After getting a quote for £100 to make a cake for my DD;s 5th birthday, I am going to have a go myself eeek !
I am pretty good a knocking up a sponge cake, but icing is all black magic to me. I am going to try and make something like the attached (not very big). I am thinking of making the turrets out of plastic tube and icing and letting them dry then removing the tube with an ice cream cone on the top covered in sugar strands ? Does that sound doable ? If I use the ready roll icing will that dry ok ? What would be the best way to stick the sugar strand to the ice cream cone ?. Your advise would be appreciated Confused

what about covering (shop-bought!) swiss rolls for the turrets, cover with pink fondant icing? I'd dip the cones in glace icing. Have you googled recipes for princess cakes? Am sure there are loads!

My local library has a good selection of cake decorating books with step-by-step details.

I'm a very amateur cake maker but if you're attempting something like the one here, it looks like a square cake topped with a round cake. You may need dowels to support the upper tier.
The towers you could make from kitchen roll tubes, and slot an ice cream cone in to give an 'overhand' for the tower roofs (and then invert another cone to make the turret.
Sugar paste icing will do the bulk of it.
If you use 'normal' icing (icing sugar/water) for the cones they will easily hold sugar strands on.

There are a number of tutorials online too.

Good luck! Will you post a photo of the finished article?

Osmiornica thanks for the tips, I bought some Sugarcel today form a lovely little cake supplies shop I stumbled across. Lady was amazingly helpful. I am going to make hollow tubes for the turrets, that can be binned. I am going to start them this weekend and start baking the cakes which I will then freeze until need week.

I remember making one of these for my DD when she was little. IIRC I just used swiss rolls for the towers and ice cream cones for the turrets and lots of fondant icing... She loved it even though it didn't look quite as good as the pic!

Dip the cones in white chocolate inside and out, rather than icing, and then when dry, brush with that edible luster dust you can buy. Very easy to do, will look great and taste amazing (the cones stay really crispy and crunchy).

Wow gastro that sounds amazing, I have some Lustre (also purchased from lovely little shop)

Here's how the cones look when finished (by an amateur like me!)

I made a princess castle cake last year for DD. Here's the thread I had about it and it turned out very well.

I used maderia cake in the end as it seemed a bit more solid to work with.

MyCatLovesMeSometimes · 14/09/2014 13:25

I spray painted the ice cream comes with edible gold colour and they did look good.

Thanks all, love your cake gastro the dragon is amazing !. I have bought cheapo wafer cones, will they go soggy. Should a get nice waffle cone like you all have ?. The cakes are all baked and in the freezer, ready for assembly Friday night (could be a late one).

Well I was up until midnight but I did it. Really chuffed. A few frustrations on the way and it nearly went in the bin a couple of times but her little face this morning made up for it.
