What new recipes are you trying this winter?

So far this year I’ve tried three and they’ve been real hits:

Sausage pasta with broccoli chilli and sweet tomatoes - from Jamie’s Super Food Family Classics

Thai Green Coconut Mussels - from Ocado magazine

Spiced red lentil soup - from Nigel Slater’s Christmas Chronicles

Next to try is Waitrose magazine Spiced Apple Pie Porridge

What have you tried recently or are going to give a whirl soon?

I had a Turkish cookbook for Christmas so have been making things from that- sumac chicken drumstick, different types of pide etc.

I've also recently tried an orange marinated chicken wing recipe from sirocco by Sabrina ghaypur- if you have the book I urge you to try them. Perfect tv snack on a Saturday night.

I'm eager to buy the new Nigel slater- is it worth it? Or more of the same if I have all the kitchen diaries?

Taffeta · 11/01/2018 12:42

I should try more Turkish and Middle Eastern food this year, sounds delicious. I’ve always enjoyed it when I’ve eaten it, but rarely make it.

I love The Christmas Chronicles! It’s probably got less recipes in it than any of his books, including the Diaries. Like the diaries, it’s especially relevant to a certain time of year. He gives the full Nigel treatment to Christmas, including cards, candles and decorations!

Ooh, will have to get the Christmas chronicles! I want to try more Indian cooking this year, I will crack fluffy naan breads too!

Taffeta · 11/01/2018 18:15

I’ve never made naans - are they hard?

I’d like to try flatbreads as everyone says how easy they are.

I saw Tom Kerridge doing a low fat KFC buttermilk chicken thing earlier this week so having a go at that now.

FlukeSkyeRunner · 11/01/2018 19:05

Naans are easy. I use Meera sodhas recipe. They freeze well too.

Rainatnight · 11/01/2018 19:10

Someone on another thread recommend Hugh Fearnley-Whittinstall's Veg Every Day book and I'm working my way through that (as a committed carnivore!).

Last night we had North African squash and chickpea stew. It was absolutely delicious. I also made his red cabbage, orange, parsnip and date salad to go with it, which was surprisingly amazing

worriedaboutchristmas · 11/01/2018 20:30

I second meera sodjha naans. Easy.

Flatbreads are also super easy- I use hfw veg everyday recipe. Anyone with the book should try them- and the same dough made into the pizzas. I make it at least weekly. It's an overall brilliant book imo.

Hastalapasta · 12/01/2018 10:00

I have loads of the river cottage books! Problem with the naan and flat bread is that I burn them. My bread turns out fabulously, so not entitled sure what I am doing wrong.
I shall persevere!

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 12/01/2018 10:53

Tonight I'm trying Brazil nut refried beans and tomato burrito rice from BBC Good Food magazine

My oven cuts out whenever I try and get it hot enough for naan Sad we are getting a new kitchen soon so hopefully our new oven will been naan-proof

blue25 · 12/01/2018 11:11

This week we've made Mary Berry's Tarragon Chicken which was ok and Jamie Oliver's Chicken Jalfrezi with blackened peppers which was lovely.

Next week we're trying Joe Wick's minestrone soup and his sausage and red wine casserole.

I'm also making a ginger and walnut loaf from Little Green Spoon.

Taffeta · 12/01/2018 14:10

Some of these sound divine!

I’ve just ordered Made in India. Any recommendations other than naan?

OP posts:
DarthNigel · 12/01/2018 15:08

Jamie Oliver's mustardy sticky beef, from the 5 ingredients book. It was gooooood.

fitflopqueen · 12/01/2018 15:16

Spinach, sweet potato and lentil dhal from BBC good food site, am not a veggie but this is delicious

BlackPeppercorn · 12/01/2018 15:41

The BBC good food curried parsnip soup went down a storm this week here. I gave DH a taste without telling him what it was - he declared it lovely and had it for dinner and lunch the next day. He hates even the look of parsnips and has never eaten one in his life.

redexpat · 12/01/2018 15:57

Jamie Olivers ultimate veg lasagne from comfort food is fafforama but the end result is bloody delicious. Tip: make double the veg sauce then freeze half so its slightly less faffing next time.

worriedaboutchristmas · 12/01/2018 18:35

Oh don't get me started on made in India! It's great! All of the recipes! But in particular- the samosas (particularly the lamb ones), the aubergine tomato curry, the cauliflower curry, mother's chicken curry, phav biv, the masala burgers and chips, the workers curry, the everyday dhal.

All are in regular rotation here

Taffeta · 12/01/2018 18:47

Oooh sounds fabulous!

I made the slow cooked lamb with harissa, tomatoes and aubergines from The Roasting Tin by Rukmini Iyer which was really delicious. Also very into working my way through the salads in Leon's Happy Salads which all look delicious which I find unusual for a salad recipe book. Next I'm going to try roasted aubergine, sweet potato and spinach curry from the Store Cupboard vegetarian which I haven't had all that much luck with. I have a slight problem with buying cookery books so trying to work through a few books and see which ones can go so I can put my new ones somewhere!

Taffeta · 12/01/2018 19:44

That’s a great idea everything. I’ve loads of cookery books, but most only use 3-4 recipes from.

Exception seems to always be Nigel - I dip into his books every now & again and always find a new recipe I want to try.

The Brazil nut refried beans were underwhelming. Tomorrow I'm trying mushroom Bourguignon so hopefully that will be more successful :)

SplitEndsBushyEyebrows · 12/01/2018 20:42

I don’t have a lot of time for cooking these days, so only able to experiment with quick meals. So far this year we’ve tried...

-lamb orzo (Ocado online) this was so good!

-Nigella’s orange, chicken and chorizo traybake; was okay but I think it needs a really good salad/veg on the side

-Hob to table moussaka (not entirely authentic but quick and easy and very very tasty!)

-Jamie Oliver Jools pregnant pasta - will make this again!

-BBC good food best ever brownies and lemon drizzle cake. The brownies are genuinely the best I’ve ever had Grin

-BBC good food chilli, so simple - no idea why I ever bothered with a spice mix.

I have my eye on a coconut and swede dhal recipe too - Abel & Cole online and some of the hairy biker curry recipes!
I also want to try a West African peanut chicken curry!

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 13/01/2018 20:16

Mushroom Bourguignon was very good

Taffeta · 14/01/2018 08:50

Mmmm that sounds divine!

Buttermilk pancakes went down very well for brunch yesterday, don’t usually have buttermilk in but got it for the buttermilk oven chicken (which was average so won’t bother with that again).

Spiced apple pie porridge this morning!

OP posts:
worriedaboutchristmas · 14/01/2018 14:42

I'm trying out a Nigel slater squash and cavolo Nero stew today- from tender.

And making a Spanish and sage ravioli with pine nut butter from Rachel Allen's home cooking in the week.

And I'll try Diana Henry's chestnut and squash risotto from her change of appetite

Guess who's got three squash to use up this week? Grin

Taffeta · 14/01/2018 15:49
