Have to take something typically British to school....

...for the school summer festival we all have to bring something from our home country as there are so many different nationalities at our dc's school. I mentioned the famous cucumber sandwiches to ds's teacher but she really didn't look very impressed at all so I don't think I should do that (would be perfect and easy, loaf of bread, couple of cucumbers sliced and then cut crusts off and make triangles - they never have that sort of thing here).
I've got to produce something for dd's class and something for ds's class. Any ideas please? And we're in Berlin by the way.

stressteddy · 25/06/2007 20:18

ketchup

NHS number?

tassis · 25/06/2007 20:18

cranachan is scottish but you could pass it off as british - rasps, cream, toasted pin oatmeal and whiskey

then the sibling could take the english equivalent eton mess - strawberries, cream and meringues

Why not just start a queue at the food table, as your contribution> Its v british!

A council tax bill would shock them all wouldn't it They don't know how good they've got it in Berlin. No but it has to be food of course, hence the topic food..!

jam or lemon curd tarts
cucumber sandwiches might curl or go soggy

A lovely victoria sponge cake with buttercream and jam in the middle - foreign parts can't really do nice sponge cake like we can - they tend to get all OTT with alcohol and whipped cream and funny stuff.

Scones, jam, cream.

Crumpets (though I suppose you wouldn't be easily able to buy them)

Banoffee pie (I always thought this was American but apparently its English)

Cornish Pasties

Cheese straws (ooh, yeah, cheese straws)

Bakewell tart

Summer pudding (could make some little ones)

Coronation chicken (properly done it's GORGEOUS)

When I lived abroad I missed proper cake....

admylin · 25/06/2007 20:35

Pasties would be good too thanks, I'm good at pastry and they don't really have pasties over here. I'm getting really hungry for home food now, can't wait to get back to the Uk this summer!

steak & kidney pie

southeastastra · 25/06/2007 20:39

make an eton mess (whatever that is)

maisym · 25/06/2007 20:40

strawberries and cream? - easy to do as well!

admylin · 25/06/2007 20:42

that's OK, all the non-food suggestions certainly are very British! ESpecially the umbrella.
I should maybe ask on the living overseas section too. I love marmite and so do my dc but if you ever try to feed it to a German they fall over as if you have tried to poisen them!

Parkin

Toady · 25/06/2007 20:44

i think an eton mess is whipped cream, meringue and strawberries or berries all sort of mixed up in a mess (yummy)

I always make jelly for things like this. No one likes it - but everyone tries it and talks about it!

Rhubarb · 25/06/2007 20:48
