Do any of you add other things to a jug of bisto?

I love gravy but my other half doesn't like bisto, he likes proper home made gravy with stock and peppercorns etc but I haven't got time to faff for evening meals I just want to add hot water to bisto lol. Is there anything I could add to give it a twist? Maybe Tom purée or Worcestershire sauce etc??

Cranberry sauce and red wine.

Tuiles · 03/11/2015 07:32

As vegetarians we use the powder Bisto to make up a gravy for the infrequent times we have a roast. It's OK, not going to set the world alight but infinitely better than a plate of dry roasted veg!

Shockers · 03/11/2015 07:36

No snobbery here ... I just hate the taste!

FuckyNell · 03/11/2015 07:37

'bisto snobbery'

Grin Grin Grin

I am horrified and amused in equal measures.

I'm in the I use bisto camp. FYI, you can get it in waitrose Grin

Boredofthinkingofnewnames · 03/11/2015 07:39

Not snobbery here - I hate it on it's own - it does do wonders to a shepherds pie though:)

purplewhale · 03/11/2015 07:40

I add oxo to bistro granules, it adds tons more flavour, sometimes a splash of worcs sauce too

YakTriangle · 03/11/2015 07:40

Bistro gravy made from granules is perfectly edible, add the meat juices from a roast to it like you would with proper revolting fatty floury veg floaty gravy and it is nicer.

easterlywinds · 03/11/2015 07:44

We add the meat juices after removing as much fat as possible. Occasionally a dash of wine is thrown in, or a bit of red currant jelly.

southeastastra · 03/11/2015 07:46

i like the powdered bisto added to stews, thickens it up and goes nice with dumplings and a can of scotch broth mmmmmm

southeastastra · 03/11/2015 07:47

that receipe was passed down by my mum btw who grew up in the war and was happy with powdered egg and black bananas

00100001 · 03/11/2015 07:52

I reckon the Bisto Snobs should do a blind taste test!

PennyHasNoSurname · 03/11/2015 07:58

I use Bisto too. Cannot be fucked to make a gravy from scratch so I use the water the veg has been cooked in, and add any juices from the roast (I also use the ready to roast joints from Aldi so pour the remnants from the tin tray).

Or I buy chicken bisto which needs nothing added to it - I love it!

sky1010 · 03/11/2015 08:04

I am not able to cook a roast in my bedsit, but my mum always used bisto gravy granules, an oxo cube and the juices from the meat and the veg water.

I like her gravy.

TheVeryHungryPreggo · 03/11/2015 08:08

I make both kinds of gravy depending on time/effort I can be arsed to put in - I'm an equal-opportunities-gravy-eater!

I do always put a spoon or two of hot meat juices and a splash of wine in the bisto jug. My "real" gravy often comes out a bit too salty so that takes more time and effort to correct it - maybe because I use salt/oil to crisp up the chicken skin? I never add more than one oxo cube to it but that only increases the salt level obviously.

Indecisivejo · 03/11/2015 08:15

What about if no meat juices though? I mean for things like bangers n mash? Could use Worcestershire sauce I guess and maybe water from the veg?
I always add bisto to my sheps/cottage pie or stews rather than just stick cube and water because I love it nice n thick without having to add cornflour etc I really can't see the issue but hey ho.

Roussette · 03/11/2015 08:33

My name is Roussette and I am a bisto snob!

I've never made a jug of bisto in my life! Isn't it like pouring cup-a-soup on your meal? I use bisto powder but not the granules, they look like instant coffee. What do you do with them, just add boiling water?

It doesn't take a minute to make gravy even if you haven't got meat juices, e.g. sausage and mash and you want onion gravy.

Sweat an onion in a saucepan, add a dash of balsamic vinegar or red wine. Add flour and bisto powder and veg water or just water. Add a dollop of marmite and some gravy browning if it looks a bit anaemic. Tra-la! Delicious.

ToastedOrFresh · 03/11/2015 08:42

Wildfire - you and me both. I lob the last of the mint sauce in too. Yum.

OooooohMissDiane · 03/11/2015 08:44

Yes roussette, you just add boiling water. To the granules. That look like coffee.

Fantasyland · 03/11/2015 09:19

Ok I'm going to admit I'm 35 and have no idea how to make gravy from scratch Blush

Can someone post an idiots guide to making gravy

AnyoneButAndre · 03/11/2015 10:00

Hang on Rousette. "sweat an onion in a saucepan" and "doesn't take a minute". Do you have different onions to me, or a different clock? I love onion gravy, but it's not a speedy recipe. Anything cooked to your instructions in less than five minutes would have crunchy near-raw onions.

FuckyNell · 03/11/2015 10:01

Hahahahaha this is hilarious

Palomb · 03/11/2015 10:03

There's loads of different sorts of bistro isn't there? We always use the onion gravy one mixed in with the meat juices, red wine and the run off from the veg trivet. Sometimes I add a bit of mint sauce if we are having lamb.

Palomb · 03/11/2015 10:04

Are surely bisto powder is still bisto!?

FetaComplete · 03/11/2015 10:09

I've never tried bisto or any fake gravy granule or shop made gravy. I'd imagine they are salty?

I just add flour, seasoning, mustard/wine to meat juices on the hob and whisk. Takes about a minute.

JackCuse · 03/11/2015 11:34

I'm 38 and haven't a clue how to make gravy. In fact I've no idea how to cook a roast or joint of meat - DH always does it (and he uses Tesco Granules for the gravy [sharp intake of breath] so put that in your pipe and smoke it!!)

Would like to add that I am very experimental in the kitchen and do lots of 'cooking from scratch' but I have never had the desire to roast a joint. One of these days I should learn.

Yes please tell us how to make 'proper gravy' so I can pull it out at the last minute and rain proper gravy on DH's parade.
