Storecupboard clearout/useup thread

Inspired by the 'freezer roulette' thread a while ago (which I did and now have a lovely organised freezer with properly labelled food! 😄) I'm now aiming at my store cupboards. Just opening the doors without moving anything, I can see tinned fish, random boxes of specialty dried pasta I've used once, coconut flour (why?!?) and a variety of other stuff that really shouldn't be there. I can't bear wasting food though, so I'm determined to find tasty ways to use up as much of it as possible. I'm spending time this afternoon making a list of what I've got, then I'm going to try and use up at least two things off of the list per week. Anyone else up for a cupboard clearout?

DYA. Presoaking.

treaclesoda · 06/02/2017 13:34

I want to join this!

I get loads of wee bits and pieces as part of hampers every Christmas that end up sitting there with me wondering what to do with them.

I got a lovely tea selection for Christmas but in amongst all the nice stuff was Lapsang Souchong and I just can't stomach drinking that at all. Is there anything at all that can be done with it? Or is it straight to the compost bin?

ppeatfruit · 06/02/2017 13:37

Barley cooks quicker if you pre soak , esp. if it's very old Gasp (hello) btw

FreeButtonBee · 06/02/2017 13:40

Ppeat. Inspired! I will make one on Thursday once the triple birthday weekend cakes have subsided. Yes, I am very tired after DH and DTs birthdays within 3 days of each other. Thank god im off this week!

ppeatfruit · 06/02/2017 13:40

treacle You could make tea with it and add it to a litre of rainwater for a good soak for your plants esp if they need extra acid. or as you say add the tea to your compost.

CatOnAWarmTinRoof · 06/02/2017 13:41

Chestnuts unused at Christmas, plus far too much dried fruit if various types are going to get mixed up with some of the breadcrumbs (3 bags!) in the freezer plus a sauted onion and a chopped up apple to make stuffing. Most probably a pork fillet.
Pork fillets are surprisingly cheap and practically anything can find its way into a stuffing

It's a great fertiliser for pot plants. I'm one of those gardeners who doesn't change the earth in my pots I just give them a mild leftover coffee and or tea 'feed'. It works well!

ppeatfruit · 06/02/2017 13:43

Mixed with rain water of course.

ppeatfruit · 06/02/2017 13:46

Yes put your feet up FreeButton Grin

Use evaporated milk to make this cheese sauce, sounds wierd, is amazing with chips or tortilla chips.

treaclesoda · 06/02/2017 14:45

Thanks ppeat I'll let the plants enjoy it then. Smile

JontyDoggle37 · 06/02/2017 17:26

Glad I'm not the only one feeding tea to my plants lol!
I haven't managed to work anything into today's menu from the store cupboards although that's mainly because lunch and dinner have come straight out of the freezer.
Tomorrow I'll be using up some sun dried tomatoes in a 'chicken and sun-dried toms in cream sauce with veg meal', which will be dinner. Lunch will be from the freezer again (one of my batch cooked soups). Will aim to use up a tin of mackerel on Thursday in a pasta lunch thing as well. DH cooks Mon and Wednesdays and has a limited repertoire so not much chance for him to use many cupboard bits up in an inventive way, so it's down to me either with lunches or dinner on Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sunday...

This is a great berry ripple ice cream recipe that uses condensed milk. It specifies the low fat version, but any type of condensed milk will do. I'm sure you could use evaporated milk instead and add some sugar or honey (not sure how much - but as I understand it the difference between condensed and evaporated milk is that the former has added sugar and the latter doesn't).

AdaColeman · 06/02/2017 17:46

Use evap milk to make Gypsy Tart, a true classic pudding.

It would be criminal to waste Lapsang Souchong, drink it with a Chinese meal, or soak dried fruit in it to make tea bread/bara brith.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 06/02/2017 17:50

I'm in please! Can't. Ring myself to check what is lurking in cupboards yet. I am a rubbish cook but DH is pretty good. Will have a root around later and see what I can use up :) . Have decluttered lots of chocolate but don't think that really counts.

ppeatfruit · 07/02/2017 11:54

Dh bought a box of prunes and they've been in the fridge for a while (i know they didn't need to be ) So I made a lovely sugar free jam with them grape juice and water yesterday. It's lovely and so easy because they had been de pipped already!

Oh yes Tea bread is lovely. Though Lapsang is an acquired strong taste Ada , treacle may not like it even in a cake type bread! I love treacle in cakes though.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 07/02/2017 14:35

GaspO I think it may be difficult to sub condensed milk for evaporated because of the consistency. Evaporated milk is really really runny, condensed much thicker.

toastyarmadillo · 08/02/2017 17:36

Tried evaporated milk in a curry and it split on it, made everyone eat it anyway by claiming it was deliberate. Taste wise it was fine just an odd texture as a result. Probably won't try that again. Evaporated milk is supper runny compared to condensed for anone trying to use it up.

Golden syrup three large tins and a squeeze bottle..... suggestions other than treacle pud?

treaclesoda · 08/02/2017 17:39

Golden syrup. Mmmmmmm.

Pineapple upside down cake
Caramel squares
Butterscotch sauce for ice cream

I'm sure I'll think of more Smile

toastyarmadillo · 08/02/2017 17:41

Fab pasta sauce out of a Christmas themed bousain cheese, melted in a pan with a slosh of milk, add chopped up christmas ham stashed in the freezer or any left over meat! Chuck over pasta, watch the kids eat without whinging! Whoop whoop!

JontyDoggle37 · 08/02/2017 18:02

Toasty that sounds lovely.
Golden syrup...hmmm.in off to do some research as I've got two Tina of that for some reason so it would be good to use up one at least...

The Lyles website has some great ideas for Golden Syrup, including this sweet chilli tomatoes on toast recipe:www.lylesgoldensyrup.com/recipe/lyles-sweet-chilli-tomatoes-on-toast and there's another lovely one on there for sticky glazed ribs!
