I thought it was only M&S who recalled theirs?

Funnily enough I tried making some yesterday-chick peas, lemon juice, garlic and oil.
Think I made the mistake of not rinsing the chick peas and then usin extra virgin olive oil-wasn't very nice.

Will watch this thread with interest though for a better recipe.

kittylette · 20/02/2007 10:58

why have they done that?

oliveoil · 20/02/2007 11:00

well in the paper yesterday it said that Tecso, Co Op, M&S and Sainsburys have

made by same supplier I think

salmonella kitty

Salmonella risk in some.

LIZS · 20/02/2007 11:01

Perhaps add a spoon of tahini paste too.

KathyMCMLXXII · 20/02/2007 11:01

Home-made humous never tastes anything like shop-bought - don't know what they put in theirs.

anorak · 20/02/2007 11:02

You need to use tahini in it.

It's a sesame seed paste, you can buy it in health food stores and some supermarkets. It isn't going to taste right without it.

oliveoil · 20/02/2007 11:02

I know

we have tried and dh makes everything from scratch, we don't 'do' packets and jars

but houmous has to be Tesco or Sainsburys at a pinch

Hello LIZS

pesme · 20/02/2007 11:03

chickpeas, lemon juice garlic, olive oil, tahini (i prefer to use light) and seaseme seeds if you like. blend to taste. if you really want it to taste like supermarket hummous you will need a good blender and a heavy hand with the oil.

ComeOVeneer · 20/02/2007 11:03

200g cooked chickpeas
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp tahini
1 tbsp olive oil
1 lemon, juiced
Salt and freshly ground pepper

Put the first five ingredients in a food processor and process until almost smooth (you may need a few extra tbsp water or lemon juice to loosen it). Season and put in an airtight container. Chill until needed.

oliveoil · 20/02/2007 11:04

can I use tinned chickpeas?

OP posts:
Whoooosh · 20/02/2007 11:04

Ah-I knew I had forgotten something! I even have some in the cupboard.Tried it on toast once on it's own and was surprised at how bitter it was.

Twiglett · 20/02/2007 11:04

I make most things from scratch

have NEVER been able to make a decent houmous though ..

I wouldn't bother .. its quite shocking the amount of oil you have to put in

Twiglett · 20/02/2007 11:06

have tesco's recalled the one in the kosher aisle too because I don't think that'd be the same manufacturer .. its slightly different from the standard one but ok

pesme · 20/02/2007 11:06

no you can't use tinned you must move to the middle eastern country and grow them yourself. (yes tinned should be fine, organic ones do taste better)

LIZS · 20/02/2007 11:06

Defintiely could use tinned chickpeas just drain them well and rinse if not in water.

oliveoil · 20/02/2007 11:06

sigh

will try the shops then at lunch as see if I can find any tubs

dd1 and dd2 love it and it gets veggies in

someone will not come on and tell me it is full of salt and doom

OP posts:
KathyMCMLXXII · 20/02/2007 11:06

tinned chickpeas just as good.

oliveoil · 20/02/2007 11:07

did you pass your driving test oo?

anorak · 20/02/2007 11:09

If you don't want it loaded up with too much oil you can use water to loosen the texture.

I fear the oil and salt are what makes supermarket blend taste good though.

ComeOVeneer · 20/02/2007 11:15

If your supermarket has a kosher section you can still get it as that comes from a different supplier, to the others (those are from Iceland I think, the country not the shop).

ComeOVeneer · 20/02/2007 11:17

Snap Twig.

KathyMCMLXXII · 20/02/2007 11:18

But if they're not getting too much salt and doom in the rest of their diet I wouldn't worry too much about the salt and doom in humous (sorry, I just love that phrase) - it has good stuff in it too, after all.
And as you say, it gets vegetables in....
