dd2 is starting school so I no lo ger have the leaving early for nursery excuse to keep hold of the breakfast cereals they generally eat well so I could cope with the "box of shit" idea up til now Wink

however now I will have slightly more time in the mornings I would like to start making more effort with breakfast

I already have eggs down but dd2 wont eat them. We are working in on letter though so hopefully she will start to.

She also isn't keen on.porridge Hmm

although I'm hoping that once there's little choice in the matter she will cave. and she did at one point eat almond porridge. I plan to toast nuts and maybe use the slow cooker to make fruit comps to liven it up a bit.

so besides porridge, eggs, and breakfast sundaes with yogurt and home made granola and waffle/pancakes I'm a bit stumped.

so any ideas gratefully received. oh and preferably dairy free

Beans on toast
Continental breakfast- cold meat, cheese, bread etc.
homemade pancakes and fruit go down well here.
Breakfast muffins that you could bake in advance and freeze.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 13:53

Why hadn't I thought of beans on toast Confused

wonder if I could attempt to make my own in the slow cooker....

Eggy bread always goes down well, probably second only to home made banana pancakes.

4merlyknownasSHD · 18/08/2015 14:14

Why are you ditching cereals? You don't need to give in to demands for Frosties or Coco-Pops or any of the other sugar coated varieties, just the standard non-coated ones like Weetabix, Corn Flakes, Bran Flakes, Rice Krispies. OK, I know that they, too, have sugar and salt in (just like baked beans and some of the other alternatives), but at least they are a way of getting milk in to them, and IMO that is important for bone growth and strength.

I'm ditching them because dd1 is starving way before lunch time and by the time she gets to go for lunch she's past being hungry and barely touches lunch. She used to be ok but she's wanting bigger and bigger bowls and it's not lasting.

when she has boiled eggs or scrambled eggs fir breakfast she eats her lunch.

this morning they had waffles, with only a small drizzle of honey and some berries and despite being stuck in house all morning as I have a ton of washing to do, they haven't tried to kill each other or moan they are hungry Grin

we never have frosties or that kinda stuff anyway but even the ones we do have minus the shredded wheat are still not great.

We don't have cows milk anyway

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 14:37

savoury flapjack?

never heard of that. what are they Smile

atticusclaw · 18/08/2015 14:45

Lots of children will leave most of the milk from a bowl of cereal anyway and so there are better ways of getting milk into them

OP I'd put "breakfast ideas" into pinterest and you'll get tons of ideas.

We try to give the DS's a fairly large protein filled breakfast to keep them going. As well as the suggestions above we have:

chicken and bacon wraps
chicken and feta wraps
sausage and egg wraps
cheese and ham toasties
mini bread and butter puddings (containing raisins) made in muffin cases

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 14:55

mini bread and butter puddings? loving that idea.

Have you not thought of cereal and egg? That is what I grew up with. Cereal, boiled egg and toast. We always ate school lunches. We exercised lots as kids (and since) so never got overweight, certainly not as kids (BMI a touch high now).
As for not finishing the milk from a bowl of cereal, don't put as much in. I am all for helping the farmers out, but wasting food is "verboten" in our house.

I am not really part of the "Food Gestapo".

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 16:19

The whole point of ditching the cereal is to stop having to give multiple courses at breakfast.

and stopping when full is hardly "waste" as I said we don't have cows milk anyway. can't stand the stuff

Can't help much (we're dairy and egg free due to allergies, so breakfast is a nightmare).... but, on the porridgw front: both DD's developed a taste for porridge when I let them choose what to put in it - when I'm not working I'll give them a plate of banana, berries etc, and let them add them to the porridge. Goes down much better that way

Although DD1 now won't eat porridge at home any more since she had Grandad's porridge, which is apparently much better. Thanks for that Dad

Look at Paleo breakfasts for ideas. (Deliciously Ela, Helmsley and Helmsley and Paleo Mom)

We don't have grains, dairy or sugar so here are a few of our breakfasts.

Spanish style tortillas in lots of varieties, spinach, chicken, peppers, green beans, with potatoes, cannellini beans. (I have two who don't like eggs on their own but eat these.)

Bircher muesli made with cashew nut milk and chia seeds instead of yogurt, berries, chopped up fruit left over night.

Banana bread made with freshly ground almonds (taste difference is incredible!), bananas, raisins, eggs and coconut oil.

Sausages in pancakes made with rice flour and lots of eggs.

Berries in pancakes made with bananas.

I have avocado with almond or cashew nut butter but the kids are not keen!

We also sometimes have rice pasta for breakfast.

I am still searching for the perfect breakfast muffin but so far have failed on that!

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 16:40

great I would love that nut and and oat muffin recipe if that is possible please.

and another would live the banana bread one too.

paleo breakfasts - will Google.

Thanks Smile

so besides porridge, eggs, and breakfast sundaes with yogurt and home made granola and waffle/pancakes I'm a bit stumped.

Why isn't that enough options? Confused

FWIW, mine also have fried bread (they like it fried in butter but you could have fried in egg, with ketchup), tortillas, orange+banana, tea-cakes, muffins. I eat things like peanut butter, cashews, soup, curry or hummus myself.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 16:43

ordinarily it would be but dd2 isn't keen on eggs so half the options are gone with her Grin

ditto porridge.

and it's always move to mix it up a bit

OP posts:
poocatcherchampion · 18/08/2015 16:47

Eggy bread is quite a good way of serving egg if they don't love it.

We think it is delish!

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 16:51

Oh she likes french toast Hmm

I do sometimes do that.

dd1 didn't eat scrambled egg till she was 4/5 so hopefully it will change soon Grin

Lurkedforever1 · 18/08/2015 16:52

Dd has never ate cereals, she loves good cheese but otherwise hates dairy, including the alternatives those with allergies use.
Apart from granola, which she'll eat dry, we just have lunch type stuff. So toasties, sandwiches, crumpets, breakfast muffins, proper potato cakes, leftover dinner from the night before, ploughmans lunch, quiche etc. I don't bother including any fruit as she empties the bowl in a day helps herself.

GummyBunting · 18/08/2015 16:54

Overnight oats (apple and cinnamon is a fave)

Banana and egg pancakes

Banana and oat flapjack (cooked in microwave. Super easy. Add frozen berries for extra fancyness)

DinosaursRoar · 18/08/2015 17:00

Are we not doing bacon sarnies?

Eggy bread (without any sugar or sweet stuff with it) is lovely with bacon or sausages for a filling breaky.

Grilled tomatoes on toast

mushrooms quickly fried in butter and a bit of garlic puree is lush on toast, or going bread free, with grilled tomatoes and bacon.

I'm trying to get away from sweet stuff at breakfast.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/08/2015 17:11

bacon sarnies go without saying WinkGrin
