonight yum

Flibbertyjibbet · 18/07/2007 15:54

I mostly cook from scratch but then we eat plain food, so its not a lot of effort.
I can't eat a ready meal anymore and thats not being snobby, they are too salty and don't have that nice fresh taste. We also have beans on toast sometimes but as I make my own bread I'm going to count that as nearly scratch.

IsabelWatchingItRainInMacondo · 18/07/2007 15:56

We can not even use chicken cubes in this house, I don't think cooking from scratch can get deeper than that.

although we buy dry pasta, so... are we having ready-mades?
