Gammon as part of a roast dinner?

Hi all, would you serve gammon with roasties and Yorkshire pudding etc etc?

We're having friends for dinner tomorrow and I have a large-ish smoked gammon joint from lidls. So nothing fancy. I normally simmer it with bay leaves and cloves and then serve it with chipsand egg one night, make pea and ham soup and use the rest for sandwiches. Could I roast it instead? And will it give off enough pan juices forgravy?

Thanks!

Gammon with roat potatoes and Yorkshire pudding and gravy? No. Definitely not. That's so so wrong.

Whereas gammon with chips is perfectly acceptable (although I'm not a gammon fan myself so would still be disappointed if friends served it for dinner).

I do Gammon with a roast. Nothing wrong with it!!

You're not going to get enough juices for gravy though I would have thought. But I'm one of those people who use instant gravy anyway.

gruffalocake2 · 08/12/2018 12:35

I would serve it with jacket potatoes and salads for a lunch with friends. Or potato dauphinois/boulangere and green beans?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 08/12/2018 12:38

Gammon you can do with a sort of creamy sauce I think? Yes parsley sauce. That would be lush with roast spuds and green veg. I would have puds with it but I'll eat puds with everything :D

PR gammon green beans etc cauliflower cheese spuds? Maybe a bit carb heavy but could work.

I dont' think gravy will be good as gammon is salty, and gravy is salty.

Go classic do a creamy sauce.

PP suggestion of dauphinoise pots and green beans sounds very mice.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 08/12/2018 12:39

OR that should be not PR

Beamur · 08/12/2018 12:39

I love gammon as a roast. Although I probably wouldn't do Yorkshire puddings with it. Gravy might've be a bit salty so you might need to supplement it with something, or a traditional alternative sauce with gammon would be parsley (I.e white sauce with lots of chopped parsley)

Mynydd · 08/12/2018 12:39

Hmmmm... it is indeed the contentious issue I thought it would be!

Potatoes daphinous however you spell it sounds good. Might try that

I gammon for Boxing Day with mash, green beans, cheesy leeks & red cabbage. I personally wouldn't put gravy with gammon but I've seen it as a meat choice in a carvery.

Mynydd · 08/12/2018 12:43

I wouldn't know how to start with a parsley sauce but I do have a big cauliflower! Gammon cauliflower cheese roast potatoes and veg??

Arggh I'm no good at this! Normally when people come over I make curry/ lasagne/ chili but I wanted to use what food we already have and avoid doing another shop this week!

Gammon won't make gravy (and shouldn't be served with any!) but is perfectly acceptable in my house as a roast dinner. I'd do some roasties or boiled pots with a lovely thick parsley sauce to serve! And veg.

It's one of our favorites in our house!

NothingOnTellyAgain · 08/12/2018 12:45

Yes that would be lush as the cream will offset the salt of the gammon.

I think creaminess is the way forward then stuff like green beans / brocolli / spinach would be nice that sort of thing.

Yummy!

Mynydd · 08/12/2018 12:45

Ooh I also have leeks and red cabbage in the veg box this week. Gammon, cheesey leeks/ cauliflower, red cabbage, roasties, and carrots?

In my house growing up gammon, boiled potatoes, cauliflower cheese and peas was one of two options for a 'roast dinner' (the other was beef, roast potatoes, yorkshires, carrots and parsnips), so I think that's definitely a meal!

CarolinePooter · 08/12/2018 12:47

I often do roast veg - potatoes, parsnips, carrots - plus steamed broccoli or cauliflower, with a big jug of cheese sauce. Always popular!

Mynydd · 08/12/2018 12:47

As above plus purple sprouting broccoli. That's just about my veg box on a plateGrin I think that could work?

Thanks for the help

I always serve my gammon with mash, cabbage and onion sauce. 😋

snozzlemaid · 08/12/2018 12:49

Yes. I do this all the time. Got to have cauliflower cheese with it though.

MyOtherProfile · 08/12/2018 12:50

Gammon cauliflower cheese roast potatoes and veg
Nice! Can I come?

Mynydd · 08/12/2018 12:51

Smile feeling more confident in my gammon options now. And very glad I won't need to spend any more money on food! Forgot they were coming but hopefully all will be well

I love a gammon roast dinner and I’ve seen it plenty of times at carverys.

Your menu sounds nice!

NothingOnTellyAgain · 08/12/2018 12:55

Your idea with the leeks etc sounds bang on!

Have fun!

starryskies78 · 08/12/2018 12:59

We often have a gammon roast dinner. With cranberry sauce to sweeten it out.
I didn't think there was anything wrong that! I love it.

School serves a gammon roast for the kids every couple of weeks too. (Not that I'm recommending you serve school dinner style food!)

RandomWok · 08/12/2018 12:59

We have gammon roast with gravy occasionally. Makes a nice change.

RCohle · 08/12/2018 19:13

Ooh that meal sounds lovely OP. I bloody love cheesy leeks.

Chaosandmadness · 08/12/2018 19:27

Gammon is one of the meats I do for Christmas day. Nigella Lawson recipe cooked in coca cola. It makes a good roast dinner and always goes down well
