Breakfast ideas for child who won't eat cereal

thepatchworkcat · 26/08/2017 18:33

Four year old doesn't like cereal (occasionally dry shreddies or coco pops are tolerated). He ends up eating lots of bready things and then being hungry (so he says!) all morning. He's starting school soon and I really feel I should be giving him healthier/heartier breakfasts!

He currently eats
Bagels
Mini brioche
Jam
Toast
Spanish tortilla

He doesn't like:
Cheese
Bananas
Porridge

Any suggestions outside of the (breakfast) box would be most welcome!

Overnight oats?

Porridge oats with yoghurt and frozen berries and honey. I don't defrost the berries we just let it sit for a minute ...

Sorry if this has already been suggested 🙂

Op did say he didn't like porridge, but I don't like cooked porridge but often have soaked oats with berries ( I defrost mine though) raw soaked oats with some fruit and yogurt is very different to cooked

Breakfast muffins? Either mini egg muffins with veggies/cheese in them or bread-based muffins with fruit?

Mashed avocado on toast or bagel
Tinned sardines on toast

If he is getting hungry maybe up the protein.

Thanks all!
It'll be a no to cereal, granola, oats, porridge, avocado, tinned sardine etc I'm afraid but a few ideas to think about! I keep saying he's not fussy but maybe he is! Shock

Would he have porridge with honey in? It really sweetens it up and makes it taste better!

Alternatively maybe try a quesadilla? You can put pretty much anything you want in them: chicken, ham, cheese, salad, avocado, pesto, eggs etc.

It was on the Guardian once that they had conducted an experiment and offered a group of mice cereals and milk and another group of mice the cereal box and milk. The rats that ate the cardboard box grew more. The cereal was all the usual processed types most people eat and think as healthy like corn flakes, rice crispies etc. They said that they have been processed so much that they offer no nutrition.

Chocorabbit: that theory has been downgraded to 'myth' .

DS4 loves breakfast burritos: mexican rice, refried beans & then egg &/or bacon, ham, chicken - whatever you have in the fridge, plus a bit of grated cheese on top, all rolled up in a flour tortilla. I notice you can get these in all sorts of flavours now.

www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/foods-high-in-calcium/

There are many foods like white beans, green vegetables, that will have more calcium than milk

So don't worry about him not having milk with breakfast, the milk marketing board did a good job back in the day

Some of these are quite time consuming and involved for anyone trying to get kids ready and get out to work!

OP, oooh, yes, he is fussy, but many 4 year olds are Smile

Kedgeree, my aunt makes a batch and freezes in individual pots that she microwaves.

Eggs, can be hard boiled in advance, scotch eggs?

Half of Europe have ham and cheese for breakfast.

Breakfast muffins.

Pancakes - make a batch and freeze a couple at a time in foil.

If you (he) like the Japanese theme then cold omelette, make omelette the night before, either traditional with mirin etc or maybe just cheese./ Obviously can be made fresh but I'm trying to think of quick things.

Whoa so many responses, just saw these!

Ha ha yes just to confirm he does not like banana, cheese, blueberries, tomatoes (unless in sauce), dried fruit/raisins, avocado, anything nutty or oaty etc etc. But there's plenty to go on so thanks all.

He will drink milk separately from cereal (plus I'm actually trying to go vegan so I'm a fan of alternative milks anyway) so I'm not worried about that.

Today he had Spanish tortilla with carrots, followed by a mini brioche and jam!

Think of things that are on a breakfast buffet.

I've sometimes been surprised what's been offered at breakfast time. I once saw casserole and vegetable rice as part of an international buffet. No, I'm not suggesting you prepare a full-on buffet at breakfast time !!

Eat around the world ?

The Germans like garlic sausage and cheese at breakfast. Not sure what the Japanese eat for breakfast. You see where I'm going with this ?
