Somebody pleeeaaase help me sort out my appalling diet????!

spook · 20/05/2007 19:15

Basically I eat shit.
No excuse but I live on coffee,wine,carbs-the occasional croissant or sandwich.
I do cook lovely healthy suppers for DH and myself about 3 times a week (DS's have a fantastic diet too) but I am just dreadful during the day.
It would never occur to me to eat a piece of fruit but I don't dislike it and I do love vegetables.
I think laziness plays a part during the day. Its much easier to make a coffee and have a cigarette than prepare some food and tbh I have no inspiration.
I'm not overweight-thin infact-but obviously a VERY unhealthy thin.
I'm TTC too so really need to sort myself out.
Someone please kick me up my scrawny arse.
TIA!!

So, um,what stops you making a sandwich, or cooking the boys tea early and then having some for your lunch, (or maybe making extra for the boys and then keeping some to heat up for your lunch the next day? or having some lovely brie and wholemeal bread and a few cut up tomatoes and then some strawberries? Or having a tub of hoummous in the fridge and eat it with cut up carrots and cucumber and a slice of bread, or even some oatcakes if bread-slicing is too much? Or making sure you meet someone for lunch a couple of times aweek at somewhere where they serve nice nutritious food? Buy cartons of Covent Garden soup?

Are you rushed off your feet and too busy too eat, or are you avoiding food?

yogimum · 20/05/2007 19:37

I've always been a healthy eater and I do cook very good dinners in the evening but I'm also very lazy during the day due to running after ds 10 months. However I do start off in the morning with a good breakfast, usually meusli with blueberries and a banana, a glass of juice, (already three fruits). I'm also a bit of a carb junkie, funny that we are both thin. I've just completed a pre and post natal fitness qualification taught by a very well respected obstetrician from Canada, Karen Nordhal. She definitely advocates a healthy diet and exercise for her clients who are trying to conceive. Worth a thought! have you got a juicer?

spook · 20/05/2007 19:40

All sound lush Blu! Thankyou
Am not avoiding food it just doesn't particularly interest me tbh.
Ironically enough I have started making DH a lovely healthy packed lunch too-it just never occurs to me to do one for myself.
Although your post has made me think. I do have a sneaky suspicion that I am quite pleased with myself if I go a day without really eating.
I really need to tackle this head on and start preparing exactly the kind of things you suggest.

spook · 20/05/2007 19:43

Sorry yogimum. POsts crossed.
Funnily enough I have thought about a juicer. I would be getting lots of nutrients withot actually having to "eat" wouldn't I?
But breakfast unfortunately is a no-no. I can't possibly eat till I've been up a few hours and had at least two coffees!

OP posts:
yogimum · 20/05/2007 19:49

Spook, I know what you mean, I need 2 cups of coffee just to get me going, ds is usually up between 5am and 6am. I normally have breakfast between 8 and 9am. Do you do any exercise? When I exercise a lot I definitely want to eat more, get the metabolism going. Trying to conceive is probably the best motivation and you should set this as your long term goal. If you are underweight this could affect fertility.

spook · 20/05/2007 19:53

I swim a bit and walk my dog every day yogimum but I wouldn't say anything that brings me out in a sweat Maybe I "glow" a bit!!!
I probably should do something that works up an apetite (as if TTC doesn't!)
I really do like your idea of a juicer.
lol just forced an apple down both DS's!!! What a hypocrite...

Couple of quick lunch or dinner ideas which are really, really versatile:
Chop up various veg - I typically use onion, red and yellow peppers, chopped big and cherry tomatoes, chopped courgette, crushed garlic. Spray with fry light and roast in a medium oven for about 45 mins.
You could eat this once cooked hot or cold with a salad, or cous cous, or baked potato.
But for a variation you can turn it into ratatouille by adding some tinned chopped tomatoes and a tin of chick peas. Heat through and serve with salad or baked potato.
I usually make extra and then you could blitz the remainder into a really nice pasta sauce. Good for the kids as you can hide the veg in a pasta sauce! Done the ratatouille
for my boys and served it with cous cous and garlic bread - clean plate all round!

Hope I've explained this OK!

yogimum · 20/05/2007 20:02

You could intersperse a little jogging in with walking the dog but swimming is a brilliant cardio exercise. Juicers are fab though I go through spells of using it everyday then it collects dust for a while. I think like everything its just getting into the habit. Not sure why its so easy to slip into bad habits rarther than good habits.

spook · 20/05/2007 20:23

Probably because the bad habits are much more fun yogimum
Mumbojumbo-the roasted veg is a fantastic idea and making the rest into pasta sauce for DS's. Genius!!
I absolutely love chickpeas too so anything that involes them is alright by me! Thankyou!

OP posts:
Mumbojumbo · 20/05/2007 21:19

I get chickpeas from Costco (by the tray!). Make hummous, have them with salad, tomatoes with sea salt and black pepper, couscous, straight out of the tin......

