What do you eat for breakfast to stay full until lunch?

I'm not a big breakfast eater but because of that I swear I spend most of my mornings perpetually hungry at uni and then have to fight the urge not to eat my lunch by about 11am. The other day I had three scotch pancakes with loads of butter, a babybell, and a nutri-grain bar (and obligatory cup of tea) for breakfast and was actually full until lunchtime. It was brill.

I've tried eating cereal but the portion sizes on the box are so tiny but then I worry if I eat much more it's bad for me...but then again not as bad as eating lots of crap snack stuff before lunch surely. If you eat cereal do you stick with the recommended portion sizes?

What and how much do you eat for breakfast to keep full until lunch??

Morning hunger is a weird thing - if I feel it first thing on wakening - it never lasts and it often means that I can avoid eating till after lunch.

eckythumpenallthat · 11/02/2017 09:48

My bmi is over 25 but below 30

MeadowHay · 11/02/2017 11:30

Yesterday I was working from home and pretty much grazed from waking at 9am all the way to eating my lunch at 12pm Blush.

I just calculated my BMI online and it is 20. But I'm not sure why anyone would be so bothered about staying under 22 when anything up to 25 is healthy. Tbh I don't really think about my weight much or anything other than weighing myself every few months or so just to check it's all hunky dory still.

If you have eggs for breakfast, what do you have for lunch? Because I sometimes have eggs for lunch or dinner.

Peanut butter bagels and stuff is a good idea. I should try the oats thing, think DH would really like that as well so we'll give it a go.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys I'm taking note!

Full fat breakfast fill me up, which is:

Full bull of Porridge in full fat milk, with spoonfull of jam & 2 spoonfulls of peanut butter.

(or)

1 whole avocado on one slice of bread, with chunks of cheese

(or)

pot of humous (the large pot which equates to about 800 kcal). May eat that with cucumber or mushrooms or tomatoes.

Porridge with almonds, banana and chia seeds

mrsplum2015 · 11/02/2017 12:04

One slice granary toast, half an avocado and a slice of cheddar / 4 or 5 cubes of feta / 1 egg. Never feel hungry before 12 30 and I have breakfast between 7 and 8.

PollyPerky · 11/02/2017 12:04

One boiled egg, one slice gluten free toast.
Or two eggs scrambled.
Or one egg and 1 rasher of streaky bacon, grilled.

I think they key is not to expect to feel full!
We aren't going to die by feeling a bit hungry. You don't have to always have that 'full' feeling. I eat brekkie around 7.30 -8 and lunch about 12-1pm. But on days I've gone till 2pm I am hungry but ride it out- you can get used to feeling a bit empty!

yeOldeTrout · 11/02/2017 12:05

"I'm not sure why anyone would be so bothered about staying under 22 when anything up to 25 is healthy. "

ha! b/c I would be fat with a BMI of 24.5. I don't care what the charts or MNers say, another 1.5 stone would make ME definitely unhelpfully unhealthy fat. Or course I could be 3 stone overweight and be even more unhealthy fat, but that doesn't make the pointless 1.5 stone somehow ok.

HerRoyalNotness · 11/02/2017 12:07

Lately it's been oats with fresh blueberries mixed in or a bowl of fruit with Greek yoghurt, honey and handful of nuts sprinkled on it.

PollyPerky · 11/02/2017 12:08

Meadow I usually have soup for lunch- bought ham and pea, or cauliflower and kale, or homemade carrot, sweet potato and almond milk, or chicken broth made with left over carcase.

If no soup, then usually an avocado (sometimes on its own with a few walnuts) or filled with a few prawns, or a small salad with a small amount of cheese, sardines or tuna. (I work from home so can prepare stuff.) And a small amount of full fat plain Greek yoghurt, then an apple mid afternoon.

PollyPerky · 11/02/2017 12:09

Oh and my go to snack is almond butter- on an oatcake or spooned straight from the jar Blush

andpropersteel · 11/02/2017 12:10

Poached eggs and avocado on toast.

