I wanted to get my DH a Nigel Slater book for Father's Day. The problem is, I don't know which one! Any recommendations, please?

Hmmm, tough one, as I really like all of them. Appetite would probably win, as it has really good variations after all the recipies which makes it much more usable. I think I actually cook most from Real Food though. And if you want something different Juice is good too. Sorry, I've been no help at all.....

Tinker · 22/05/2004 20:48

Think I prefer Real Food. Also have Appetite, which is also very good, but I think RF just edges in front.

maomao · 22/05/2004 20:58

Thanks. I guess I'm getting a little confused between "Real Food" and "Real Good Food". Oh, and also, "Nigel Slater's Real Food." Guess I'll have to drag my sorry a*se to the bookstore and actually have a look at actual books!

Still, any more recommendations/thoughts would be most appreciated!

I love Appetite, it is sort of rambling thesis on what to do with...a pork chop or variations, pasta and variations etc. Proper things you want to eat not ridiculously impossible recipes. Also a good equipment section. But I also like NS's Real Food which is the one with 8 sections on things he really loves - sausages, chicken, ice cream, chocolate, cheese and can't remember the rest. Think Appetite just has the edge for me tho.

treacletart · 22/05/2004 23:19

Appetite gets my vote too

Twink · 22/05/2004 23:53

I love them all, but 'Real Fast Food' gets my vote every time.

popsycal · 23/05/2004 10:13

i like real food - lots of good stuff and a lot of it is 'stick it in a roast tray or pan and leave it for a bit' tyoe of cooking¬!!

tweeny · 23/05/2004 18:23

appetite is my first choice too.
would avoid "toast" though - i found sniggery schoolboy sex and food an unpalatable combination!

spacemonkey · 23/05/2004 18:32

We have taken a vote and if you could only have one Real Food is the winner!

maomao · 23/05/2004 19:41

Spacemonkey, does this "we" include Garth Marenghi?

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 23/05/2004 19:42

Not you too, maomao...?

spacemonkey · 23/05/2004 19:57

maomao

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:03

Nah, I'm too slow to keep up with all of you. I just learned what CYI was yesterday....

Silly question, do you really cook from Real Food, or is it just a good read??? And if you like to cook from it, what's your fave dish?

OP posts:
popsycal · 23/05/2004 20:05

real food faves are - really easy chicken supper and the lemon chicken thingy - stick all in roasting tray and go and have a glass of wine!!

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:11

"chicken and lemon thingy" --- is that the recipe title from the book popsy? That sounds yummy, and definitely is my preferred style of cooking, tho' I'd have to forego the wine, as I can't drink! Sigh....

OP posts:
marthamoo · 23/05/2004 20:13

I still don't know what CYI is and I don't own a Nigel Slater cookbook. I feel like such a social leper

Tinker · 23/05/2004 20:14

I always do the chicken and lemony thing, always tastes good.

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:16

But MM, do you know who Garth Marenghi is? In all seriousness, marthamoo, do you not like Nigel Slater? And if so, then is there a cookbook by someone else that you'd recommend?

(According to suzywong, CYI is "check your inbox"

Tinker · 23/05/2004 20:16

Other fave NS recipe (and he does regurgitate them rather a lot, I've noticed) is the gently fried/softened apples served with sausages cooked in cider and juniper berries and a touch of cream.

popsycal · 23/05/2004 20:16

want the recipe for chicken lemon thingy??? i have the book right herre

hoxtonchick · 23/05/2004 20:21

There's a really yummy gravy recipe in one of them, & stovetop dauphinoise with pancetta & rocket both of which I cook a lot. Do you want me to go & look which book they're in? And his roast chicken ideas are good too. And the Observer recipes, but I don't think they're collected anywhere.

marthamoo · 23/05/2004 20:23

maomao, I DO know who Garth Lemon-Meringue is (I am redeemed, hoorah!). It's not that I don't like Nigel Slater, I have heard him recommended on here several times, I just don't happen to have one of his cookery books. At the moment the cookery books I am using most frequently are: 35 Years of Weight Watchers, Recipes for 5 Points and Under, Weight Watchers Complete Cookery Book!!!

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:23

ooohhhhhh I'm soooooooo huuuunnnngrrry! I want to run out and get the book right away!

Thanks, popsy, for offering to post the recipe. Wouldn't want to make you have to type a lot of stuff in though....

Okay, who can tell me what juniper berries taste like???

OP posts:
marthamoo · 23/05/2004 20:24

Juniper berries are yucky - very bitter (IMO)

popsycal · 23/05/2004 20:25

mao mao - if you remind me tonorrow i will do it...
it really is no trouble - short and sweet!
