I know we seem to have \link{http://mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=4&threadid=218847&stamp=060925221510\millions) of hard working mumsnetters who "all" cook from scratch but does that include making your own bread, ice cream, (fruit) yoghourts, cakes, biscuits, etc

I do all the above but not fruit yoghourts - though am about to start....

In a dream life I would love to be a domestic goddess... sad I know.....

But we don't have ice cream, cakes, biscuits around much or as general food, they're occasional things, not staples. Althoguh I do buy organic bread.

Moondog - it is incredibly depressing!!!!
It's all things cosmetics : spas, champoo, hair dye, lipstick and all... I do need my book next to me as the names of the chemicals are eluding me.
The basics.... ban parabens, propylene and ethylene glycols and SLES...

Oh VB yes,and what is more, people happily pay through the nose for it!
What I don't get is why everything has to be bloody perfumed??!
The babysitter I had tonight to go to step has left my house (and my baby!) reeking of some synthetic smell.
Nasty.

The book is fascinating and it does not say 'all natural" is better either. You read French don't you?

Off to bed...

when I read the OP I mis-read "hard working mumsnetters" to "full time working mumsnetters" and could have cried, wondering how they get chance to make everything from scratch and where I go so wrong!

I make a lot of dinners "from scratch" but that does not mean making my own pasta / breads etc. I will make my own sauces. Deffo own biscuits & cakes, just perfer my own, they'll send a good message to my dd that things dont have to look perfect to be nice

I would love to be all domestic goddess like, but when you have only 2 hrs between getting home and getting dd to bed and in that time it's tea, cleaning and playing, it's bags of dried pasta all the way for me!

Besides, even when I have a day when I cook from scratch, it's still nice to sometimes just open the bags of prepared veg, stick em on to cook along with the ready prepared chicken and microwavable mash potato...

I cook a lot of things from scratch and occasionally bake (even bread) but ice cream, yoghurt, pasta (and I'm from an Italian background) no way.

Blandmum · 26/09/2006 17:01

Not everything, no.

Don't do bread, yoghurt, tomato ketchup or pickles (although before I had kids and had more time I used to make chutney and jam), don't do buiscuits of cakes but sometimes make cakes

Holidaymum · 26/09/2006 17:02

Make all our own bread, can't remember the last time I bought a loaf and soon recouped the cost of our panasonic. We don't need to go to the lateshopper for bread any more so avoid coming back with wine or chocolate!

Make all my own sauces, bake, have made yogurt but no one liked it! Only buy good yogurt without fillers or additives.

Basically we don't eat processed food too much sugar and salt before you even get into the other additives.

mousiemousie · 26/09/2006 17:02

Not me. I work full time and don't have much time left after that...it would be lovely to have food cooked from scratch but I am a rubbish cook and simply have higher priorities than this.

TBH would cook more from scratch if not working, but still not everything...life's too short.

hulababy · 26/09/2006 17:05

Not everything here, no. I don't bake - I don't enjoy it. I sometimes use my breadmaker, and did have an ice cream maker but itt got broen during the move.

I do cook though, so I cook most of what we eat and try to avoid as much processed food as possible. But I am also happy to supplement with the odd pizza, fishfingers, etc. And the occasional take away too.

I used organic fruit and veg mostly, but not exclusively. It's delivered each week but I buy extra fruit and veg as and when needed from the local grocers.

I sometimes buy organic fish and meat, but again not always.

MrsSpoon · 26/09/2006 17:24

Vercrobot, according to JO dried pasta is not inferior to homemade just more suited to certain methods of cooking/sauces etc.

TaraPalmerTomkinsonsNose · 26/09/2006 17:25

we rearely haev a takeaway
2 a yesr maybe
they are shite arent they

MrsSpoon · 26/09/2006 17:35

We have (or used to have) a very good indian takeaway near us, they have been taken over and IMO the food is not where near as good and we hardly ever have them now. Good takeaways - yes, bad takeaways - no.

is fish and chips classed as a takeaway?

if not, then we NEVER have takeaways.

I often fantasize about a chinese takeaway but never get around to getting one.

i cook all my evening meals from scrath, as ds is hyper, and the whiff of an e number puts him on the roof!
We now have a company that makes cold packed school lunches, and all of it is home made- the biscuits, muffins, sausage rolls, pasta salads etc etc. so we are having them next week to try, as i dont make sausage rolls, and cook muffins & treats that much !

iota · 26/09/2006 17:57

We tend to have indian or chinese takeaways instead of going out in the evening. The last time we went out (sans kids) was in May

LadyTophamHatt · 26/09/2006 18:55

I know Fio, It's bloody ridiculous.

I always say/think I'm going to have a chinese tonight and it just never happens.

When I stayed at my mums a while ago I had the perfect opportunity to get one but the bloody shop had sacked the chef!! So it was fish and chips again.

I swaer theres a conspiracy against me.
