I don't get "instant" porridge stuff

So the selling point of it is that you mix it with milk, bang it in the microwave, it's done...

but with proper oats you.... mix them with milk, put them in the microwave, it's done.

Am I missing something here?

My Dad has Jumbo Oats from Waitrose but they are a bit meaty for me, and take longer to cook.
I make mine with milk not water. Mmmmm. I had forgotten I used to make it with half and half.

No no no... porridge.. really stuff, only takes 2 mins in microwave. No way 10.

morningpaper · 26/01/2007 21:31

haha

I have just made myself some Ready Brek

Don't have a microwave and am allergic to milk so just pour from kettle into dish, bingo, no washing up

YUM

mummymagic · 26/01/2007 21:40

Hmmm.. don't try and make flapjacks using Ready Brek like I did during my first week of enthusiastic, New Year, I-will-be-a-domestic-goddess-SAHM...

Made delish crumble though (added loads of dried fruit yum)

morningpaper · 26/01/2007 21:40

lol @ flapjacks

wouldn't that be like making flapjacks with glue?

AeFondKiss · 26/01/2007 21:44

10 mins I am in the shower, porridge is on the hob, come out of shower porridge is ready, gorgeous, no lumps, if it is too hot to eat you know, just add a little milk, instantly cools down, delish, really there is nothing to it, I can't cook, but porridge is so easy

mornflake organic porridge is best, though I do like the bigger flakes that are a bit chewier too, oh I love porridge, it is what I look forward to every morning

morningpaper · 26/01/2007 21:46

yuck and then you have to SCRAPE the saucepan for 10 minutes with a stiff brush

wheread Ready Brek just RINSES out!

It's dreamy

ledodgy · 26/01/2007 21:47

Cheers Expat.

NotAnOtter · 26/01/2007 21:48

i do porridge in a pan - oats really vary but for babies a lot need 10 mins - then cooling

AeFondKiss · 26/01/2007 21:50

no pan scrapimg here, cold water in pot makes porridge slip out of pan

shonaspurtle · 26/01/2007 21:59

I just make it for myself, so 1 measure of oats, 1 of water, slightly less than 1 of milk and 2 mins in microwave - bing!

Would rather not have porridge than confront horrid pan tbh.

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:11

when i make skirlie, though, i use the fine-milled.

you can use pinhead, but it goes sticky, IMO.

AeFondKiss · 26/01/2007 23:16

mmm skirlie

shona I would never cook anything if I started to think like that, but I think I do love porridge, and well I don't have a microwave

you won't get much use out of your spurtle then?

I hope you all stir your porridge clockwise?

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:26

i have a lovely spurtle.

i oiled it well before using it.

i don't know if you're supposed to oil it, but it just seemed the thing to do, you know, like a cast iron pan.

OldieMum · 26/01/2007 23:52

I cook the porridge in the morning, leave the pan to soak all day and DH cleans it in the evening when he washes up. By then, the residue comes away in one big lump. Easy peasy! It's also not time consuming to make if you use the Delia Smith recipe:

Whisk frequently while it gets to boiling point, then turn down so it just bubbles occasionally, cook for 15 minutes and just give it the occasional stir while you make your child's lunch box, feed the cats etc etc. Cool it down with some milk or, better, double cream. Much better than wallpaper paste instant, IMHO. Even our 6-month old baby loves it.
