Breakfast in your house

Hello Mumsnet,
Me and my friends were talking the other night and does anyone else feel like it's an absolute mission to get something healthy into their kids and out the door during the week?! At the weekends it's so much easier and breakfast is a treat, but during the week feels like a chore!

Has anyone got any hacks to help for weekday mornings? I just want to make sure I'm setting them up right for the day ahead.

Smoothies are popular in our house! I also make pancakes at the weekends

MumUndone · 03/04/2019 13:08

Weetabix and a banana!

kvine2 · 03/04/2019 14:30

Trouble is with smoothies I always think they're full of sugar... Also don't want them to get bored of the options. Do you give them the same every day?

My dc have pancakes or egg on toast before school. Sunday's we have bacon or sausages and eggs around 11ish as we usually have a huge roast around 4.30 so skip lunch.

DarlingCoffee · 03/04/2019 15:11

No I try to mix them up and make either yellow or purple ones! I also add oats to bulk them up a bit Smile

kvine2 · 03/04/2019 16:33

Mixing it up is a good idea. We're the same and weekend breakfasts are very different - much more about quality time together which feels like a treat. Do you find that?

For dd it’s overnight oats:porridge oats soaked in toffee yogurt overnight. I just add chopped tinned pear halves in the morning.

For ds it’s 2 caramel rice cakes spread with peanut butter and topped with sliced banana

DarlingCoffee · 03/04/2019 19:10

Yes! I love a longer leisurely breakfast at the weekends.

ApolloandDaphne · 03/04/2019 19:15

My DD1 ate a healthy range of breakfast foods but DD2 would only eat coco pops, golden nuggets and chocolate weetos. Yes they are full of sugar but it was all she would eat and better than nothing. I never made it a battle or a chore. She is now 21 and tall, healthy and eating a wider and better range of foods. Just let them eat what they want to eat and don't angst about it too much.

DavetheCat2001 · 03/04/2019 19:16

Mine eat pretty much the same thing everyday.. either a bowl of weetabix and shreddies with milk and a bit of honey, or porridge with mashed banana and honey on top.

My son ( who is a fussy eater) LOVES breakfast and would happily eat about 5 weetabix and a couple of bowls of shreddies if I let him!

Weekends OH will oftern do them pancakes with banana and honey, and DD sometimes asks for boiled eggs and toast.

kvine2 · 03/04/2019 19:47

Thanks all, some great ideas for the weekday! And eggs are always a winner at the weekend. I always save fruit juice for then too. I know there are loads out there that are healthy-ish but they can be quite pricey...can anyone recommend a good one?

Toasted bagels with cream cheese, super speedy in the toaster.
Microwave scrambled eggs on toast
Cheese on toast.
Tinned tomatoes on toast
Beans on toast
All can be on the table in 3 minutes

TeddyIsaHe · 03/04/2019 20:53

Bagels with smoked salmon & cream cheese if I’m feeling flush.

Porridge the rest of the time.

Pancakes/eggs/french toast etc on a Saturday.

Upthepong · 03/04/2019 20:56

One kid always has porridge with raspberries (from the freezer) and a bit of sugar and a small glass of fresh juice. Other kid likes wholemeal toast and pate and a small glass of fruit juice. They are boring but predictable.

Occasionally I might boil them some eggs, or make some banana pancakes if there's time. Always wake them up with a glass of warm milk, so I reckon they have a good start to the day nutritionally. It goes down hill from there Grin

This feels distinctly like someone doing research....

Youcantpolishatuuurd · 03/04/2019 20:59

Which foods or treats have disappeared from the shops over the last 25 years would you reintroduce if you could. And why ?

boxlikeamarchhare · 03/04/2019 21:01

A quick weekday breakfast favourite here is avocado on toast. Others ..

Berries with oats and yoghurt.

Sometimes smoothies made from berries, soya yoghurt and orange juice.

I slice bagels and freeze them then they can be toasted from the freezer.

Proper porridge with a chopped apple and some sweet cinnamon takes three minutes in the microwave.

Boiled egg and soldiers (breakfast of champions, which was something my dad said to me every time I ate it as a child and still does, he is 80!).

user1474894224 · 03/04/2019 21:01

Mine have porridge sometimes with fresh or frozen blueberries.
Wheatabix
Fried egg on toast literally takes 3 minutes (I've started flipping the egg half way through as it substantially reduced cooking time and stops the bottom being rubbery)
Bagels or muffins and soft cheese
At the moment a hot cross buns after Cereal is a favourite.
Eldest son had reheated curry leftover from tea yesterday morning!!

ShabbyAbby · 03/04/2019 22:04

I just hand them a slice of toast or an apple or a hard boiled egg or whatever as we are leaving the house.

I also keep a stash of muesli bars and mini malt loafs and such in the changing bag 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sometimes they have something only vaguely passable, like a cheese string, some leftover cake or a box of raisins. I'm not even going to pretend this worries me, it doesn't.

Today we had a digestive biscuit and a spoonful of peanut butter each Blush I should really get up earlier and spend less time reading my phone and drinking coffee before I wake them

Stravapalava · 04/04/2019 17:19

My DC love Weetabix. Occasionally one will ask for a cheese toastie.

DH and I eat porridge topped with various things, bagels or crumpets with peanut butter, yoghurt & fruit.

BellMcEnd · 04/04/2019 17:29

I try and mix it up a bit as my lot get bored otherwise - here a some of the things I do.....

Fishfinger sandwich
Porridge mixed with cacao powder and desiccated coconut
Porridge and honey
Overnight oats with berries
Cheese on toast
Fried egg sandwich
Pancakes (I use the ready mixed stuff)
Scrambled egg on toast
Greek yoghurt with oats, seeds, raisins and honey
Cheese, crackers and nuts
Hummus on toast (this is all one of mine ate for months, lucky teacher having to deal with his garlic breath every morning)
Veggie sausage sandwich
Veggie ham and cheese toastie

Two of mine regularly come home from school with a lot of their packed lunch uneaten as they’d rather play football Hmm so I do try to give them a filling breakfast.

ForFrithsSake · 08/04/2019 17:04

My 2 have plain yoghurt with either granola or fruit and honey, followed by a piece of toast or a crumpet or something with either peanut butter or Marmite.

At the weekends they add in a third course... Shock

SapatSea · 08/04/2019 17:40

French Toast, apple or pear or banana to munch on. Glass of milk, juice or water
Cheese on toast or a toastie
Plain (homemade) sponge cake, fruit. My DC used to call this a "bad moher breakfast" we lived a long way from a shop, so I'd make cake if we were out of bread sometimes. Not really so bad, compared to sugary cereal or jams on toast.
Boiled egg and soldiers
Wheat flakes, berries and milled linseed , milk (older teen)

arseabouttit · 08/04/2019 19:37

Cereal / toast / boiled eggs/ French toast or pancakes - usually with Nutella and banana or raspberries. Fish oil & a vitamin if I remember, possibly a homemade smoothie with spinach & fruit & coconut & almond milk.

At the weekend or holidays maybe a bacon sarnie or an omlette. I wish they would eat porridge but that goal eludes me still.

I do like to get a bit of egg in there somehow, if possible!:)

Unbelievable18 · 09/04/2019 10:25

Rice pudding (homemade, lowish added sugar), crumpets/toast and peanut butter, scrambled eggs, Oatiflakes/Shreddies.
