Is there a September cook book club? I have had a look but I wasn't sure if I just wasn't looking properly.

I'm still here! :)

Not managed to cook anything new in the past few days, hoping to on Wednesday - determined to do the beetroot/lentil/salsa verde!

Haywire · 05/10/2015 14:04

Me too! am planning the beetroot and Radicchio gratin from MWTC tomorrow. Will report back.

Kefybaby · 05/10/2015 17:36

I bought beetroot with a recipe in mind too. Now I can't remember which one it was Blush...

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 05/10/2015 18:57

Not technically relevant to this thread but I think you might like it - I made a new beetroot hummus today and it's my favourite yet.

Roast beetroots, blitz with chickpeas, cumin, olive oil, salt pepper and juice of a lime. It's so easy and delicious. You're meant to add orange zest but I didn't...

Kefybaby · 06/10/2015 18:25

This sounds tasty and quick! Thanks, salted.

PenelopeClearwater · 07/10/2015 13:03

I have finally made something!!

I had the Huevos Rancheros from 'a modern way to eat' and it was really good.

I'm going back a few months now but did anyone make the daily dal from Made in India? It looks really nice and I want to give it a go but I'm not sure if the kids will eat it.

HuevosRancheros · 07/10/2015 14:51

Yay, well done :)

I've done the daily dal, and love it.
Personally I don't put the cloves in as I found the flavour too strong. I do use the peppercorns, but it is a faff picking them out at the end, I honestly think a grind of pepper would do a good enough job.

glorious · 07/10/2015 16:49

I adore the chana dal from Made in India if you aren't set on the daily dal.

PenelopeClearwater · 07/10/2015 17:14

I rang the library today and I'm 9th in the queue for the Jamie Oliver book. Might just buy it.

agree Both Dal from Made in India are really good. I might make the lamb Biryani tomorrow as have people coming for dinner. Anyhoo back to Anna J.
Made the lemon crispy rice dish a pilaf with a crispy bottom! pros: lovely flavour liked the nuts etc. negs: I burnt my pan [crisping] the rice At the end, filled kitchen with smoke ahem. In my defence I was distracted by dd's picture appearing on the blue peter badge wall. Still left burnt bit in pan and rest was delish.
Still planning on beetroot gratin at some point but might make Kale nachos tonight as they were a good Friday night tea.

yumyumpoppycat · 12/10/2015 14:16

Hi can I join in please, have reserved MWT/E/C books. Jamie doesn't seem to be available at my library. I had some Ottelenghi's from the library recently and made a couple of recipes which were a success.

Is it ok to write about other recipes from current books occasionally or is it just the ones mentioned?

yumyumpoppycat · 12/10/2015 14:21

Very tempted to buy NOPI now gah - defo going to be expensive!

PancakeHen · 12/10/2015 15:35

I'm going to read the thread later but I just saw it in active so place marking quickly before I lose it again!! I have done cookery book thread before but not very often and not for a while!

glorious · 12/10/2015 19:34

Yes everyone's welcome and we sometimes go a bit off topic on other recipes Grin

I have done a few which I need to write up...

Haywire · 12/10/2015 19:44

Kale nachos - from MWTC are yum third time of making. Especially Cashew cream which I was dubious about before I tried it.

Chocolate Goodness cookies from MWTC - not sure what to think of these, lovely chocolate flavour but not cookie enough texture for me; however could not taste the mystery ingredient (a tin of black beans!) and my fussy kids loved them.

Off topic made the Biryani from Made in India at weekend - it's a knockout guests loved it.

Kefybaby · 12/10/2015 21:44

I'll have to buy Made in India now, won't I?! Grin

glorious · 12/10/2015 21:56

You won't regret made in india...

I liked those cookies a lot but totally agree on texture. I'm mad about beans in sweet stuff though so enjoyed the bean texture for itself instead.

Haywire · 12/10/2015 22:29

Made in India is a gift that keeps on giving......

