just wondered what peoples opinions were and if they have ordered one , its only for southeast so not everyone will get it. Its £9.98 for 10 things.

Of course it's only for the south-east, it is a conspiricy to make sure poor people don't live to draw a pension.

portonovo · 22/09/2006 17:55

I personally wouldn't order one simply because I prefer to use box schemes that benefit farmers more than supermarkets, but I understand that several supermarkets are now jumping on this bandwagon.

I can see some people might want to get a box delivered with the rest of their supermarket shopping.

WideWebWitch · 22/09/2006 18:00

I think it's totally missing the point (doesn't mean it won't be successful though!)and that most buy via box schemes because they want to buy locally, not via Tesco.

Holidaymum · 22/09/2006 18:00

Fabulous it shows that proper veg boxes from real farms that benefit the local economy are beginning to damage the supermarkets pockets!

Wouldn't touch them with a bargepole!

However if it highlights the existence of veg boxes even more then great!

SoupDragon · 22/09/2006 18:04

The boxes are by Fenland Organics though.

Freckle · 22/09/2006 18:05

But there's no guarantee that the veg will be produced locally, any more than the organic stuff sold in the stores are. I prefer to use my lovely local organic veggie box man. The stuff is mostly produced within 20 miles of my home and is left on my doorstep with an invoice, trusting that I will pay. Can't see Tesco doing that.

elclose · 22/09/2006 18:32

totally agree i use riverford organic and they are great, Fenland organic is near peterbourgh so hardly local but they do promise that it will be all uk and seasonal produce.

Am boycotting Tesco on all levels now (which irritates me because the do have good mum and baby parking).

But they just delisted a client of mine's products without warning. They're a small manufacturer and customers love their products. But because Tesco made it so hard for customers to find the products in store, they just decided to delist them without warning (this on the same day that they announced they would appoint regional buyers so that they can buy local and support smaller manufacturers. Hypocritical?)

And the day after, they got into that lovely row with the Tyrrell's crips people because despite Tyrrell's refusing to let Tesco stock their products because of their heavy handed tactics, Tesco sourced the crisps on the grey market and undercut the price so that they sold cheaper than anywhere else. Luckily Tyrrell's won that fight and Tesco have agreed to stop selling them.

So I will DEFINITELY not be buying a veg box from them.

far2ezee · 22/09/2006 18:49

being an organic farmer (and an expectant father, thats why I am having a read!) I would ask you to please please please go for a non supermarket
box scheme. I wont bang on with horror stories, but all this hype about Tescos etc supporting the british farming community is rubbish. 'Every little helps'-the shareholders maybe but we are screwed down to the last penny! Buying a box scheme is about buying directly from a producer or an organisation that directly contributes to farmers having a half decent living. It will be fresher, it will generally come from the UK and it wont be putting another nail into the farming communites coffin. Forget the supermarkets with this, buy directly!
www.riverford.co.uk - the largest producer of organics in the country-
www.sunneyfields.co.uk- a little farm down near southampton- I buy from them and they are great, the owner is an organic guru

RanToTheHills · 22/09/2006 18:55

NO, NO, NO! The whole point is to support the farmers, buy as local as possible etc etc. Tyhe complete antithesis of Tesco. The cynical bandwagon-jumping bastards!

fullmoonfiend · 22/09/2006 18:57

I echo RTTH!

brimfull · 22/09/2006 19:00

hey farezzee ,I buy from sunnyfields aswell!
Hopefully people will realise the con that's being played by the supermarkets.

SoupDragon · 22/09/2006 19:05

"The whole point is to support the farmers, buy as local as possible "

No point buying from Riverford then since they appear to be Devon based.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 22/09/2006 19:18

no

i mean, whats the point of veg boxes if you don't support your local farmer etc etc?

otherwise, get to the store and choose what you actually want!

curlew · 22/09/2006 20:20

Is there no trough Tescos don't want its great fat snout in? No no no and no again. There is more to getting an organic veg box than getting organic veg!

Is nothing sacred. we haerd about this in the Riverford newsletter a few weeks ago. It seems Tesco, (and Sainsburys and M&S) can't keep there greedy fingers out of anyone elses pie. The whole point of a veg box scheme is to buy local and support the farms and cooperatives that make their livings from these schemes.

tribpot · 22/09/2006 20:39

Okay, am in Leeds, can anyone recommend a good, local, box scheme for me? Cheers.

JoPG · 22/09/2006 20:39

Ocado are doing this too - 10 items for £14.00

twocatsonthebed · 22/09/2006 20:52

Completely - it's not even about buying local, or even just buying organic. One of the big reasons we have an organic box is because of the way that the big supermarkets (of which Tescos are the worst offenders) completely screw their suppliers - it's the main reason why British farmers are finding it so hard to survive. The less we all buy from the supermarkets, the better. Which is, incidentally, a reason to get Riverford, as they are a co-operative.

And Tribpot - do Farmaround deliver round you? (farmaround.co.uk). If not, try bigbarn.co.uk, which may be able to point you to a local box supplier.

JoshandJamie · 22/09/2006 21:21

every little hurts

JoshandJamie · 22/09/2006 21:22
