Of course

Wallace · 19/05/2007 20:52

I say yes, but others might disagree

Snaf · 19/05/2007 20:52

Isn't that the point of cake making?

purpleturtle · 19/05/2007 20:52

Been doing it for 34 years with no ill effects.

fryalot · 19/05/2007 20:53

Technically, there may be salmonella in the raw eggs, and you may ingest some if you lick the bowl. However, you are very unlikely to actually get enough into your system to do any kind of damage, so I would say it's fine.

[unscientific]
I've been doing it for nigh on 30yrs and have not yet got salmonella from it.

Wallace · 19/05/2007 20:54

indeed it is, Snaf. When I was a kid I used to wish my mum would leave more mixture in the bowl for me to scrape. Now I am the mum I can leave as much as I like for me to scrape

purpleturtle · 19/05/2007 20:54

But if you use a Lion egg, they're supposed to be salmonella free, aren't they?

StinkyPete · 19/05/2007 20:55

strictly speaking; of course it's not. BUT, as with all things, we use discretion don't we. I did it now, but didn't when pg. and i don't let ds (4) see as i don't want him to copy just yet.

purpleturtle · 19/05/2007 20:55

Obv I mean a chicken egg stamped with the Lion mark.

Not a lion's egg

expatinscotland · 19/05/2007 20:55

I don't.

We use organic, free range eggs from the farmer's market - I don't think they are Lion eggs, though.

Snaf · 19/05/2007 20:55

In 2003, the FSA did a test on 28,000 eggs sold in the UK and found salmonella in precisely NONE of 'em.

They found some on 9 of the shells, though, so don't add shells to your cake and you'll be fine.

(God, have been waiting to get that into a post for ages. Ithangyew.)

Hilllary · 19/05/2007 20:56

Yes

fryalot · 19/05/2007 20:56

but a lion's egg would be perfectly safe to eat in any form

Wallace · 19/05/2007 20:56

lol at Lion eggs

purpleturtle · 19/05/2007 20:56

No neither do I, expat.

I am far from paranoid about these things. Think the word might be lackadaisical.

bozza · 19/05/2007 20:56

Yes and my DD is always chomping at the bit to join in.

Skyler · 19/05/2007 20:57

I do and did when pregnant too as totally forgot about the raw egg factor

purpleturtle · 19/05/2007 20:57

Think I've misunderstood - you mean you don't lick the bowl, don't you?

Thought you meant you didn't use Lion eggs.

StinkyPete · 19/05/2007 20:57

sorry. i'm not often (ever) controversal, but... saying you've always done it and never been ill is like people who say they've smoked 20 a day all their lives and not died of cancer. just because something's not happened to you before, surely doesn't mean it never will??

MrsBadger · 19/05/2007 21:03

it's a risk / benefit thing though

risk of cancer from smoking fags = high
and cancer is nasty wehn you get it

risk of salmonella from cake bowl = low
and salmonella not a biggie unless especially immunocompromised

StinkyPete · 19/05/2007 21:07

i always cross the road without looking and i've never been run over...

Snaf · 19/05/2007 21:08

Um. Hardly the same level of risk, pete!

MrsBadger · 19/05/2007 21:09

This was specifically why I put 'unscientific' at the begining of my post

make your own call, people.
