Gin!

I used to think I didn't like gin. And then I had something that wasn't a Gordons and Schweppes. It was a fucking revelation. What are your favourites? What mixers do you use? And how does madam prefer her martini?

Hello, this thread is a little old now. Take a look at this handy page for a round up of Mumsnetters' favourite gins.

There so needs to be a "Gin" topic on MN.

I'm in.

Bombay and Fever Tree for me. Bombay, I know I know, but I've tried many many many and I always return.

gobbynorthernbird · 09/08/2014 22:11

Y'see, as an amateur (rather than the full blown pisshead aficionado I am now) , I rather liked Bombay. Now I find it rather artificial. Do you know what you like about it, Norm? Is there a particular taste that you love?

i made Gin Lime truffles today....well nearly...it has to chill overnight.

Warm chocolate and gin is the MOST amazing smell!

I like Bombay and Tanqueray, but am hoping to get involved in a new local venture distilling their own! :D

BolshierAyraStark · 09/08/2014 22:15

Bombay is my 'cheap' when I've had a few gin now Blush

I do Zeyphr, Millers, Ophir & Portobello road amongst others...

I will post a pic of the collection tomorrow when I'm on laptop-fookin iPhone won't let me, boo!

NormHonal · 09/08/2014 22:16

Well, Martin Millers won a taste test so I bought some of that and wasn't impressed - to me it didn't taste of anything. I seem to like my gin to taste a bit rough.

BolshierAyraStark · 09/08/2014 22:17

Errr, can I give you my address cats?-just in case you have any spare...

gobbynorthernbird · 09/08/2014 22:17

Tanq is wonderful.
Pray tell about the local stuff, Cats.

Never met a gin I didn't like but if I am fussy I like Plymouth or Portobello Rd the best. Currently at home I have Hendricks, Bloom and a Tanq 10.

I went to the Adnams brewery today and tried the two gins (was not at the distillery tour though damn) Very strong but nice.

Fave tonic is fevertree but happy with a fentimans. Actually happy with anything really as I just love it so much I'd be over the moon to just be having one at all. LOVE AFFAIR.

gobbynorthernbird · 09/08/2014 22:40

Good show, Bolshier. What do you think of the Heston stuff? I thought it was good when someone else bought it, but don't think I'd buy it myself. The flavours were a bit too overpowering.

Juan I learned today that Adnams do an absynthe. Really looking forward to trying that.

I think it's a bit cloying tbh-ok for one of a summer evening but ditch it after that.

Catsmamma · 09/08/2014 22:43

gobby ...Eden Brewery in St Andrews are branching out from the fancy beers and installing stills, dh belongs to the Beer Club, we are off to have a wee tour at the beginning of September, and there is talk of a tasting evening.

They are still doing beers and it's a great afternoon to do a beer tasting, but think how much more fun gin will be!! :o very overexcited

gobbynorthernbird · 09/08/2014 22:49

Cats, you know you have to take one for the team and do a proper taste test? If it takes you more than a bottle, we understand.

Tanq export in a dry martini.

gobbynorthernbird · 09/08/2014 22:55

How dry? Churchill? I prefer a perfect, but you never get olives in them and a snack/drink combo is always a winner.

OP posts:
Catsmamma · 09/08/2014 22:59

i like a dirty martini! Nice slick of olive squoosh over the top.

And I'll do my best to get involved in the tasting!

grocklebox · 09/08/2014 23:05

Dry but dirty, 3 olives.

No to Churchill, the nearest he got to vermouth was to bow in the direction of France! About a 4:1 is best for me, tiny slick of brine. Ice cold though!

grocklebox · 09/08/2014 23:09

meant 5:1. Fat fingers.I like a gibson too. Did you know its bad luck to have an equal number of garnishes?Has to be one or three olives or onions!

gobbynorthernbird · 09/08/2014 23:21

Grockle and there was me thinking you were hardcore. I prefer a little more vermouth. Noilly is nice, but I'm not a massive vermouth snob so happy with Martini.

I didn't know that about bad luck/garnishes, but I always think an odd number looks better.

I find Mare is lovely in a dirty martini. The rosemary and thyme flavours go really well with olives.

I just love a well made g&t. Fever tree is good, with a grapefruit twist.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 10/08/2014 01:21

(Whispers) I'm not that big a fan of a Martini.

My fave thing with gin is gin, elderflower cordial, soda or gongwer beer, with frozen raspberries as ice.

grocklebox · 10/08/2014 01:49

to be fair, I'll take it anyway you care to make it, as long as you use good gin. I'm SO not picky.

Waitrose currently have a few gins on special offer. I got Millers and Mare. I use waitrose essential little cans of tonic.

Any time you go to Mallorca or Menorca, you must get Xoriguer at the airport on the way back. Is very good with Limonata or tonic and only 12 euro a litre.

foolishpeach · 10/08/2014 10:53

Marking my place. I am pg at the moment so can't try any recommendations for ages and ages.

I really like Sipsmith in a very dry martini, but also love G&T with Fever Tree Light.
