Is there a September cook book club? I have had a look but I wasn't sure if I just wasn't looking properly.

OP posts:

Jamie's skinny carbonara made. Added cream Blush, it was okay. But it needed a boost.
I'm with another comment regarding it being harder to organise a meal during the week. I've got an afternoon on Thursday so will try something else then.

glorious · 22/09/2015 17:32

Mmm I might have to make science's mum's curry Smile [waves to science]

I should think adding cream would help stellar! Grin It's the kind of thing I'd do...

Cookingongas · 22/09/2015 18:31

I made Jamie's chickpea, chorizo and kale ( I used spinach) stew thing this evening. It was a big hit. Dc and dh loved it and it really hit the mark on quick( half hour start to finish) autumnal, flavourful and nutritious -which is what I was after. Not the prettiest meal but one I'll make again.

Cookingongas · 22/09/2015 18:31

Like I said - hardly pretty, but really tasty

Cookingongas, I might give this a go. I like the sound of it and have some kale that needs using up.

I made the mildly spiced sweet potato and quinoa dish from MWTC yesterday. There were a few substitutions Blush but I liked it a lot. I will make it again and use a few more spices to give a bit more of a kick.

Cookingongas · 22/09/2015 19:41

Kefy- I've made more than I've posted but because I am too cowardly to admit to some of my substitutions. Jamie's toast with pancetta, spinach, tomato and mushrooms was lovely- but I had no pancetta so used smoked salmon instead. Blush
mwte lime tortilla with crunch salad - another very nice lunch ( and faster than you think) but having substituted coriander for parsley, cherry tomatoes with vine tomatoes, etc etc I didn't post my recommendation as I wasn't sure it was 'authentic' Hmm

glorious · 22/09/2015 19:45

Nobody is going to tell you off for making substitutions Smile they might be tastier

That 'kale' chorizo and click pea looks good. Might try lime tortilla with crunch salad, too.

glorious · 22/09/2015 19:46

*chick pea. Click pea sounds like some online thing!

HuevosRancheros · 22/09/2015 20:08

Thanks Science, I'll give the curry a go :)
I still have tamarind paste in the freezer from our Made in India phase, so I could add some if needed :)

Stellar you did make me laugh, making a skinny carbonara and adding cream Grin

Cooking you have to share even if you tweak the recipe, you know the rules Wink

As for me, I looked at the recipe I had planned and realised the beets needed an hour in the oven, time I did not have.
So instead I had Fuchsia Dunlop's emergency midnight noodles from egor. You couldn't get a more diametrically opposed meal to Anna Jones' food - greasy carbs topped with a fried egg - but hey, can't be healthy all the time Grin
It was lovely, as usual, and so very quick.

Cookingongas · 23/09/2015 20:54

Anna jones crunchy sweet potato chips tonight and chipotle ketchup. ( with a slow cooked gammon in ginger beer) another hit. Very moreish and complimented by the ketchup. Another recipe I'll be repeating Smile

Cookingongas · 23/09/2015 20:55

Ps I caved and bought modern way to cook

glorious · 23/09/2015 21:00

Mmmm that sounds lovely. On my list.

HuevosRancheros · 23/09/2015 21:26

Grin at the caving, knew you would I'll be next

I fancied those chips to use up my remaining sweet potatoes, but I didn't have any polenta in... I shall get some and make them, thanks for the recommendation :)

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 24/09/2015 09:59

I also made Jamie's carbonara and I added extra bacon - it needed something - otherwise I liked it.

I love the sweet potato chips from MWTE which I've made a lot now. I also like the sweet potato dhal.

I think I might try the roasted courgettes and chickpeas from MWTC later...

Kefybaby · 24/09/2015 19:43

Your help, please! I am making the proper chilli from a MWTE for some friends. What else can I make (starter or side dish)?

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 24/09/2015 21:44

I always make guacamole with chilli. And I also like sour cream cut through with lime.

I never do starters so this might be unhelpful but I do like to cut tortilla wraps into slices and toast in the oven so they are like crisps. I usually serve with dips - normally hummus type but you will have bean overload from the chilli - chunky tomato salsa, spiked up a bit with chilli maybe? Or a ceviche type starter if people eat fish?

Kefybaby · 24/09/2015 21:50

Brilliant ideas, salted! Thanks so much!

ScienceRocks · 25/09/2015 13:56

Made the steak with jewelled tabbouleh rice from Jamie's Superfood, though I used proper peppers instead of the jarred ones. I was underwhelmed to start (I thought the steak could do with some harissa) but then the flavours kind of built and I ended up quite liking it.

I'm trying the chicken cacciatore tonight.

Cookingongas · 25/09/2015 14:51

Ooh I fancied the chicken cacciatore- it's nice to have someone guinea pig the recipe for meWink

I've been pouring over mwtc. It's just as ( maybe more so) good as the last. Not a buy I regret.

Pantah630 · 25/09/2015 15:31

Thank you cooking big, big pot of chicken, cauliflower and pea curry made, and a smaller scale cauliflower one. All loaded and off to Brownsea. Will join in with mwtc when I'm back in the land of the adult next week. Not looked at the new Jamie, I have far too many books please stop tempting me knows it'll have dropped in my basket by end of September Grin

0ldHag · 25/09/2015 21:40

Huevos the lentil/beets/salsa thing was good, though mine would have benefitted from a much more generous serving of the salsa as I was using the dregs of packets that were about to die in the fridge

I gave in and bought the Jamie book (weak willed, moi?) and had the unprecedented success of youngest DD asking for breakfast seconds of his popovers (obviously sanitised of any chilli heat - she's fussy!) They were so easy that they even made an appearance on a school morning and will definitely be repeated.

HuevosRancheros · 25/09/2015 21:50

I almost made the beet/lentil thing today, but again, ran out of time.. next week maybe.. Hopefully.

Dumb question - what's a popover? (don't have the book. Don't want or need the book. must not get the book ) Grin

Cookingongas · 25/09/2015 21:52

I made the avacado olive and tahini flatbreads from mwtc - as expected they were beautiful. Me and dc loved them- so quick and easy ( and it gets avacado into dc- which is no mean feat)

0ldHag · 25/09/2015 22:27

A popover seems to be a mix of cottage cheese, egg, flour and bits of meat/veg (Saint Jamie uses mushroom, tomato and ham but I catered to my audience/fridge by using sweet corn, spring onion and salami) which is then fried with grated Parmesan on top. So not a dumb question as I suspect it's title emanated from Jamie/ his ghostwriter's mind!

I am trying to remain strong and resist buying the new Anna Jones prinicipally because I have dropped lots of hints that's what I'd like for my now imminent birthday

0ldHag · 25/09/2015 22:28

Strike through fail there, sorry!
