OK so you are coming to my house for dinner and you are the only vegetarian. The host is going to serve a lovely roast dinner. You absolutely hate cheese. What would be the nicest dish your host could serve you which would go along with the roast potatoes and vegetables etc. If you have such a lovely dish could you also let me have the recipe.

Flowertop,
You could make some nice roasted veg (few cloves of garlic, olive oil, all rubbed round some peppers, onions, mushrooms etc and bunged in the oven) and then add a tin of toms at the end. It would be a nice baked ratatouille type job that would be lovely with roast pots. Nice and easy too. I presume you're not going to make the potatoes with the meat juices?

edam · 03/10/2006 14:51

Um, I like cheese so am racking my brains... a nut roast of some description? Tbh, I'd be happy with the spuds and veg. Some people like quorn/soya stuff... omelette?

Flowertop · 03/10/2006 14:52

venusinfurs thanks for that sounds great. You're right of course I didn't even think about making the roast pots. any other way. Will have to rethink. Do you think nut cutlets are a bit old now and if you are a vegetarian would these be welcome.

Cauldron foods do some veggie sausages/ nut roasty type stuff you can find in most supermarkets and health food shops (can you tell dh is the cook in this house?).

edam · 03/10/2006 14:54

I'd be happy with nut cutlet if you are doing a roast dinner for everyone else!

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 03/10/2006 14:55

You can jazz up a bought Nut Roast quite easily if you don't want to make one from scratch or don't have the time.

Granose ones (usually from Health Food type shops) have to be mixed up so you can add mushrooms, other veg, herbs, spices etc to taste.

Spidermama · 03/10/2006 14:57

Nut roasts are good. I get the Cauldron ones then add to them a bit (a few chopped or grated veg and a bit more moisture eg wine) to make them more appetising.

Roast veg is also nice but if it's done in the same oven as the meat it'll taste of meat. Yuk! Not that I'd mention it if a friend gave it to me. I'd struggle through it, but I thought you might want to know.

It's very nice of you to canvass opinion on her behalf btw. You're a good friend.

Mercy · 03/10/2006 15:22

Dh doesn't eat meat so when we have a roast I usually buy something from M&S, for example, they do a vegetarian kiev made with brown rice and mushrooms, a few other things like that. Cauldron are good too as others have said.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 15:33

all these options are great, and can i say how very lovely you are for giving a stuff at all? Its nice and very refreshing.

aDAdOnMumsnet · 03/10/2006 15:33

agree with mercy about something ready bought. That way there's also no extra headache for you, if you get something ready made. Most vegetarians I know in that situation would insist that you didn't go to too much extra trouble for them, and would be happy with the veg and potatos, but providing something extra for them is lovely.

winnie · 03/10/2006 15:34

I am a veggie and we have roast meals of the usual; potatoes, veg, yorkshire puddings & gravy with homemade veggie sausages/nutroast/lentil bake/mushroom bake/a pie that can be eaten with gravy (at the moment it would be mushroom)... All of these things are quite time consuming if you are making it for one so you may find an individual portion ready made is the answer. I hope there will be veggie gravy this is often forgotten even in reastaurants

Flowertop · 03/10/2006 15:38

Thanks all for your lovely posts so far. Do you know not only did I not think about potatoes didn't even consider the gravy. Just shows little we know.

Nut burgers/cutlets from Goodlife are good (frozen, orangeand purple box, try Hollandand Barratt or Sainsbury's).
If you're in Holland and Barratt, havea look at their frozen and chilled sections - lots of ideas! Redwood do a Cheatin' Celebration Roast which consists of pretendturkey, pretend bacon wrappedaround veggie sausages andasachet of gravy powder - add fried onions to thegravy for a truly yummy experience...

ProfYaffle · 03/10/2006 16:08

I hate it when people go to too much trouble for me, makes me embaressed but grateful! I would be more than happy with some frozen nut or Quorn roast type thing.

fennel · 03/10/2006 16:09

I like nut roasts, most veggie sausages, and veggie gravy.

I also quite like quiche tho it's very dated. or any veggie tart thing with goats cheese and peppers.

or stuffed peppers, you can roast them in the oven with the other things.

or stuffed mushrooms (you can buy those, i have no idea how to make them).

albatros · 03/10/2006 16:13

I love roast and usually put a Linda Marcartney pie, Quorn grill or such like with it. Bisto gravy powder is vegetarian if you don't want the hastle of making your own

aDAdOnMumsnet · 03/10/2006 16:29

for fennel - nice stuffed mushroom recipe... get those large (portabella?) mushrooms, pop out stalk, put in a mixture of soft cheese and garlic, parsely always nice. top with breadcrumbs. 15 mins in oven. Really nice. Really easy.

fennel · 03/10/2006 16:31

mmm thanks will try, adad...

we like those Linda mcCartney pies too.

though you do have to check that your guest isn't a really serious vegetarian who won't eat "meat substitutes". I know a few of those.

aDAdOnMumsnet · 03/10/2006 16:41

I'm not a big fan of meat substitutes actually - I'm not a veggie but dp is so I guess I have meat once a week or something. But i dont really like fake bacon, quorn etc.

ooh another nice stuffed mushroom recipe... blue cheese, honey and thyme. mmm. Sorry I realise this is not useful for your non-cheese eat guest flowertop!

We are veggie and MIL always gets us something like the M&S vegetables kievs (which are yummy!)

I always think quiche and stuff is not really great with roast dinner tbh

Waitrose have a good selection of things like that too

mothersruin · 03/10/2006 16:51

a veg roast en croute- that is just what i am doing now

OttercumCoypu · 03/10/2006 16:53

yeah a lovely nut roast is always yum or something with a bit of pastry.
NOT roast peppers/risotto

mothersruin · 03/10/2006 17:01

yes dh loves the m&s veg kievs they are fab.

i have grated a courgette with some breadcrumbs, chopped nuts, sunflower seeds,a small tin of chickpeas, a chopped chilli , an onion and a clove of garlic(quickly cooked in a bit of olive oil)and bound with an egg. Press into a loaf tin or similar. Roast for 20 minutes. let it cool. roll ot a square of puff pastry. spread with onion jam or some tomato sauce(not ketchup)Place the roast in the middle and carefully wrp it in the pastry. use a bit of egg or milk to bind the edges and glaze the pastry. place back in the oven until the pastry golden .( about 20-25 mins)

venusinfurs · 03/10/2006 18:16

Mothersrun, what a fab recipe!
here is my veg gravy, for anyone interested:
Fry an onion until soft and slightly brown and sticky then stir in enough flour to make it gloopy, but looser than a proper roux IYKWIM. Then add in stock made from veg stock cube, BIG dollop of Marmite (v important)a dash of tomato puree and if you've got some handy, a slosh of red wine. Whisk it all until it thickens. Will be truly delicious, hopefully.
