I wanted to get my DH a Nigel Slater book for Father's Day. The problem is, I don't know which one! Any recommendations, please?

Marthamoo, what do you think of the ww books? Are the dishes tasty? (Not that I'd get one for my DH for Father's Day, but for future reference.)

Sorry, tinker, I'm sure your sausagey appley thingy is lovely (I could pick the juniper berries out).

Tinker · 23/05/2004 20:27

Well, you don't eat the juniper berries! They just subtley enhance the flavour so the sausages. If you like gin you'll like the flavour, if you don't you won't

Tinker · 23/05/2004 20:27

so = of

marthamoo · 23/05/2004 20:28

Highly recommended, maomao - good range of recipes, they work well, and are very tasty. And I've lost 18lbs

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:28

Not to hijack my own thread, but if juniper berries are very bitter, is that the only flavor they add to a dish?

Hoxtonchick, can't you just cook them for me instead? Especially the dauphinoise.... If you don't mind checking to see which book these are in, I would really appreciate it!

Oh!!! My Dad made a pasta dish with juniper berries in once and he said you ate them. Rotten sod. I couldn't believe anyone would actually enjoy them!

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:30

Mmmm..... gin.....! I love the taste of gin! Perhaps a way for me to get the flavor without the alcohol, then? Am very inspired now.

I like Real Food and Real Fast Food, though I think Real Food is a better present type book. I've cooked quite a lot from Real Food, my favourite is the citrus hot chicken thing, can't remember what it's called.

Tinker · 23/05/2004 20:33

They're quite perfumey. Crush them before adding them to things. Maybe you can eat them, I just imagine they're like cloves, don't think I'd eat those either.

Tinker · 23/05/2004 20:33

Oh, the marriage of lemon and chicken works for everyone.

popsycal · 23/05/2004 20:34

WWW - it is the lemon chickeny thing!!!

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:35

www, is the main difference between "Real Food" and "Real Fast Food" simply that "fast" aspect? (I know, I sound completely stupid.) Or would you say it's generally a difference in approach? I really should just haul myself down to the bookshop.

maomao · 23/05/2004 20:36

Well then that seals it, doesn't it popsy? Yes please, I would like the official "chicken lemon thingy" recipe. I shall feel like a true MNer indeed! I'll remind you tomorrow, if you don't mind!

dunno which book it's in, but everyone should eat Nigel's Coq au Riesling at least once in their lives. He is a god.

popsycal · 23/05/2004 21:20

maomao - do remind me and i will post it!!!
lol
shoudl we have a ;chicken lemony thing' evening?!?

ScummyMummy · 23/05/2004 21:33

Nigel is a fabbo and Real Food is def the best book- it has chapters on chicken, sausages, cheese and garlic, ffs, all with perfect, simple to use recipes oozing a passion for food verging on the greedy! What other book could compete? Cook from it all the time. I didn't like Appetite nearly as much for some reason and have barely broken the spine on it- I think it was because he was getting a bit didactic about ordering us fans to "Be spontaneous" and be true cooks without books so it's low on recipes and high on sharing his fetishes for Malden Sea Salt and the like.

maomao · 23/05/2004 21:37

Thanks for your input, scummymummy. Malden Sea Salt sounds like a spa treatment....

Can't remember which book it's in, but his roast chicken rissotto is stunning (use less creme fraiche imho)- it's got to the stage in our house where if we have a roast, his nibs gets all smiley cos he knows next day's tea will be fab !

WideWebWitch · 23/05/2004 22:09

Maomao, Real Food is full of gorgous pictures and narrative and is bigger than a normal sized paperback so therefore better for a present IMO whereas Real Fast Food has no pics and is standard paperback size. Just not as slick or attractive or glossy or foodie looking, although still a good book. It's the grilled lemongrass chicken on page 74 that I was on about btw, is that the chicken lemon thing you're all on about?!

WideWebWitch · 23/05/2004 22:09

'gorgeous' even

WideWebWitch · 23/05/2004 22:11

Actually, I really want to buy Appetite but fear it will be incompatible with the diet I intend to start tomorrow

ScummyMummy · 23/05/2004 22:13

diet, schmiet. You are gorgous/gorgeous already. You can have my copy of appetite if you want.

hoxtonchick · 23/05/2004 22:18

Anyone else tried this yet (scroll down for the recipe). Totally yummy. Don't look, www, it's blown my diet to smithereens....

WideWebWitch · 23/05/2004 22:22

Ahh, thanks Scummy, to both comments. But I must diet, a man put his hand out to shake mine on Friday (unasked) and said heartily "CONGRATULATIONS! I had no idea you were pregnant!" In front of people at work. God, it was mortifying.
