An interesting way to make sandwiches for toddlers.

I visited my sister the other day with dts, and for lunch she made sandwiches in a different way,
She cut the crusts off the bread, rolled out the bread with a rolling pin, put the filling on, and then rolled it so it looked like a wrap, the dts loved them, just thought I would pass on the idea, though I expect its not that unusual, as I am often the last to learn these things

I'll be trying that with my dd1 - thanks for the tip!

Fattymumma · 18/11/2006 09:41

very clever.

MoreTeaAnyone · 18/11/2006 09:42

Excellent that's lunch sorted!

aDadOnMumsnet · 18/11/2006 09:44

I thought you were going to say: "try making them with your feet and not your hands" or something

sounds like a useful tip though

We use cookie cutters to make dd's sandwichs into shapes.

lornaloo · 18/11/2006 10:30

I just tried it with ds. He ate the whole thing. Thats never happend before. Good tip .

McDreamy · 18/11/2006 10:31

Thanks for that - guess what we're going to have for lunch! I've heard of the cookie cuuter approach but never used it as I thought there would be too much wasted bread.

edam · 18/11/2006 10:42

Oooh nice idea, thanks.

sandcastles · 18/11/2006 10:42

Mcdreamy, we use play dough cutters. Wee make her play dough so it's just normal ingredients.

They are tiny, so get about 6 out of the sandwich, only waste the crusts, which got to the birds!

totaleclipse · 18/11/2006 11:16

bump as the idea seems to be going down well

I used to do that Totaleclipse, only I used to slice them to make pinwheels. Great with avocado/primula, taramasalata ('pink spread'), pear&apple spread with grated cheese.

themaskedposter · 20/11/2006 15:35

I have done the pinwheels (2 pieces of bread rolled out 'stuck' together) and they go down a treat - but will have to try the 'wrap' style - sounds good! Thanks

judemum · 20/11/2006 16:23

can someone just explain how to make a pinwheel? I have a toddler who gets v bored with his sandwiches, so all new and interesting ideas will be greatfully received!

orangecake · 20/11/2006 16:27

Jude, you make them following the OP's original instructions and then cutting the sausage shaped sandwich into slices (maybe a cm thivk?) they look like swiss roll slices - very pretty!

Twiglett · 20/11/2006 16:28

would it not be easier to .. and I hesitate to suggest this .. use a wrap?

Twiglett · 20/11/2006 16:29

I disagree with making food into smiley faces / funny shapes tbh ... food is food .. toys is toys .. and ne'er the twain shall meet

judemum · 20/11/2006 16:43

Thanks Orange. Sort of agree Twiglett- DS1 is not a bad eater, but s'pose its good to vary the monotony for him sometimes, although will probably never get round to doing these pinwheel/wraps things anwyay!

Twiglett · 20/11/2006 16:45

food isn't monotonous .. its gloriously different every meal

Whooooosh · 20/11/2006 16:52

I'm with Twig and I am such a bad Mummy I make my dd eat her crusts

"would it not be easier to .. and I hesitate to suggest this .. use a wrap?"

Life's too short to roll a slice of bread

themaskedposter · 21/11/2006 08:52

Although I agree with twiglett - I am also one for variety. Nothing wrong with making pinwheel sandwiches now and then and having dd say - 'oooh - swirly-whirleys' in an impressed tone. Now gonna make the wrap stylee sandwich and await with anticipation the accolades that will come my way .... or not!

FrannyandZooey · 21/11/2006 08:57

I don't like smiley face type meals but I do make pinwheel sandwiches sometimes for a change. I personally appreciate nice presentation of my food - it isn't purely about nutrition, is it? and I assume children are the same

Mum2FunkyDude · 21/11/2006 09:06

It sounds like some people live to eat and some eat to live

I'm too unimaginative when it comes to food, I don't even know how to get my ds to move from mashed veg to chewing cut up pieces and he'll be 1 on Friday!
