What did you cook at school?

Just had a converstion with dds on "how did you learn to cook Mummy". So ended up telling them about learning from my parents and my scary cookery teacher at school. My first "dish" was sausage plait! So the dds want to make this next w/e. But I can't remember any more? What were your first dishes?

I lived abroad as a kid and so my first experience of English primary school cookery was aged 10 - jam and lemon curd tarts. I didn't have a clue what lemon curd was!
(My strongest memory of that day though was that I didn't know how to spell my surname in English, I remember having to look on the back of my school tie where my name tape was to copy it out, and another pupil catching me doing it! )

How could I forget that!

I must say the school did a good job with the cookery lessons. The only probelms was running for the bud with a wicker basket of red hot food at the end of the day (ourlessons were last two lessons on a Friday). The plate jam tart was particularly traumatic I remember!

Well, I certainly can't top martianbishop's culinary wizardry.

I remember making some orange-coloured liver dish and having to sit with it in the French class while the teacher peered at it and said 'qu'est-ce que c'est??'

And hawaian toast. Bread, ham, pineapple ring, cheese.

lol toadstool - sounds vile!

My mum told me that ny brother made cottage pie at school one day and brough it home for them to eat for dinner. But apparently he misread the instructions and added one tablespoon of salt to the boiling potatoes rather than one teaspoon. Large glasses of water all round!

EEEK - even one teaspoon seems excessive these days

Chocolate Dougal:
shop-bought swiss roll, covered in chocolate icing and decorated with sweets. It was supposed to look like Dougal from the Magic Roundabout.

I've still good my school cookery book "The art of cooking" sponsered by Stork margarine.
Some of the pages are stuck together with the remnants of Apple crumble, Victoria Sponge (Mine didn't rise!) and Pineapple Upside down Cake.
I still use it for cakea and puddings. It has a brillant receipe for Fairy Cakes. The only one I know which doesn't end up with pointy tops like volcanoes!

I learned how to cook spag bol aged 8/9, and it was my job to cook it once a week for tea before my mum came home from work!
Loved cooking and was so devasted 3 years later at secondary school when domestic science consisted of a term of learning how to boil an egg and make pastry - I'd been doing that kind of stuff for years

1st yr secondary school

wk 1 coleslaw
wk 2 apple crumble - the boy I was sharing the 'kitchen' with managed to rest his hot pan on the washing up bowl and melt it, then stick the pan to the pan stand - the apple got melted plastic in and stunk the home ec classroom out.

I enjoyed home ec though, and went on to do GCSE, use the fatless sponge recipe still.

Did "food and nutrition" for one year when I was 11. Consisted of learning about the food groups (and how to tell if you were eating enough fibre- think Gillian McKeith!) and maybe a few halfhearted 40 minute periods in the domestic science block.
Did chicken liver pate, chocolate cornflake cakes and feta cheese salad (with beetroot - made the whole thing turn pink)
and that's it.
My culinary repertoire now is not much better!

First thing we made in school was beans on toast and a cup of tea. Stood me in good stead for student life later on!!!!!!

I did O-level Home Economics (showing my age) and I went on to do A-level too. We did mega big meal planning things with loads of courses. It was a nightmare taking everything home.

I always remember for the A-level exam I did a pudding called Apple Charlotte Ruse. I only chose it coz i loved the name so much. When I had DD all those years later I named her Charlotte Ruth. When people say she has a pretty name, she says 'yes, I'm named after a pudding'.

Crumble, coleslaw, cheese and potato pie, victoria sponge, swiss roll, and gingersomething (mine looked as though a football had landed in it). Think it was something to do with methods - beating, whisking, combining, etc.

I also did many of the lovely items listed below when I took Home Economics, BUT I always ended up with the bloody setting of 'You have to prepare a meal for a teenage girl, this must be high in iron' etc etc etc, so I always ended up cooking liver. My dd is doing food tech this week and is making a roux sauce, we have been practising because she hates to show herself up in lessons. Tuesday night she made macaroni cheese for her and her sister, it was very nice. Last year she made scones, scone based pizzas, soup, fruit salad, but the emphasis is on the design side the things now rather than the actual food preparation.

Home Ec in my day too. We did pretty much the same as MB, including Christmas Pudding and cake made in September to mature til Christmas. It was the only O level I got an A in.

DS1 & 2 have done Food Technology in secondary and it's rubbish. They've made a sandwich, fruit salad, pizza (bought base, just the topping) and flapjacks.
