Having seen the thread title I was going to say pretty much what you've said! I always make kebabs, meaty or veggie - yours sound perfect. Also, chunks of onion, courgette and pineapple go well with your suggestions.

You could just chop everything up and let people decide what they want.

FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2007 15:03

Thank you Songbird

It's in a park so I want to take it all ready prepared

Will the halloumi cook at the same speed as the veg? I haven't ever done it myself

You need a metal skewer not a wooden one!

But yes, sounds fine.

BabaGanoush · 19/05/2007 15:04

F&Z - halloumi on a BBQ is absolutely delicious. I think the veggie skewers would be perfect

Just remember to give it a brush with some olive oil before you put it on or it will probably stick

If you've got time marinade it oil and herbs it makes an extra special treat

PandaG · 19/05/2007 15:06

soak the wooden skewers, they will be fine.

BabaGanoush · 19/05/2007 15:06

will cook at the same time

halloumi best when it's all golden brown on the outside and melting in the middle

yum

Mercy · 19/05/2007 15:09

I didn't know that PandaG. How long do you soak the skewers for?

Also, I've never had halloumi that melts in middle?

PandaG · 19/05/2007 15:11

I soak for as long as possible - so 20 mins/half an hour maybe.

Mercy · 19/05/2007 15:15

ok, thank you!

BabaGanoush · 19/05/2007 15:23

Mercy that's the only way to eat it

How do you cook it?

Mercy · 19/05/2007 15:28

I cut it into slices and either dry fry or barbecue until it's light brown. I've honestly never had it melt in the middle!

And I always buy the real stuff (reasonable sized Cypriot community near here)

BabaGanoush · 19/05/2007 15:34

Mercy maybe try frying it in a little olive oil

Gives that lovely golden crust and if eaten straight away will be all gooey in the middle

Always eat it hot too, it's ghastly when it's gone cold. Like eating salty rubber

FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2007 15:36

ooooops done it on wooden skewer now and time to go

will they burn?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2007 15:39

heeeeeeeeelp

OP posts:
Mercy · 19/05/2007 15:41

Thanks Baba, will try that. Agree re salty rubber!

Franny, I don't know tbh but I would have thought catching fire is a possibilty! Maybe if all the food is very tightly squashed together it might be ok? Maybe the hosts can advise, assuming they're not barbecue virgins?

Have fun

FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2007 15:41

oh bugger they look so nice

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2007 15:42

drat

may just ditch them and take frozen burgers instead?

poo and bother

OP posts:
BabaGanoush · 19/05/2007 15:42

We always do ours on wooden skewers, should be fine

EvilSmellingBugger · 19/05/2007 15:43

They should be fine, is it the soaking of the sticks you're worried about?

BabaGanoush · 19/05/2007 15:43

no need to poo and bother...go for the veggie kebabs

hosts will be impressed

wurlywurly · 19/05/2007 15:44

put some tinfoil on the end of the skewers should stop them from burning.

FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2007 15:44

yes, the catching fire mildly alarms me

oh well am going NOW thanks for help

reports of massive fires in Essex region should be regarded as exaggerated

probably

We had a bbq on wednesday. Made my own kebabs with chicken, peppers, onions and mushrooms. Didn't soak skewers or brush the kebabs with oil. Turned out fine - we even used a disposable bbq!

FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2007 20:26

Right we couldn't have the BBQ in the park because the cricket was on right next to the BBQ area

but we had a nice time drumming and playing football, then gave ds some of the kebabs cold on the way home which he was delighted with

me and dp cooked and ate ours when we got back and there was no conflagration at all, however we did them under the grill so not really proper scientific study. Sorry to let you all down
