How to increase the kids intake of fruit...ideas please

Well actually my intake too as it is less than the kids.

I always buy apples and bananas and then usually something else too, grapes or strawberries or something but over the last few months no one seems to have been eating it and I end up chucking it out.

I have started offering only fruit if they are hungry between meals, sometimes they will have and sometimes they won't.

Any ideas ??

juicing it or smoothies?

twinsetandpearls · 27/12/2006 16:51

dd loves making fruit kebabs and will eat as she is putting fruit on her stick and then eat the fruit on her stick.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 16:51

Hmmm haven't got a blender thingy though.

Oh the kebabs sounds like a good idea.

Smoothies?

If they have cereals for breakfast you could add some chopped fruit.

CatBert · 27/12/2006 16:53

Smoothies. Also, smoothies can be used to mix into plain yoghurt and eaten as, or frozen into ice lollies - with or without yoghurt.

Leave the apples out within easy reach. They tend to just get consumed that way here...

Bananas are either eaten quickly or not in this house. If not - then banana cake or muffins is the thing...

twinsetandpearls · 27/12/2006 16:54

dd loves fruit on her breakfastin the morning as do I,

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 16:55

Oh never thought of adding it to cereal.
They normally have rice kripsies or cheerios, what could i add to those ??

Ds has porridge, could add banana to that perhaps.

If i give them a bowl of chopped up fruit they what can I put with that ? They don't all like cream, but I have no idea what plain or natural yoghurt tastes like, would they like it ?

do a plate of various chopped up fruit as snack in-between meals - sliced apple, banana, grapes, satsumas, kiswi etc. mine always scoff the lot in two seconds flat.

dinny · 27/12/2006 16:55

Greek yogurt with chopped fruit and little bit of honey/chopped nuts?

twinsetandpearls · 27/12/2006 16:56

dd also likes to make fruit salad which gets wolfed down very quickly.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 16:58

What does greek yoghurt taste like, have never had it

Can anyone give me a step by step instructions for fruit salad. I do know how to do it but just wanna check it's the same as everyone elses lol.

it's delicious - my two love it. sorry, not v descriptive!

fruit salad - chop up whatever fruit you have and put in container with pure OJ and stick in frige.

DimpledThighs · 27/12/2006 17:01

I find a plate of choped fruit will be eaten if popped down by them whilst playing a game or watching telly - the kind of auto pilot eat.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 17:01

This time of the year, I buy Clementines, etc., and peel, section and freeze them.

I will put two or three in a tupperware and then "reluctantly" alllow DS to have them.

You will never eat all that............

Mummy, I did it ......I ate it all... did you reallly darling......

Win/Win

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 17:03

Ahhh very good LGJ

I did buy clementines and i think they have possibly had one each.

Do you give him the segments frozen ??

((Nutty wishes she'd paid more attention during HE)))

OP posts:
SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 17:04

Yes I give them to him frozen and it really appeals to him.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 17:06

But aren't they rock hard ? How does he eat them ? Like ice cubes ??

Sorry about 101 questions.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/12/2006 17:08

The other thing that will make a real difference is if they see you eating the fruit. And the way I find to make sure I eat fruit is to just have a rule, that before I eat any junk, I have to have my fruit, which is normally 4 or 5 servings worth (a couple of apples, a couple of oranges ... or whatever else is in the house).

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 17:10

Yes they are rock hard, he gums them to death. Can't explain it, it just works for me.

Oh and I do this with grapes as well.

nutcracker · 27/12/2006 17:10

Quite right NQC and I do need to start doing that. At the mo I eat no fruit at all which obviously is a bad example to be setting.

Think I will start chopping up some fruit for them to eat on their return from school each day. Failing that I could do muffins, what do you reckon lgj ?

OP posts:
nutcracker · 27/12/2006 17:11

I'll definatly try that then.

OP posts:
dinny · 27/12/2006 17:12

yes, it must become a habit.

I never give anything other than fruit for pudding too - maybe somne yogurt with it, or ice cream a a treat.

SherlockLGJ · 27/12/2006 17:12

Blueberries or no Blueberries,....In a word....NO..
