I have to do it at Iceland too as I need it delivered.

I don't think I need any non food stuff, well nothing that can't wait anyway.

Cupboards are already pretty bare so need 6 days worth of meals, can that even be done ?

cheap meals...

spag bol
stew
macaroni cheese
pasta bake

Lucycat · 22/11/2006 11:15

ooh you need the Miaous!

They have reasonably priced turkeys/chickens that would do at leasy a couple of days.

Frozen sweetcorn/peas/rice - yes rice! are good staples.

Do you need non frozen stuff too?

I'll have a think and get back to you.

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:16

Ta all of them are good except for macaroni cheese as the kids hate it and i'm not keen either.

Regarding the stews, my slow cooker is broken, so how do i do one with really cheap meat that won't be as tough as boots ??

munz · 22/11/2006 11:16

bangers/mash.
lentil soup.

Lizzylou · 22/11/2006 11:17

Homemade Soup (carrots are cheap and add lots of dried herbs)
Jacket potatoes
Beans on toast
stock up on bread....fills you up

nailpolish · 22/11/2006 11:18

if you ahve cheaper meat then just casserole for longer ie 3 hrs

use a teaspoon of marmite in hot water for stock

add cornflour at the end of its too watery

marmite stock
meat (ie pork)
carrotts
potatoes

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:18

Tbh i need pretty much everything food wise, didn't realise how run down the copboards were.

Will need cereal for kids too, actually will get packet of porridge and then some marmalade as the kids don't mind having toast then.

Also need fruit but will get that from fruit and veg shop as it's cheaper and they also have yoghurts and stuff that are near sell by date.

Can you get fresh fruit and veg at Iceland? I've never been to one.

Lizzylou · 22/11/2006 11:19

RE: stews in oven, just cook on low for as long as possible, that'll make meat more tender, as does bashing it a bit with a rolling pin (meat in bag or v messy!)

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:19

I'll try it naily. What sort of temp would it go on for 3 hours ?

OP posts:
Miaou · 22/11/2006 11:20

ah - x-posts.

MrMiaou is on the phone just now - will ask him for advice when he is finished.

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:20

You can Miaou but it is pricey so i'll get that from fruit and veg shop or aldi.

I have to spend £25 in iceland though to get the free delivery......arse.

You could do a sausage casserole and easily make one pack of sausages last two days. I would add tinned tomatoes, and a tin of baked beans or kidney beans plus lots of veg - onions, carrots, swede, mushrooms etc. And some seasoning/herbs of course. Could you buy frozen veg if you need to get up to £25 on Iceland?

zephyrcat · 22/11/2006 11:27

Spag bol, jacket potatoes/tuna/beans/cheese, chilli, forzen breaded/battered fish, frozen corn on cob, steak and kidney pie/mash/veg...

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:29

Yeah i will get frozen veg else i'll never get up to £25.
Here's hoping they have some decent bogof's for once and not just crap

OP posts:
munz · 22/11/2006 11:30

cottage pie - use little meat and add baked beans sweetcorn carrots?

nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:30

Oh you've just reminded me Zeph, I do have some frozen corn on the cob, found them at the back yesterday.

Have some frozen bread rolls too, so I can use them with some soup or casserole.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:30

Have never added baked beans to anything like that, does it taste nice then ?

OP posts:
nutcracker · 22/11/2006 11:31

OP posts:
munz · 22/11/2006 11:32
