Just that really! Do people still eat sardines? What do you put them on/in? Help me fall in love with sardines.

Leave it in the cupboard until it goes off I believe.

HarrietSchulenberg · 19/05/2018 21:59

Sardines, mashed with a little tomato sauce and grated cheese, make a great toast topping. Heap it on and grill it.

gastropod · 19/05/2018 21:59

Love sardines! Serve them with thick buttered sourdough toast. Salt and lemon juice on top.

wormery · 19/05/2018 22:00

Yesterday I found a tin, had them with loads of tomatoes, vinegar and ciabatta, took me back to my childhood but it was just white bread in those days. Alternatively Give them to the cat. They are very good for you apparently.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 19/05/2018 22:00

Feed it to a dog. My dog used to love them. Just the thought of them makes me feel sick.

20nil · 19/05/2018 22:00

Yes, my dog adores them.

concretesieve · 19/05/2018 22:01

On buttered toast with a sliced tomato or two on top. Nice light lunch or supper. Also an essential component of traditional midnight feasts.

ProudThrilledHappy · 19/05/2018 22:02

Ooh I love sardines, you can warm them up in the microwave or a saucepan. They are lovely with tomatoes and buttered toast.

Ds saw me eating some a few weeks back and was curious, so he tried some and is now a big fan as well

washewihersen · 19/05/2018 22:04

If they're in oil, drain the oil in to a small frying pan, add crushed garlic and chilli flakes and fry for a couple of mins. Add half a tin of tomatoes, the sardines and a spoon of capers. Salt and pepper. Warm through breaking up the sardines a bit. Mix into cooked spaghetti.

Simples... this! smellslikefoodinhere.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/spaghetti-with-chilli-sardines-and.html?m=1
A staple in our house- the perfect dinner for when you think you have no food in the house.

Murane · 19/05/2018 22:35

Tomato puree and sardines makes a nice sauce for pasta or polenta. You can add veg, olives, capers etc.

BikeRunSki · 19/05/2018 22:38

My dc bizarrely love them (ffs dd doesn’t even like chips or baked beans). Take out the backbones, mash a bit, put on toast.

Drain some of the oil off. Mash and spread on hot toast. Drizzle lemon juice and pepper liberally on top.

Loads of recipes online for spaghetti / linguine with sardines. Yum.
Alternatively I eat them directly out of the tin, in a most uncivilised fashion.

snufflehuff · 19/05/2018 22:48

Great suggestions here. I think I'm going to start nice and easy with toast.

Do they have many bones? Are they suitable for toddlers, or will he get a bone stuck in his throat?

Every day lunch for my DH who eats them on toast.
I put them in my lunch box with salad stuff and a blob of Hellman's.
When my youngest DC was tiny his Dad would come home for lunch and little DS would also have toast and sardines.
They are very nutritious and easy.

BestZebbie · 19/05/2018 22:58

Aren't they only to be eaten at midnight, with ginger beer, whilst wrapped in 'a rug'?

Iamalltheyhavenow · 19/05/2018 23:06

Hot brown toast, butter, mashed sardines, a bit of vinegar, sliced tomatoes. Bones are soft, and just break up in the mashing process, and are an excellent source of calcium. Food of the Gods IMO!

eggncress · 19/05/2018 23:07

Bones are very soft and crumbly.. you can eat or remove and no chance of bones getting stuck in throat. Great in salads or eat on toast. Sometimes I eat straight from the tin, drizzled with lemon juice and a sprinkling of black pepper.Any juice / oil left in tin to be mopped up with fresh crusty bread.

Urbanbeetler · 19/05/2018 23:11

Mash the bones in - great source of calcium.

snufflehuff · 21/05/2018 18:15

Just had my first taste of sardines- in tomato purée on toast. Delicious!

Go down the bottom of the garden, or preferably bottom of your street and eat them without inflicting the pong on anyone else. Dispose of tin in a neighbours bin who annoys you.

GinandGingerBeer · 21/05/2018 18:49

I can smell you from here tbh.
