I know we seem to have \link{http://mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=4&threadid=218847&stamp=060925221510\millions) of hard working mumsnetters who "all" cook from scratch but does that include making your own bread, ice cream, (fruit) yoghourts, cakes, biscuits, etc

I do all the above but not fruit yoghourts - though am about to start....

In a dream life I would love to be a domestic goddess... sad I know.....

...I'm dreaming of my own lentil loom...
No, seriously, what I really want is a soya milk maker. Imake breadwhen I can't buy decent stuff. Cakesandbiscuits? Yes. I just can'tstand buying the processed stuff.

MamaG · 25/09/2006 22:29

I don't cook everything from scratch, but I don't buy ready meals, and try to keep the processed food to a minimum. I do my own baking apart from bread and make my own sauces etc. Think I'm somewhere between the two.

I'm not organic either

velcrobott · 25/09/2006 22:31

Well I am all organic... I think you would struggle to find anything that is not organic in my cupboards but I've been at it for 20 years so it's second nature.

I make most things from scratch, I buy bread but make the odd loaf every week or two. I don't buy cakes and desserts, we don't generally have them but
I make them if I need them. I don't make yoghurt but
I do make ice cream.
I blend my own curry powder but I use organic vegtable stock cubes, I usually use tinned pulses. I would never dream of using a prepared tomato sauce thing as making your own is sooo much, easier, cheaper and nicer.

I'm not a domestic goddess by any stretch but I did train as a chef in a previous life so I enjoy cooking.

MrsSpoon · 25/09/2006 22:36

I can make most things from scratch but there are some that I don't choose to on a regular basis, pasta, bread, yoghurt, and ice cream being a few that I can think of off the top of my head. All these things are lovely homemade but I don't feel the urge to make them on a regular day-to-day basis.

velcrobott · 25/09/2006 22:44

Pasta - good point... we use to make it from scratch! We have not done so in a while.... It takes so much eggs !!!

MrsSpoon · 25/09/2006 22:46

Sometimes dried pasta is what is needed though, the fresh stuff isn't always right with certain sauces/dishes.

velcrobott · 25/09/2006 22:47

Like? What have you got in mind?

Carmenere · 25/09/2006 22:50

If I do make fresh pasta, which is once in a blue moon, I freeze it and then you can cook it straight from the freezer.

Linnet · 25/09/2006 23:00

I received a pasta maker as a wedding present and had great plans to make my own pasta, I was so excited to get it.

4 years later it's still in it's box, I just don't have the time to make my own pasta, but one day I will, one day!

velcrobott · 25/09/2006 23:01

Carmenere... I shall try that... thanks.. had not thought of freezing it!

Well, to be honest, I don't think there is any need to make EVERYTHING from scratch - there are some really decent convenience things that contain nothing but good wholesome ingredients - think quality organic ice creams, nice fruit tarts from a quality patisserie (even the French don't often make these at home), decent filled pastas etc. If someone makes a point of making EVERYTHING from scratch, you have to wonder what they are trying to prove, and what other areas of their life are lacking!

"quality organic ice creams, nice fruit tarts from a quality patisserie (even the French don't often make these at home), decent filled pastas " - but cheaper if home made!
And the French don't always make healthy food!

Someone on the other thread said

'I make everything form scratch apart from...' and then followed with a huge list which encompassed just about everything.

hunkermunker · 25/09/2006 23:20

Not that I want to bang on about it or anything, but those of you who don't make your own bread...

WideWebWitch · 25/09/2006 23:21

Don't make my own bread (but would if I got around to getting a breadmaker)
Icecream, no but buy organic
yoghurts, no but ditto
cakes, yes, make my own
biscuits, don't buy or make

velcrobott · 25/09/2006 23:21

That's why I asked because many people do not regard bread, ice cream, cakes as convenience foods or possibly unhealthy foods (compared to ready meals and sauces) but all 3 can be incredibly processed and unhealthy and most contain additives unless bought at a local producer.

Hey - just read a book on the crap that's in cosmetics... shall I start a thread???? Not tonight I think

For anyone considering getting a breadmaker, buy a Panasonic one for the love of all things holy

moondog · 25/09/2006 23:22

I'd be interested in the crap in cosmetics one VB!

WideWebWitch · 25/09/2006 23:22

The difference is, I guess, whether the majority of your meals are plain fruit/veg/meat/other ingredients made into a meal or whether you've bought something which a food manufacturer has made in a factory, i.e. a ready meal. In almost all cases in our house it's the former.

velcrobott · 25/09/2006 23:23

Sally look here where we are discussing making bread!
