OK, my salad normally consists of lettace, spring onion, cucumber, grated carrot and grated cheese with a little light salad cream.
I think its about time i tried something new. I don't like tomatoes though. Or tuna/fishy stuff!
TIA

WanderingTrolley · 02/05/2007 13:26

Just re-read the OP. Tortoise wants to try something new, from which we infer she means new-of-a-salad-nature.

So my new suggestion is try a pizza, or cheesecake.

Not heard of falafel and tzatziki or lollo rosso. What are they?

Yes forgot about egg. Sometimes have egg too.

Will look for rocket or frissy stuff(ikwym!)

WanderingTrolley Yes new as i salad idea is what i meant. Fatty food is out as i have just had gall stones confirmed at a scan.

Loads of good ideas here. Had forgotten about beetroot and radishe. Not had them for ages so hope i still like them!

I haven't actually tried any seeds/pine nuts. May buy some to try but just don't fancy them! Do i have to do anything with the seeds or are they ready to eat?

Spinach (raw), watercress
Mangetout or sugarsnaps
raw mushrooms
infact whatever veg is in fridge!
cucumber
occasional beansprouts

and with - you won't like so much as am doing WW so counting points but alternatives are:

prawn mayo
egg mayo
tuna mayo

(i know plenty of mayo but accounted for)

and lashings of lemon juice

Re: gallstones, Tortoise. My mum has successfully flushed hers out using apple juice/ epsom salts/ olive oil programme she found online. Her consultant has just sent off the stones she passed for testing as he didn't believe it could be done. Suffice to say she doesn't have any pain any more since doing it. Worth googling...

tortoise · 02/05/2007 14:11

Thanks tyg. As far as i am aware they will return though. Thats why removing the gall bladder is the normal treatment. I have to see the dr on the 10th to discuss options.

oh and potato salad, but with salad dressing rather than mayonnaise. and red onions. served warm.

jellybellie · 02/05/2007 14:15

falafel are meatball sized balls made with chick peas and seasoning and stuff - don't sound particularly tasty but they are lovely - also vegetarian and pretty healthy - Tesco sell Cauldron Foods organic brand but I think you can get them in all supermarkets. Tzatziki is a Greek dip made with yoghurt, cucumber and mint - I think is relatively low cal low fat too

fishie · 02/05/2007 14:20

i mix 1/3rd mayo with 2/3rds 0%fat greek yog and use that for potato salad or coleslaw. ooh try raw kohl rabi grated with carrot and lemon juice.

lollo rosso is yet another salad leaf.

bundle · 02/05/2007 14:21

don't need to do anything to the seeds - though i bought a ready-roasted pack (from waitrose - sunflower, sesame and punpkin) and you could dry-fry them in a pan to intensity the flavour

Oblomov · 02/05/2007 14:21

Yum, yum, yum. Great ideas. I feel inspired.

Oblomov · 02/05/2007 14:40

Thomcat has got beetroot all wrong. Borsch is one of the best thuigs ever.

tortoise · 02/05/2007 21:32

I had radish, carrot, cucumber, new potatoes and cos lettace tonight. It was very nice.
Couldn't find any beetroot (small town) or pine nuts. Seeds very expensive!
I will look when i do a tesco shop.

Thanks for all the great ideas.

Just wanted to mention that raw grated beetroot is nice. Don't personally like it cooked or pickled.

heifer · 03/05/2007 11:20

This is my everyday type salad

leaves (whatever you have)
red onion
tomotoes
cucumber
red pepper
yellow pepper
celery
feta cheese
olives

then a dressing of white wine vinegar and olive oil..

Sugarmagnolia · 03/05/2007 13:53

dried cranberries are lovely! they go really well in a salad with red onion, cucumber and french dressing. walnuts or pine nuts are nice in that combo too.

Lovecat · 03/05/2007 14:15

I don't like tomatoes either, but I do love the little Pomodorino ones, they're lush!

Otherwise -

Avocado
Rocket
Watercress
Grilled peppers (or raw if you like crunch)
boiled eggs
grated raw courgette (surprisingly nice!)

Dress with macademia nut or avocado oil - pricey but a little goes a long way (and it's 'good' fats!)

Carmenere · 03/05/2007 14:19

I just had a delicious salad of baby spinach leaves with avocado, organic bacon, roasted peppers, croutons, blanched green beans, Parmesan shavings with a dressing of balsamic vinegar, meaux mustard and Cretan extra virgin olive oil. Poncy admittedly but rather fab

PiusIX · 03/05/2007 21:46

Grilled chicken breast
Coriander
Lime juice
Pine nuts
