What to put on a vegetarian child's sandwich?

It's my dd's birthday party in a few weeks and I don't have any ideas for sandwich fillings.

We have decided to provide the children's party food in the little card lunch pales.
My issue is we are vegetarian and don't fancy making meat sandwiches. We are planning on including a babybel, box of raisins and another snack item which I haven't thought of yet in the lunch pale. Because of the babybel and some of our friends thinking that all vegetarians eat is cheese we really don't want to do cheese sandwiches.
My dd loves hummus and grated carrot sandwiches, salad and quorn slices etc but I don't think they're very appealing to the masses and also hummus could be messy.

Does anyone have any ideas of vegetarian sandwich fillings which aren't cheese, aren't super messy to eat but most children will eat?

All kids will be younger than 5 with most being 2.

Not a sandwich but how about quorn sausage rolls with ketchup? Or the little quorn sausages? They are tasty and Kids wont know the difference. Also crisp butties!

We're veggie and had dd's 6th birthday party last week, we did cheese sandwiches, jam sandwiches (which went down much better than the cheese!), veggie sausage rolls, Pom bears, fruit&veg, haribo strawberries and chocolate buttons.
Dd has a peanut allergy, I always let parents know in advance.

Maybe don't do a sandwich if it's so difficult? Why not make little quiche type things or sonething along the lines of samosas?

Oncewaswho · 04/10/2017 09:26

I'd always go for platters of food and plates so they can choose for themselves - whenever mine got invited to parties with boxes there was a lot of swapping going on as not everyone likes the same things (I have a jam hater for example). Also it's more sociable for them not to be hidden behind a box as they eat. I'd go with dairylea, jam and marmite as fillings.

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 04/10/2017 09:31

Why would you not use the Quorn slices? The committed carnivores won't know the difference and it will feel familiar to those children who only like to eat ham in sandwiches.

Wow butter which is made from soya.

kateandme · 04/10/2017 10:43

what about buying some pastry cups and putting some tomato cheesy veggie filling
egg mayo rolls
cucumber cream cheese roll
salmon pate.
jam.with young kids as these they would love you forever!
I'm just thinking on you mentioning cosco.they would do great deal on bulk for rolls.cheese spread like premula.they have all sorts of falvours now.and cosco thinking on the added snack whats about mini cheddar they do them in bulk bags.also what about one of those snack boxes or mini choc bards which at cosco you could get big enough bags to share out.

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 04/10/2017 10:44

Egg mayo
Mashed banana

kateandme · 04/10/2017 10:46

could you make up say 3 or 4 (however many you have time/bothered to make) fillings like a production line lol.
so one pile you've made jam/nutella
next cheese spread/cream cheese
qourn slices and cheese or whatever fillings
cut into triangles. then give each tray a quarter each.so that all eventuality and tastes Is catered and they might go"ooh I like this swap so I can have another" then it means your sorted any which way

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 04/10/2017 10:46

Whatever you usually put in your DC's sandwiches. Confused

SandSnakeofDorne · 04/10/2017 10:50

None of what you're planning sounds like treat party food. Do something like butter and hundreds and thousands for the sandwiches, at least it's a bit fun.

Chestervase1 · 04/10/2017 10:52

How are eggs vegetarian?

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 04/10/2017 10:53

Chester an unfertilised egg isn't an animal. 😆

NC4now · 04/10/2017 10:55

I used to make jam sandwiches on white bread and cut them into heart or star shapes with biscuit cutters. They looked super cute and always went down a storm!

mammmamia · 04/10/2017 13:04

Lots of vegetarians do not eat eggs.

Chestervase1 · 04/10/2017 15:10

I am aware it’s not an animal but it is from an animal. Strange definition of vegetarian as I have said. Vegetarian someone on a plant based diet.

Chestervase1 · 04/10/2017 15:10

I suppose they est fish and chicken too

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/10/2017 15:12

No, a vegetarian is someone who doesn't eat anything from a dead animal.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/10/2017 15:14

If you ruled out anything not plant-based, honey would be a no no. Obviously there are some issues around dairy farming which make many people avoid anything from milk, but I expect most people who are in a position to keep a cow, goat or sheep and milk it would think that was ethical enough, if it didn't end in the animal or its offspring being slaughtered.

BeyondThePage · 04/10/2017 15:15

Chester - are you confusing Vegetarian with Vegan? eggs and milk are from animals, but no animal had to die (DEBATABLE I KNOW for milk) to put them in your diet.

BestZebbie · 04/10/2017 15:20

Aren't babybels going to cause a load of faff as every single child has to then have their parent lean over them and open them, and they then use the wax as playdoh?

Chestervase1 · 04/10/2017 15:36

BeyondthePage no I am not confused by vegan/vegetarian

blueberrypie0112 · 04/10/2017 15:39

Peanut butter with jelly sandwiches. You can use almond butter or sunbutter (for kids with allergies)

Butterymuffin · 04/10/2017 15:45

Just do cheese sandwiches and jam sandwiches. That will be fine for a party. Then add in cucumber slices and carrot sticks (slice your own cucumber, buy a bag of carrot sticks), crisps, some small cakes / muffins / party rings or whatever and that'll be fine. Maybe add in Twiglets and / or cold cheese and tomato / vegetable pizza slices.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 04/10/2017 15:55

Cucumber and marmite together. It's amazing.
