BBC website recipes

Morning,

Anybody else going to have to screen shot a lot of recipes before the BBC takes them off their website? I'd better get started!

One thing I'm a little unsure of though, does it include the BBC Goof Food website? I'm not sure it does, but if it does, I'll be staying up all night to save them!

OP posts:

oh, what?? I use the recipes ALL the time. They're a genuine public service - and how much work can it possibly be to maintain them? Does the beeb have a team of people working in a basement furiously converting imperial measurements into metric, or something? C'mon, BBC - just leave them where they are! Or rather, c'mon, Tory government - stop making the BBC cut everything...

Antidisestablishment · 17/05/2016 12:52

Just seen JustineMumsnet's post. Fingers crossed! Keep us in the loop?

slightlypeeved · 17/05/2016 12:52

NOOOOOO, rubbish. I blurdy love that site.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/05/2016 12:53

We will give it a go msrisotto! Am penning a letter to James Purnell (Head of Digital at the Beeb) as we speak

That would be awesome!

GrendelsMother23 · 17/05/2016 12:53

ARGH I can't lose BBC Food. It literally taught me how to cook as a pathetic university student, and I still lean on it when I've got ingredients from the veg box that I don't know what to do with, or a random holiday to cater for (recipes for Diwali/St George's Day/Burns Night, anyone?) Plus it has the only reliable American pancake recipe I've found in this country Grin

ICanSeeForMiles · 17/05/2016 12:53

It's a massive loss if it goes!

As an aside, can ANYONE link me to Marcus Waering's burger recipe that was a skills challenge on Mchef the professionals last series? Twas properly amazing and I deleted the recording, can't find it anywhere.

Dear James,

The announcement this morning that the BBC is to mothball its collection of 11,000 recipes following a review of its online output has triggered an outpouring of disappointment among the users of Mumsnet; here’s just one example of the discussions that have been started on the subject. We see we’re not the only ones: the story has made headlines across the media, and an online petition to save the recipes has closed in on 50,000 signatures in the few hours since the news broke.

Food is important to Mumsnet users, many of whom are responsible for feeding not just themselves, but their families. Our website already hosts its own bank of just under 3000 recipes, all of which were submitted by our users; in 2014, we published Top Bananas, a collection of some of the favourites. The recipes are an enormously popular part of our website, and we’re always on the lookout for ways in which to swell their numbers. Therefore, we’d like to offer to migrate the BBC’s recipes onto Mumsnet, where they can live alongside our own while retaining their BBC branding, and so continue to be accessed, for free, by the British public.

The BBC’s collection of recipes represents many years of thought, creativity and resource. For them to disappear forever would be a real loss; as is clear from the response to this morning’s announcement, many people rely on them on a daily basis. I hope, in the light of this, that you’ll give this serious consideration to this proposal. Do let me know what you think.

With best wishes,

Justine

Ooooh that would be wonderful if they let MN have them. Angela Hartnett's jam is fool proof!

TollgateDebs · 17/05/2016 13:01

Just a suggestion, why doesn't Mumsnet add it to their site, so what is there will survive. Members could then add favourites, via a template that Mumsnet could set up for us to fill in. Just a thought and I am sure that advertisers can fill the side banners on the pages with appropriate suggestions!

JingsAndCrivens · 17/05/2016 13:02

Hmmmm. Not sure I like the idea of them migrating to Mumsnet tbh. I like the BBC Food website as it is, a clear and easily searchable website. Mumsnet's site is still a bit too 1998.

AcademicOwl · 17/05/2016 13:02

Oh I love the idea of migrating them here...

[although it does play into moving everything into private companies, I guess]

Im just infuriated that they are doing this. It's rubbish.

TollgateDebs · 17/05/2016 13:02

Ah, crossed over with Justine's post! That's what comes of eatting lunch and surfing the web at the same time - doh.

JingsAndCrivens · 17/05/2016 13:04

We've already paid for these recipes via our license fee. They should stay where they are, not be given to a privately owned company.

gruffaloshmuffalo · 17/05/2016 13:16

Thanks Justine!

stubbornstains · 17/05/2016 13:32

How expensive can it possibly be to maintain a fairly simple website??

There was a comment by A Tory Politician (can't remember who, sorry Blush) on the radio a couple of hours ago, which was quite telling;- he was basically saying that the BBC shouldn't be competing with for- profit businesses.

LookJustCancelTheCheque · 17/05/2016 13:36

YES let's migrate them here!

It's outrageous that they're going, and I agree it really can't cost very much to maintain. I think it's largely ideological; as stubborn says above, that comment is very revealing.

squoosh · 17/05/2016 13:37

Well that's their whole reason for being, privatisation. They don't want people having access to recipes for free! Perish the thought. Not when their pal Murdoch could be making a bob or two out of it.

shinynewusername · 17/05/2016 13:41

I suspect that the Beeb never intended to close it and the announcement was a PA way of reminding the government about the level of public support for BBC activities. Good news, though.

Valentine2 · 17/05/2016 13:45

I am absolutely livid! This was the place I used to go most often to find about ingredients and lovely recipes and these arses are taking it down Angry I wonder how much money does this fucking government need to raid from our pockets? Tried to effectively privatise schools, just allowing increased tuition fees and this BBC food website now. These bastards are going to bloody CHARGE us for them recipes now I am sure . By printing it in some form or asking for a fees for subscription etc. Fuckers Angry

rumbelina · 17/05/2016 13:48

I went through all my bookmarks at 6am this morning and sent the ones I use a lot to print.

It's a shame to lose it. I don't understand why they can't leave as is but not add any more (other than the 30-day TV ones)

Asshats.

Valentine2 · 17/05/2016 13:50

Funny how I cannot get into the petition page to sign it. It keeps freezing and I can see the number of signatures increasing in every refresh I do Grin

Shiraznowplease · 17/05/2016 14:00

Thank you Justine x this is just one of the reasons I love mumsnet.

Shiraznowplease · 17/05/2016 14:02

Valentine 2 I have signed the petition through Facebook as wouldn't let me on change.org

IAmAPaleontologist · 17/05/2016 14:22

I like that letter. Failing that let's organise ourselves like the secret Santa and allocate each mner a recipe off the bbc website and we can each upload them to MN having miraculously just discovered 'an amazing recipe my kids just adore'.