Glorious think part of the problem was my brain saying but they are going to taste of beans, even though they didn't. They were a bit floppy maybe needed longer in oven.

glorious · 13/10/2015 07:48

Yeah I think I did them for longer actually but our oven is unreliable so I never know whether it's the recipe or the oven. Tasting of beans is no bad thing in my book bit there is way too much chocolate for that isn't there (also no bad thing) Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 13/10/2015 13:29

I wasn't really interested in made in india but all the positive comments on here means its now added to my library list! I will have to be careful as I have wracked up about £15 in fines this year but worth it when the books are £10 or more each I think. Amazingly Nopi was at my library today so collected it...excited to open it and have a read but it would have to be the one book not properly on the list Hmm

hooliodancer · 13/10/2015 19:07

I have cooked the crispy sea bass with asparagus and pea mash from the Jamie Oliver book. It was really amazing, restaurant quality and only 425 calories! I will make the mash with other vegetables and have it with other things. I would never have thought of putting vegetables other than other roots in mash, so this is a new idea for me.

I made the granola dust. It is nice, but I think I prefer the different textures in a normal granola.

Tonight we are doing the fish curry, so I will report back!

Would I need the Anna Jones book as well as this one? How do they compare?

0ldHag · 14/10/2015 10:46

Hoolio Most obvious difference between the Jamie and the Anna Jones is that Jamie uses meat. Other than that, my take is that the Jamie recipes have been specially designed to be low fat and nutritious whereas the Anna ones were designed with taste in mind first but happen to be nutritious because they are mainly vegetable/grain based. Not that it will mean much, but my kids are far more likely to eat a Jamie offering than an Anna meal - I think they are less aware how much veg is involved!!

This week I've experimented with the chicken cacciatore from Jamie, which was easy and well received (at least till my dad innocently enquired what the cubes of squash were, at which point the DDs only ate on sufferance). DH and I had the courgette and pistachio polpettine (from MWTE) for our dinner last night, which was delicious but really deserved to be eaten on a sun baked patio rather than in a lounge being centrally heated for the first time this Autumn! It was quite a faff to make but there is plenty left to go in the freezer, so I guess that's a nice easy meal in the next month or so. We've got the walnut/cumin muhamma [Anna again] for lunch to use up some aged red peppers from the fridge, which is such a glorious colour I am really looking forward to it. That wasn't really much more hassle to make than a hummus, so here's hoping it tastes as good as it looks/smells.

hooliodancer · 14/10/2015 11:41

Ah, that's interesting, thanks. I am trying to lose weight, so will stick with Jamie... I have SO many recipe books, I try not to buy them so often. I bought Rick Steins new book though...

The curried fish stew from Jamie was delicious! We put a salmon fillet in which I thought added something. The flavour was really very good, it reminded me of Goan fish curry.

I made Jamie's skinny hummus. My partner likes it better than my usual recipe, but I miss the Tahiti.

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 15/10/2015 20:26

Hello! I've not joined these threads before, although I've meant to. I'm rather envious of all of you, getting your act together to try lots of new recipes every month!
I've got a Modern Way to Eat, so thought I'd share my views.

I made mac and greens a few weeks ago (a pasta bake recipe, with a sort of crumble-esque topping) - I REALLY liked the topping but the sauce around the pasta didn't wow me. I made it again at the weekend, but increased it by half as had a lot of people to feed. This time I used a normal tomato/veg pasta sauce that I made up but it really didn't work - the pasta was overcooked. And I didn't have enough basil in the topping. Disappointing - I really like the topping so need to work out how to do it with a tasty pasta sauce and non-soggy pasta.

I also made the dhal with sweet potato and coconut chutney, but left out the chilli due to children/fussy adults (I LOVE chilli though). I thought it was ok but nothing exciting - this may be due to the lack of chilli though! And I have a feeling I did the sweet potato wrong as it seemed a bit dry.

I really want to try to dosa-spiced potato cakes and the cauliflower pizza (not that others would eat it with me, but anyway...) and the mushroom biryani others that I probably won't get around to. I'm not a fan of cloves or cinnamon though so might swap them for cumin - unless anyone has a better idea?

glorious · 16/10/2015 23:32

Welcome! You won't envy our cookbook expenditure Blush

I did the MWTC sweet potato quesadillas today. Another recipe which made me thankful for my food processor! They were very easy and tasty and I didn't miss the cheese. I'm not sure the maple syrup is actually necessary and would miss it out next time. They are nothing special but made a nice change and I'm a sicker for pulses so the crushed beans were a winner.

Lots more planned next week including the mac and greens (oops!) and courgette polpette and another lot of kale nachos. Mmmm.
