Just had a converstion with dds on "how did you learn to cook Mummy". So ended up telling them about learning from my parents and my scary cookery teacher at school. My first "dish" was sausage plait! So the dds want to make this next w/e. But I can't remember any more? What were your first dishes?

the first one was 'melting moment' biscuits.

Medulla · 10/09/2006 17:53

I remember coming home and telling my mum I needed to take ingrediants for vegetable lasagne - urrgghh! What a waste of food she said, none of us will eat that - it's still a family favourite now!!!

Gem13 · 10/09/2006 17:55

my ds(12) has cookery tomorrow. he is a very fussy eater but i love his teacher because she just stuffs food in his mouth.

treacletart · 10/09/2006 18:04

stared with scones and mushroom soup, went on to spaghetti bolganaise, then sausage rolls and quiches with fillings made with bechamel sauce and eggs - reckon once youve mastered a white sauce and pastry you really believe you can cook

littlerach · 10/09/2006 18:04

we rarely cooked anything, more theory I htink.

But remember cooking jam tarts in Primary.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 10/09/2006 18:05

pizza
spag bol
pasta bake
cakes

5 years of the above - what a great teacher I had!

littlerach · 10/09/2006 18:11

I only did it for half a year, I think.

our Home Ec teacher was useless.

one day we were supposed to be making blancmange and were told to bring the packet of blancmange, a pint of milk and a bowl to bring it all home in. I forgot the milk. The teacher told me to do it with water instead. We'd make our thing then go off to our afternoon lessons then run back to the Home Ec class before hometime to pick up our "cooking".

Everyone else had bowls of firm pink blancmange and i had pink water. And because i didn't know what else to do i carefully carried it (sloshing)home in a carrier bag - a 3 mile bus journey and 15 minute walk. "stupid woman" my mum said.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 10/09/2006 18:14

i did food tech compulsery in year 7-9 (i usually did 2 terms per year, but others usually did 1) and then i took it as my gcse so another 2yrs.

ilovecaboose · 10/09/2006 18:15

I don't remember cooking at primary school though I gues we probably did.

At secondary school I didn't take food tech GCSE so only did it for 3 years and we only cooked one thing a year - the rest was theory.

1st year - cheese and oat burgers (god knows why they were disgusting - though mine were probably made worse by the fact I had to use ready brek and not oats )

2nd year - pizza with shop bought bases and sauce (i'd been making these and home since I was about 6)

3rd year - a salad (no cooking at all)

I'm glad my parents taught me to cook!

Furball · 10/09/2006 18:19

Upsidedown pineapple cake

Our very first cookery lesson we made sandwiches and fresh lemonade

Pyramid · 10/09/2006 18:26

Upside Down Cake, scones, Cornish Pasties. All crap because I never could bake.

Chicken coq au vin, Steak & kid, pork and mushroom; various other casseroles. All yummy and still major comfort food for me.

lorina · 10/09/2006 18:29

I vividly remember making vegetable soup , one ingredient of which was a pint of milk. Cant remember what else went into it but the finished effect was bright yellow. Had to be taken home in a thermos flask. To be poured down the sink if I remember correctly

Blandmum · 10/09/2006 18:31

Fist thing we made was scrabled egg on toast and a cup of tea.
Coconut pyramids
Cheese straws
Scones
Plate jam tart
victoria sponge
Gingerbread
Eggless sponge for a swiss roll
Bread (v useful one of the few things that I still make)
Chelsea buns
A plated salad
Fresh fruit salad
A beef casserole
Rice pudding
A christmas log
Christmas cake

Blandmum · 10/09/2006 18:31

oh and puinapple upside down cake
Steamed sponge pudding

motherinferior · 10/09/2006 18:36

Absolutely bugger-all. I made a cake, once, when I was 10 and it sank and everyone laughed at me. I ignored any attempt to learn cookery after that and got on with the academic stuff.

I'm now an excellent cook and make rather lovely cakes.

Northerner · 10/09/2006 18:39

God I was crap at Home Economics, I remember making Victoria Sponge, Waldorf Salad, Ginger biscuits, Cesear Salad and a yule log at Christmas.

trinityshiftingherleatheryarse · 10/09/2006 18:54

the only thing i can remember was wholewheat macaroni cheese, which got me and A and it's dh's fave lol

Blandmum · 10/09/2006 18:56

I loved Home Economics (no Food tech in my day )

I remember going through all the different methods of cake making, Rubbin in , Creaming, eggless, and boiling.

If you could do that lot, you could cook just about anything

Did it for two years but stopped before O level

I made very similar things to you Martian!

Cooked breakfast
Victoria sponge
White sauce
Pastry
Crumble
Liver & Bacon
Yule log
Egg and bacon pie (aka quiche Lorraine!)
Rock cakes

Probably loads more that I can't remember. Also it was compulsory until the 3rd year.

Blandmum · 10/09/2006 19:23

also did rock cakes and a proper Roux sauce....how could I forget that, I made one only today!
