I don't get "instant" porridge stuff

So the selling point of it is that you mix it with milk, bang it in the microwave, it's done...

but with proper oats you.... mix them with milk, put them in the microwave, it's done.

Am I missing something here?

I agree. Although porridge done in the pan is always superior.

My dh only eats the instant stuff. He finds the real thing too lumpy. As I'm the only one in the house who likes it I never bother making the real thing (don't have a microwave btw.)

those golden syrup flavour ones. ha! what on earth is so difficult about putting golden syrup in?

Mine like ready brek and own brand versions but won't eat porridge, find it too lumpy.

A lot of the brands do identical oats in the sachets and a big box. I got the sachets one on special offer, I got the big box next time but I can never get the quantities right so it doesn't overflow in micro. I did it exactly the same amounts and time as in sachets but never get it just right. Like with anything else the sachets are handy as they are pre measured and you measure the milk in the empty sachet to get the right amount.

I do real porridge in microwave and it never overflows if you stir it every 30 seconds. Takes 2 mins in total. I never understand why ppl buy the sachet stuff.

i do porridge in the slow cooker, overnight.

the DDs find it too lumpy, so I use a handblender and blitz it for them.

FAB.

I use The Oatmeal of the Alford fine milled.

I have 3 other types of oats, flakes, pinhead, etc., but I bake and cook a fair amount w/oats.

Because these people I live with, they're Jocks.

what is ready brek? ds is refusing proper oats and will only eat sachet stuff. should i just pulverise raw oats for him, won't that be revolting??

Ready Brek is good to have on hand!

If you don't want to use sugar to sweeten it, try some honey.

Also, stick some canned fruit in the blender. Keep it on hand to put into porridge, yoghurt, even a dollop at the bottom the glass w/bubbly!

i find this ridiculous
ready brek takes 30 seconds
porridge at least 10 mins and then 5 to cool down

not as nice but much quicker and easier for busy people

ooh expat porridge expert! right, what are flakes? i found alford fine milled a bit slimy, i like it more rugged.

Don't put it on high, led, or it'll be like a rock.

Try it first during the day so you can figure out exactly how much water works w/your slow cooker.

But basically, it's 1 cup pinhead oats
.5 cups raisins or dried mixed fruit, 1 tsp mixed spice or cinammon, 3 cups water and sweetner.

I use honey.

The original recipe I got called for 4 cups water, but I found that was too much for mine.

And you can always thin it w/milk.

I bake w/the fine milled stuff quite a bit. It's excellent in some northern baked goods like parkin and perkins.

I do pinhead or fine in the slow cooker.

Unless it's flapjacks, in which case I use flakes.
