HuevosRancheros · 01/03/2015 18:32

Welcome to the Mumsnet Cookery Book Club :)

Every month we choose two books to cook from - we aim to cook at least two new recipes during the month, reporting back to the group on how we got on.

This month our books are Made in India by Meera Sodha and Prashad by Kaushy Patel

Recipes are also available on line if you don't have access to the books - Meera Sodha's here and Prashad's here

If you would like to see what we cooked last month, the thread is here

Everyone is welcome, don't be shy :)

Huevos- I can help with any chicken keeping qs- I have ten hens. I'd recommend down the lane forum for it too as mn is very quiet in chicken keeping.

P.s chickens too are addictive- I need two to get my required eggs, but I can't stop getting moreShock

Had the Ferrari potatoes with some Kangaroo steaks last night, they're lovely though DH complained about the peanut taste as he had to reheat his in the microwave much later and I don't think the coriander, lemon and peanuts added at the end survived being nuked well. I loved the lemony taste and will make again. We've had the cauliflower, pea and cashew curry again too. The Pantah household consumption of coconut milk has rocketed, please tell me it's better for you than cream. Blush

MiL has chickens, two ducks and a goose that lay well but not all year, they like to rest through late autumn till early spring. Lots of frittatas and omelettes here soon, though DS2 has become addicted to the miso marinated eggs from Just Bento.

Salmon and spinach curry in casa pp tonight. I thought it was delightful, as did dc, mild, flavourful and easy.

Dh thought it was 'too fishy' because he could taste the fish- not like my fish pie, where he can't Hmm I don't know of that's an insult to my fish pie or to this curry tbh.

Made in India has to be one of my most successful cookbook club finds- I love it. I've not made a lot of Indian food in the past, this book has really opened up the genre and inspired me. Thanks to whoever brought it to the cookbook club table Smile

Cantdothisagain · 26/03/2015 20:51

We loved that salmon and spinach curry too. Fragrant and tasty. I actually found it not very fishy! Different tastes I guess....

SconessMcFloness · 27/03/2015 07:51

Grin pregnant which fish pie do you make? I confess to not really being so passionate about the taste of fish either. Blush

pregnantpause · 27/03/2015 18:45

It's from Rachel Allen everyday can't - it's very nice but basic

glorious · 28/03/2015 13:52

We had the tamarind and honey chicken the other night. DH thought it needed to be cooked at a higher temperature to go crispy and sticky like it should. It was fine and very easy but not my favourite as it was a bit unexciting.

couldntbebothered · 29/03/2015 21:41

Someone made the poppadum chaat earlier in the month - where can I get sev from? Have access to tesco extra with world food aisle plus waitrose, lidl, other supermarkets a bit further but doable, no time to get to ethic food store at the moment.

glorious · 29/03/2015 22:33

Me! Of those I'd say Tesco if it's large. Or use bombay mix, they're in that and you could pick the test out (or not ).

glorious · 29/03/2015 22:33

*rest

couldntbebothered · 30/03/2015 07:28

Excellent thanks glorious

lbnblbnb · 30/03/2015 11:55

I found this thread a bit too late to join in - I don't have these books - but I love the idea. Have you decided on an April book(s) yet?

pregnantpause · 30/03/2015 13:19

Lbnb- welcome! April is Diana Henry month, any Diana Henry books ( I have change of appetite and roast figs and sugar snow) or any of her recipes online.

lbnblbnb · 30/03/2015 13:50

Thanks pregnantpause - off to have a look at her books now.

glorious · 30/03/2015 18:52

No problem.

And yes, welcome lbnb. Expect someone will set up a new thread soon. In the meantime I have a few more recipes from MIA down for this week so will post the results here.

HuevosRancheros · 30/03/2015 19:17

Welcome lbnb :)

Today I had the aubergine and tomato curry from MiI
Didn't have any cherry tomatoes in, and frankly wasn't all that keen on the idea, so used tinned plum tomatoes, crushed up a bit.
I'm fairly new to cooking with aubergine, though a keen convert, but I usually fry them, I was a little apprehensive about just sticking them in the sauce raw to simmer.
I needn't have worried - they cooked beautifully and the flavours were superb. A lovely quick lunch that cooks away on its own while you get on with other things :)

I have love love loved MiI! I am the new chapatti queen! Grin

Is there a Diana Henry book that folks would particularly recommend?

lbnblbnb · 31/03/2015 10:40

I have ordered 'A Change of Appetite' because I am on a low-carb diet at the moment and that looked the most likely to be adaptable to this way of eating. I hadn't really heard of her before but having googled her she looks interesting.

ScienceRocks · 31/03/2015 17:26

Is april just Diane henry? I don't have any of her books Sad

Pantah630 · 31/03/2015 18:21

Don't worry science you will have by the end of the month!! Grin [runs for cover]

I think it is Diane Henry plus carry with MiI for those of us still under its spell, including myself here. I bought DH Chicken book on kindle and have cooked one so far so will use that but I'm pretty sure she must have some online recipes. Do we have a new thread yet or shall I go start one?

TwoLittleTerrors · 31/03/2015 20:21

Diana Henry writes for the telegraph so there will beits online.
I'm lurking here while on holiday Smile not cooking anything at the moment. Just eating out lots. Can't wait to get back into my own kitchen.

BrassicaBabe · 31/03/2015 21:14

New April thread please GrinGrin

Pantah630 · 01/04/2015 07:43

new thread here. Have reported it to get my spelling changed, I inadvertently called Diana Diane by mistake Blush

Cantdothisagain · 04/04/2015 20:28

Still on Made in India, had coriander chicken curry again tonight...

Pantah630 · 09/04/2015 09:37

It's still a hit here too. We had pistachio chicken last night but subbed the pistachios for 150g cashews and it was delicious, will take over from my usual cashew chicken recipe, flavour was exsquisite, i dialled down the ground cardomon to 1/4tsp as well.
