Have to take something typically British to school....

...for the school summer festival we all have to bring something from our home country as there are so many different nationalities at our dc's school. I mentioned the famous cucumber sandwiches to ds's teacher but she really didn't look very impressed at all so I don't think I should do that (would be perfect and easy, loaf of bread, couple of cucumbers sliced and then cut crusts off and make triangles - they never have that sort of thing here).
I've got to produce something for dd's class and something for ds's class. Any ideas please? And we're in Berlin by the way.

Maybe I'm being too nice trying to find something they'll like! You're right - cheese and branston sandwiches would be one thing I'd like to do but they'd all be very suspicious of the branston.

it's only germany!! - they'll like to try something new - they might have tried brit food before - plus there are lots of other nationalities at the school - so lots of different foods to try.

I remember feeding my french exchange marmite. She almost threw up!

I think cucumber sandwiches sound fab.

Nightynight · 25/06/2007 21:32

cucumber sandwiches
jam tarts
flapjacks - I saw them recently in Aldi as part of American week, labelled "fruhstucksecke" as far as I remember. Germany is otherwise flapjackless, a sad loss.

treacle tart
yorkshire curd tart
bakewell tarts
madeleines

slowreader · 25/06/2007 22:15

Our German cousins demand:
Ribena
Prawn cocktail crisps
Cadbury's cream eggs
Brown sauce
Trifle

slowreader · 25/06/2007 22:16

PS if you are making Eton mess put the merangue in at the VERY LAST MOMENT it has to still be crisp.

margoandjerry · 26/06/2007 11:09

Nightynight - don't tell the French you said madeleines - they are Frencher than French.

But Creme Brulee is actually English so we win after all

I love telling French people Creme Brulee was invented in England. It makes them furious

Nightynight · 27/06/2007 19:22

lol margo we had this one out a couple of years ago. english madeleines are different from french ones - they have jam, coconut and a cherry on top.

A binge drinker.

margoandjerry · 27/06/2007 19:53

Oh those ones! Nightnight, you are so right. They are 100% Brit! Too naff for the French - dessicated coconut and all that. Remind me of that other staple of cheapo bakeries - ice cream cornet with marshmallow covered with hundreds & thousands in it.

Nightynight · 27/06/2007 19:57

now those are def not available on the continent afaik.
But I was searching wistfully for biscuits with coconut mallow on today - none to be had in Germany. Only kusschen, which are sweeter, softer and not at all the same.

Anna8888 · 27/06/2007 20:22

Flapjacks. Did these for my stepson's end of school and they went down very well. You need Golden Syrup though - might be hard to find in Berlin?
