Having a 1970s themed night with friends we all grew up in the 70s so thought this would be fun! I don’t have bags of time for prep so looking for ideas for snacks and nibbles to buy / make easily and relatively cheaply. Thinking along the lines of cheese footballs. Already got some 70s sweets.

My MIL who would have been doing actual 70’s parties made a strange thing for me when she offered to contribute to a bbq a few years ago.
It was square crackers, with a slice of square ham and a squirt of primula cheese from a tube.
It was odd to me, but was surprisingly well received by those of that generation.
I wasn’t doing a 70’s theme btw, she just thought this the height of sophistication and I’m not bashing her we get on very well.

Have we suggested fondue yet? I actually really love it

Mrsjayy · 01/05/2019 22:50

Ooo Ritz crackers ham and primula if they were being uber fancy a small pickled onion would go on top!

LaMarschallin · 01/05/2019 22:55

A lovely curry with raisins and 1/2 tsp curry powder in (don't want to blow their heads off) and some well-boiled rice. Serve with little dishes containing dessicated coconut, chopped bananas, chopped apple, peanuts and random chutney (doesn't have to be mango, Branston will do at a pinch).
Mandarin segments in orange jelly with piped Instant Whip makes a most acceptable pudding.
Bon appetit!

Omg, to this day, that's how my mum makes curry!

tinstar · 01/05/2019 23:03

My mum used to use half a cabbage I think for the hedgehog (certainly something a lot bigger than an orange or grapefruit). It must be wrapped in silver foil before you put the cocktail sticks with cubes of cheese and pineapple on them. If you want to be really adventurous you could include silverskin onions.

Another delicacy regularly served at parties was sardines on toast cut into rectangles. Cold of course - aids the chewiness of the toast.

Did anyone mention melon boats (to be fair normally served as a starter rather than finger food). Slice of - preferably unripe - melon with a slice of orange on a cocktail stick to form a sail. And, of course, a cocktail cherry on top.

My mum used to make a curry like this, with left over meat from the Sunday dinner. She never tasted it herself as she couldn't bear spicy food. 🤷‍♀️

DO NOT have angel delight - I tried it again following a similar thread and it's disgusting now - nowhere near enough sugar in it!

Mini pork pies

Shippams paste sandwiches cut into triangles

Sausages on sticks (you can even get quorn ones now they're lush! I know several omnivores that love em)

Celery with primula squeezed on

Party rings

Sliced Swiss roll

Cheese straws

Bread sticks

Fairy cakes (NOT cupcakes)

Butterfly buns

Jam and lemon curd tarts

Scampi

Yes to vol-au-vents. With a prawn cocktail filling.
Cheese and pineapple or silver skin onions on cocktail sticks.
Primula and crackers

Redshoeblueshoe · 01/05/2019 23:13

OMG I've got a Vienetta in my freezer !

Twixes · 01/05/2019 23:16

I make this all the time! It's delish and so healthy compared to the authentic curries I do which invariably have ghee, cream, ground almonds or coconut milk. I call it Mammy's Chicken Curry

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/05/2019 23:18

Oh I was just going to suggest the fingers of toast with tinned sardines! I think most of the stuff my Mum used to cook for her parties has been mentioned.

Gala pie - the pork pie with a rubbery egg in the middle.

Russian salad - looks like sick.

My mother used to have a Square egg press and serve Square hard boiled eggs!

She used to have a cold meats platter - ham, garlic sausage, slices of smoked sausage (we were continental), luncheon meat.

Black Forest gateau and trifle for dessert.

Everything was garnished with curly parsley.

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/05/2019 23:20

“French sticks” (baguettes) and a cheese plate - cheddar, Danish Blue, a round smoked cheese, and for the very daring, Brie. The cheddar should preferably be orange as it’s a special occasion.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/05/2019 23:20

I’ve got my kids into Vienetta!

Ah yes, sausages on sticks, otherwise known as a “party sausage” in our house growing up. [smirk]

TyneTeas · 01/05/2019 23:23

Vienettas, were they not 80s? Or did they just not make it North for a few years?

LizzieSiddal · 01/05/2019 23:28

If you want to be very sophisticated add your Primula to stalks of celery, then lay them side by side on a plate.

My Dh always does these when we have people round for something to eat. He wafts about offering drinks and celery stalks. It’s just like Abigail’s Party round with us 😂

AdaColeman · 01/05/2019 23:28

The cheese/pineapple/silver skin onion hedgehog was made with half a honeydew melon covered in foil as the base.

Still18atheart · 01/05/2019 23:34

My mum who got married in the 70s so was learning the ropes of how to become perfect housewife material
does prawn cocktail in avocado
Devils on horseback
Small sausage roll
Venetta
Vol au vents some with cold mushroom soup and some with tuna nicer than it sounds

Redshoeblueshoe · 01/05/2019 23:38

Tyne you are right, apparently 1982 !

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/05/2019 23:38

Hard boiled eggs, cut in half. Take out the yolk, mash with some mayonnaise and pipe back into the egg whites. Garnish with a sprinkle of paprika.
