fireflyxmasfairylights2 · 04/12/2006 22:23

OOh I heard someone talking about that behind me in Tesco on Thursday!!! is there a recipe for it please???

PanicPants · 04/12/2006 22:24

Ooh, I've always wanted to try that - it's a nigella recipe isn't it?

So it's worth giving it ago then?

Heathcliffscathy · 04/12/2006 22:28

it is fantastic is it not

Carmenere · 04/12/2006 22:31

We used to do ribs baked in cola in a restaurant I worked in about 10 years ago, I think it is quite popular in the states but Nigella is responsible for popularising it over here.

HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel · 04/12/2006 22:42

Yes, it was Nigella's recipe, and it was fab!
Would like to do it for my parents when they visit, but fear it t'would not be good for my diabetic father.

Will try ribs next!

firefly, I just googled 'ham in cola' and Nigella's recipe came up.

My Mum made it today too - the whole family are becoming obsessed with fizzy pig!

brilliant, Humph. i am making it for christmas day (and sandwiches, lord knows, the most important thing of all). what of the stock, though? did you discard it?
someone said something on the other thread about using it for red cabbage. made Delia's quick stir-fried red cabbage with apple the other day, also cannot recommend too highly. (although i left out the vinegar and sugar as it was ovekill imho.)

HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel · 06/12/2006 23:52

Hi Aitch - glad you saw this thread eventually.
Was going to hurdle the interweb and staple it to your forehead if you didn't see it this time!

I kept the stock because someone (you, I think?) said I should - then I couldn't remember what I was supposed to do with it, and threw it away yesterday!

My Mum does the cabbage and apple recipe, so maybe we should try that.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion - the ham was a BIG success.

It is a fantastic recipe. I have the in-laws coming in a few weeks and think I'll make it for them.

I kept the stock the last time and tried to make the South Beach soup that is in Nigella Bites. Thought it was a bit bleurgh personally but IIRC I didn't use the right beans.

whensantagotstuckupAITCHimney · 06/12/2006 23:55

i wonder if that was the soup i made, mrsspoon? i thought it was rancido domingo... bleurgh. but someone else mentioned doing red cabbage with it and i can see the sense in that.

whensantagotstuckupAITCHimney · 06/12/2006 23:56

and was it my suggestion, humph? how marvellous. did think nigella's camera flirting had gone a bit panto in the christmas edition, did you see it?

HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel · 06/12/2006 23:58

DH thinks she should just get a 'cleavage cam' and be done with it!

MrsSpoon · 06/12/2006 23:59

Also rather embarrasingly I had a friend in the house that day, the same friend who had been round at the house when we had the ham and I felt I should offer him the soup as it seemed rude to sit and eat it in front of him. He made loads of comments, saying how nice it was etc when it was clearly boggin'.

expatinscotland · 07/12/2006 00:00

Am I the only one who found her Xmas special tonight poncey, especially that bit w/her in the Alps?

[rolls eyes]

In one episode of her domestic goddess series, she prattled on and on about how she's not much of a drinker.

Yet she's necking down every single time she's on TV.

I never believe people who say that. They're usually blowing sunshine up their arse, too.

HumphreyCushiONtheFirstNoel · 07/12/2006 00:01

Ahhh, a true friend indeed, MrsSpoon!

OP posts:
whensantagotstuckupAITCHimney · 07/12/2006 00:07

i doubt you are the only person, expat, i thought it was ponce-issimo. especially the last bit when she 'snuck' down for some more cake. i also thought her eyes rolled most oddly a couple of times, as if one of them wasn't attached properly.

MrsSpoon · 07/12/2006 00:09

LOL! It was vile, poor bloke. On the plus side at least he tasted the ham first and knew that was good.

I didn't see Nigella tonight, was swayed by the 10 Years Younger programme with the woman whose beauty routine included bleach and Jif, fancinating.

expatinscotland · 07/12/2006 00:09

All that poncey ass mulled wine, the salmon, the glaze for the ham.

Cut to Dean & Deluca cocoa powder.

'I just LOVE a good gluwein'. Yeah, me, too, except I can't be arsed stumping up 20 quid to make it at home when I can nip down the Mound on my lunch hour and neck it down at the German Market for £1.50/cup.

expatinscotland · 07/12/2006 00:11

I did notice, Aitch, that she uses a lot of Lakeland products.

Ooooo, I was just in there yesterday, to discover the product of my fantasies, 'spa lights', is sold out till 12 December .

I've also discovered that I do not know Scottish nursery songs after taking DD1 to see 'The Singing Kettle' and having her goad, 'C'mon, Mummy, sing along!' So I sang, 'Lalala, lalala, Mama's foreign and you are not . . .'
