I have someone coming to my house who I would like to cook something nice for. She is arty London hipster type. I'm sure she wouldn't complain if I gave her pizza and chips but would like something a wee bit more fancy dancey. Although not trying too hard cos that would be weird. Any nice suggestions please?

Arty London hipsters I know live on market stall food - either picnic style artisan bread, good cheese and sausage, olives, salad and fruit, or stuff like Vietnamese or thai street food - little bowls of curries etc.

You could make Thai green curry with ginger, lemongrass and lime, coconut milk and crunchy veg like baby corn, mange tout and slivers of red pepper.

Is she veggie/vegan/no gluten etc?

If I wasn't sure what someone liked I might do dauphinoise potatoes, salad, and perhaps chicken breasts, e.g. Topped with mushrooms/ham/cheese or similar.
Might make a yummy pudding, glass of cava.

But I don't know any arty London hipster types, I kind of hope if someone likes me enough to come for food, they won't care if it is a baked potato (!)

onepieceoflollipop · 17/03/2015 19:54

Moussaka is also yummy IMO.

iklboo · 17/03/2015 19:55

Lemon & herb chicken skewers with pitta bread and homemade tzatziki. Easy but looks poncey.

LineRunner · 17/03/2015 19:56

Heinz tomato soup and a vat of Finnish vodka.

Madamecastafiore · 17/03/2015 19:58

Oooohhh nice breads, olives, cured meats and cubes of Parmesan. Maybe a slice of terrine too.

I'm not a hipster but I am v v hungry.

SconessMcFloness · 17/03/2015 20:03

We have a hipster visiting this weekend, we're doing Ottolenghi's lamb shawarma with pitta - homemade if I have the energy, with salad bits, yoghurt sauce, Harissa...maybe humous. She is bringing amazing cheese so we'll get crackers. Will also do a homemade shortbread and rhubarb layered thing with a butterscotch sauce for afters, the cream might be flavoured with blood orange and might be frozen, depends on the weather. But it's all designed to be done beforehand, we'll pick her up from the station and indulge in few drinks in the local pub while the lamb takes care of itself in the oven.

lollipop that is the exact opposite meal of technically hipster! Grin

I am prepared to grow a full facial beard, wear tweed with canvas shoes and talk knowledgeably about global street artists if it gets me invited to Sconess's for dinner. Slaver.

Ah thanks Lastlines, not really sure what foods a hipster classically goes for - apart from cereal Wink.....anything homemade is got to be great anyway, lollipop's dishes may appeal because the are so the opposite of trendy food!
What day is she visiting? Week day should feel more casual....posh sausage and mash.....think gastro pub style food. Or a Sunday roast....a taste of home always feels special when you are young free and single.

DS: What's in there?
Me: Kale
DS: Hipster!

lastlines · 18/03/2015 14:48

teehee to cereal. Was just coming on to tell Lollipop no need to slink away. The only place with queues right round the block in Hipster capital Shoreditch the other day was the cereal café. So just plonk some rainbow coloured sugar coated anime shapes in front of her and crack open the wine!

madreloco · 18/03/2015 14:51

Anything not on a plate. Some bread in a flat cap, some homemade soup in a jam jar or something silly, and a salad of just picked dandelion and nettle leaves drizzled in some fancy oil. Hipster central.

onepieceoflollipop · 18/03/2015 14:52

Fish fingers and spaghetti hoops Grin
Aero mousse for pudding

iklboo · 18/03/2015 15:01

Mini Kiev lollipops (Bernard Matthews finest on a cocktail stick)

Kellogg's variety pack served in a teapot

Triple cooked chips served in a hamster ball

ElksCrossing · 18/03/2015 15:20

Ottolenghi-style food is still pretty big in hipsterville - it's tasty and looks cool, casual and thrown-together.

How about something like a lamb, chicken (or for veggies - aubergine & butternut squash) tagine with couscous, served in a nice big serving bowl and scattered with plenty of fresh herbs and pomegranate seeds? I get the little packs of prepared pomegranate seeds - they always make dishes look appetising (and "bejewelled" in Nigella-speak Grin )

Swingball · 18/03/2015 15:55

I'm starving now I've read this! Ok so cheese and crackers in a frisbee it is. I shall have a look at yon Ottolenghi fellow. Thanks.

Ottolenghi's food is the best. It may look thrown together but no recipe has fewer than 17 ingredients at least one of which you'll never have heard of, or have to pop over to Turkey to source.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/03/2015 20:56

I've been growing a beard for a while now, does that get me in Scones?

lastlines · 18/03/2015 21:00

Oi, Jilted - I invited myself first. Hands off that shortbread with rhubarb and butterscotch! My beard will be fashioned from a facial corset covered in iridescent beard-feathers. Almost certain I have seen similar in Spitalfields market.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/03/2015 21:13

Mine be a genuine lady beard and I shall now be borrowing DDs glitter, prit stick and guinea pig for ornamentation.

Flingingmelon · 18/03/2015 21:15

Any thing that isn't an overexcited burger, hot dog, lobster roll, tapas, Korean street food or any other 'street food' will be unusual and exciting for them :)

Have fun Smile

lastlines · 18/03/2015 22:48

Jilted you win. I can't compete against genuine ladybeard with faux naïve craft ornamentation.
