Am making chilli tonight - has to be with a packet of powder unfortunately. I usually add tomato, kidney beans and chick peas... what else could I do with it to make it a bit different?

meat?

the central americans put very dark chocolate in to the sauce to give a depth of flavour and smooth texture. Are you feeling brave?

onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 06/12/2006 13:21

Really?? Hmm... maybe not that brave!!

I was just going to start a thread for you actually... having trouble picking up my Dad's place in Perth on Google Earth and wasa hoping you could tell me what to type in

yellow pepper

scotch bonnet chillis

nailpolish · 06/12/2006 13:21

mushrooms

BigHotMama · 06/12/2006 13:22

I add onions and mushrooms

Frostythesurfmum · 06/12/2006 13:22

I'm making chilli tonight. As well as what you put in, I put chopped courgette and mushrooms in it, and sometimes sweetcorn too. I used to put chopped green pepper in too but dh is allergic (to the point of projectile vomiting) to those. Shame, I love peppers in it. I love huge dollops of sour cream on top too.

BigHotMama · 06/12/2006 13:22

oooh yes sour cream is a must.

nailpolish · 06/12/2006 13:22

i like it with nachos AND rice and a bit of sour cream, too

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer · 06/12/2006 13:24

Mince, garlic, onions, tinned toms, kidney beans, sweetcorn, chillis, cumin, tomatoe paste beef stock, worchester sauce, plain chocolate, red wine. Serve with sour cream, gaucamole, grated chees and rice.

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer · 06/12/2006 13:25

Oh and red peppers.

sunnywong · 06/12/2006 13:26

he'll have had a hard day in the 33 degree heat today, there was a lot of sunshine about

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 13:26

smoked paprika lovely if you have it.

onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 06/12/2006 13:27

He's in Huntingdale. Had a chat on the phone yesterday and he was gloating about the heat - don't know how you survive it!!!

sunnywong · 06/12/2006 13:28

oh yeah, we tried that before didn't we?
I don't actually have google earth on my mac at the moment

It's hot in them thar hills you know

Gingerbear · 06/12/2006 13:28

cocoa powder like the mexicans do.
cumin powder good too.
tabasco good if no real chillis only packet

nailpolish · 06/12/2006 13:29

ive always wondered what is in these packets

it seems you have to add everything that you would use to make a normal chilli

beef
veg
tinned toms

is it just powdered stock then? and seasoning?

onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 06/12/2006 13:29

Nachos and sour cream is a fab idea Have to keep it quite simple so the little ones will eat it... big crisps is bound to sway them!!

onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 06/12/2006 13:30

OP posts:
onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 06/12/2006 13:31

NP yes it's just seasoning that you fry the mince in to flavour it then add all the rest... cheating really!!

OP posts:
nailpolish · 06/12/2006 13:32

zeph you dont need the packet babes

just make it yersel with all the ingredients and add some dried herbs

sunnywong · 06/12/2006 13:33

hello GB? Have you had that baby yet?

Huntingdale isn't really Woop-Woop, I wonder why it won't go on?

Maybe he's making it all up and he really live is in Accapulco

yes it is seeringly hot, and I am sick of having milky white thighs so I spent 20 minutes lying on the back lawn with no skirt on this lunchtime so melanoma here I come

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer · 06/12/2006 13:34

If you don't use chocolate, put in a little sugar to enhance the tomatoes, and (I know this sounds weird) add some finely chopped anchovies (I do this with spag bol too).

onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 06/12/2006 13:34

Got a cupboard full of dried herbs so that's easy enough! What do you spice it with? (Needs to be mild for the kids..wimps!)