Mumbojumbo · 20/05/2007 21:20

Oops, is that something I should be admitting on a public website

Bouquetsofdynomite · 20/05/2007 21:30

Is it real coffee or instant you drink? I switched to decaf instant this year and don't mention it to visitors, nobody's noticed but I am def feeling better for it. It is a drug and you get withdrawal (starts with the yawning) about an hour after a cup.

Have you thought about a fruit and veg box delivery?

Glass of orange juice in the morning and a Humzinger bar is 2/5 of your fruit and veg needs. As long as the other 3 are fresh (or frozen) you're fine.

PS a juicer will be used once and live in a cupboard .

spook · 20/05/2007 22:14

Oh its real coffee bouquetsofdynomite!! Couldn't entertain a cup of instant and as for decaf. Pah!! I KNOW its a good idea but wouldn't even contemplate the school run without caffeine

Thats my worry about a juicer but got to be worth a try???

I am the same in the mornings - can barely move until I have worked my way most of the way down a cafitiere of coffee.

Make smoothies with the boys, and save half a jug in the fridge for yourself to have when you feel like it.

Make a definite weekly date at a deli and stock up on lots of nice things to nibble at - you sound like a snacking type person to me. So lovely cheeses, artichoke hearts, parma ham etc.

Making a packed lunch for yourself when you make DH's is an excellent idea...sandwiches are v healthy, anyway (imo!) good bread, cream cheese and watercress?

Bung a baked potato in the oven before you take the dog out so that it's ready when you get back, have a little heap of chilled grapes in front of you to nibble as you read the paper, and always keep a can of chick peas in the cupboard - fab salads of chick peas with one other ingredient (more if you can be bothered) and olive oil drizzled on. Try thinly silced red onion, tomatoes, shredded spinach, tuna and spring onion etc. Have half an avocado with a little oil and lemon juice and black pepper and salt.

Make something beautiful but simple: omlette with chopped fresh herbs and grated ementhal and ham. Pretend to be french

Bouquetsofdynomite · 21/05/2007 09:36

Honestly, home juicing is just not that tasty and a bind to wash-up the bits/load the dishwasher. Just do your fruit and veg in a more interesting way, like you would with the kids. I force myself to eat oranges by cutting them and sucking/chewing the insides like on Jossie's Giants!
Banana and honey sandwiches get banana into my DD.
If you can sort out small regular helpings of carbs plus bit of protein and a fruit or veg portion, your energy levels would be more stable and you wouldn't need the coffee or cigarettes so much. You sound like you're in quite an exhausting rollercoaster of energy levels! Force yourself to eat with the kids, just a bit.

If you can afford it, it takes 5 minutes to do a bowl of fresh pasta with some frozen veg tipped in.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 21/05/2007 09:39

Also Goodle 'Glycaemic Index diet.' Foods with a low GI (like hoummous, hurrah) give you slow-release energy. Find a list of these foods and stock up. Eventually you could even work your way up to a bowl of porridge (with jam, mmm) for brekky!

spook · 21/05/2007 09:48

Thankyou Blu and BoD...I have just been to the supermarket and stocked up on hoummous (yum) and veggies to dip, and some lovely apples. I love apples with cheese
I am definately a snacky person Blu. A whole meal during the day sort of daunts me IYKWIM.
And I only had one coffee before school this morning instead of the prerequisite two!
Not quite ready for the move to decaf yet BoD!!
Your post has actually made my mouth water Blu and I'm hours away from my usual first nutrient intake of the day!!!

Homemade hummus is dead easy, although a bit different to the bought stuff:

1 can chick peas, drained (reserve liquid)
2 cloves garlic
Juice of 1 lemon
1/4 c. tahini
Ground Pepper
Process that in a food procesor adding TBSPs of the reserved liquid until you have the consistency you want.
After you have that basic recipe you can add any herbs and spices you like. Or can add roasted red peppers, spinach...etc. It's really up to you and what you like.
I usually add a 1/4 tsp of cayenne and a 1/4 tsp of ground cumin. Also added fresh coriander to the last lot I made and it was amazing!

If you like salmon, M&S have flaked smoked salmon pieces on buy one get one half price (so I did and it's delish thrown on a plate with some green salad, a blob of cottage cheese and load of black pepper!)

kittypants · 21/05/2007 12:17

spook · 21/05/2007 12:58

I can't have crisps in the house or I'd by like you Kitty. In a perfect world I could quite happily live off party food .

Bouquetsofdynomite · 21/05/2007 13:25

Well done Spook!
Soft juicy yellow pears are nice too.

kittypants · 21/05/2007 13:31

spook · 21/05/2007 13:44

Thankyou BoD!!! Am now munching on celery and hoummous.
God I'm good.

OP posts:
Bouquetsofdynomite · 21/05/2007 13:59

Ooh ooh, celery is great with Primula squirted along it toothpaste style! I can't stand it on its own but cheese does something magical to it.