Turkish style breakfast- omelette with olives, cheese, cucumber, bread, tomato etc on the side (My favourite!)

I used to have a "second breakfast" at work too (I'd cycle commute so I'd get hungry), something protein based like rice cakes with peanut butter or nuts and yogurt.

PollyPerky · 11/02/2017 12:13

BMI is a crude measurement. Waist measurement is more important- it should be no more than half your height. So someone who is 5 ft- (60 inches) - should have a waist no more than 30 inches. It's where the weight is carried that counts. I am potentially apple shaped, so although my BMI is low, all excess weight goes round my middle and I end up with very little difference between my hips and waist, which is dangerous.

Also , BMI of 25 is the maximum! They do say your BMI should be at the lower end of the range. It's a bit like saying the speed limit is 70mph- doesn't mean you have to always drive to the maximum allowed!

MeadowHay · 11/02/2017 13:09

Oh I'm not saying people should aim for a BMI of 25 and get bigger and bigger until they reach it! Just that as long as it's in the healthy range I see no reason to worry about it, that's all.

I think my BMI is around 22 - in general I feel like I'm carrying excess weight when it's higher. I'm tall and an hourglass shape so waist size is always small, I feel and look best at BMI of 20 but find it hard to maintain long term.

Topnotes · 11/02/2017 19:45

Alpen with milk sorts me out

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 11/02/2017 20:16

The only thing that keeps me full until lunchtime is a massive cooked breakfast but that's not sustainable every day!
I usually have porridge at home first thing and then a 2nd breakfast of yogurt, fruit and a bit of granola at work at about 10.30. Then I am good until lunch! The yogurt really is surpisingly filling, especially if you have full fat

PollyPerky · 12/02/2017 15:18

It doesn't work like that though meadow.
My BMI is just under 19 and always has been. I did an experiment to see what I'd weigh if my BMI was 25. I'd need to put on almost 3 stones! Considering my total weight gain when pregnant was 1 stone you can see how it's crazy to work on just BMI.

Crunchyside · 12/02/2017 15:29

PollyPerky That's true... Funnily enough I just did my BMI based on my current weight and it's 25. I'm 6 months pregnant and more than a stone heavier than my normal weight!

mumobsessedwithdamp · 15/02/2017 20:45

I find two slices of peanut butter and banana on toast keep my well filled up. And it's yummy!

DeliveredByKiki · 16/02/2017 01:49

Another one who tends to not eat breakfast, if I do I tend to be starving within 2 hours.

However, I just completed whole30 which says have breakfast so I did and as it's a reset that has no carbs at all I was eating protein for breakfast and it really filled me up until late lunch.

I got really bored of eggs really quickly though so would sometimes have smoked salmon and sautéed spinach, Paleo pancakes (banana, egg, almond butter), mashed sweet potato with cinnamon, sometimes I'd just make a chopped salad with tuna the night before and actually got quite used to have a lunch style lighter meal at breakfast. Sometimes soup too. Stuff like that you can prepare the night before if needs be. I also found then I'd be happy with a fairly light lunch then full meal at dinner time

lubeybooby · 16/02/2017 01:53

I don't - I don't skip it either though ( I shall explain!) I avoid kicking off the hunger cycle til after midday,

I have breakfast at midday, then lunch about 3/4pm, and then dinner 7/8pm

if I eat at typical breakfast time like 8am or before I am starving by 11am no matter what i have

Destinysdaughter · 21/02/2017 07:43

Gregg's steak bake! Blush

Raisinbrain · 21/02/2017 08:11

My everyday breakfast is a smoothie made with unsweetened almond milk, cottage cheese, peanut butter, cinnamon, banana, frozen berries, chia seeds and linseeds.

As there is lots of talk of eggs, I often have an egg as a healthy afternoon snack but it's an unpleasant struggle to eat on its own (even with a pinch of salt). What do you do with a hard boiled egg to make it more palatable?

ScrapThatThen · 21/02/2017 08:21

A slice of date and walnut bread and a piece of fruit.
